So I recently watched the Super Giant film Rifftrax did and I'm just going to say it out right

Prince of Space is the best Pre Ultraman Japanese superhero.

And a lot of that comes down to Krankor yes but Prince himself does some heavy lifting. He's got a lot of natural charisma and humanity that bleeds through even in the dub that his contemporaries, Space Chief and Super Giant, do not have.

but also Krankor.

I’m in the UK I’ve worked out that gizmo plex would cost about £85 for 12 months which is pretty reasonable for a streaming service, do we know what other content is going to be made available on there????

Yeah, I'm not 100% clear on that myself.

I mean I know it's where we can stream the new episodes while a subscription is active, but will we have access to the past catalog to stream?
I also know we'll be able to access any live content that pops up while we have an active sub.
I also know that any content we outright purchase we can stream and download without an active sub.

A few things I hope to see:
I'd love for there to be a monthly live event(s) of re-watches of past classic episodes like they did on YouTube. Those were more fun than I expected.
A shared store space and purchase archive with RiffTrax would be nice.

I think this season in particular is just to get things started. I don't expect anything more than the 13 episodes and 12 shorts and a couple live events that will entail I have no idea what.

We're getting a 3D movie episode though so that's neat.

I believe they've said they want to have a rotating group of older episodes that will be available to members.

For those wondering about specifically what will be included in the Gizmoplex, here’s an excerpt from an old Kickstarter update with a breakdown of what is supposed to be open to everyone, and what is included with a Gizmoplex Pass (the subscription).

quote:

Q: So, will we need a Gizmoplex Pass to use all of that?

No! Just like your local cineplex, the Gizmoplex will be open to everyone... but there will be a lot of membership benefits that come with an active Gizmoplex Pass.

As of now, the Gizmoplex will give all visitors access to...

  • A PERSONAL VIDEO LIBRARY of episodes you rent or own.
  • A PRIVATE THEATER to watch your episodes + host watch parties.
  • The VIDEO COUNTER, to rent or purchase more episodes.
  • The LOBBY, where you'll be able to view the "wall of backers."
  • The TICKET BOOTH, where you can buy tickets for live events.

All of those features will be available to everyone... so if you don't want to pay for an ongoing membership, you don't have to. You're free to buy and rent only what you want to watch!

Q: Then why do we need a Gizmoplex Pass?

Good question! If you just want a place to watch, rent and buy episodes of MST3K, you don't need a Gizmoplex Pass. But honestly, we think you're going to end up wanting one, because it'll add all kinds of additional benefits to your experience, including...

  • FULL ACCESS to all live events and special programming
  • The MEMBER'S LIBRARY: a curated, monthly lineup of classic episodes
  • The MEMBER'S LOUNGE: a space for real-time social interaction
  • MEMBER CONTESTS to win MST3K gifts and downloads
  • MEMBER DISCOUNTS on event-specific merchandise
  • More fun perks that we're still working on!

If you have a Gizmoplex Pass, you'll also have guaranteed admission to attend the live premiere screening – with Joel, our cast and special guests – for each new episode released while your pass is active. (We're expecting to release one new episode each month, so if we get 12 new episodes, you'll be all set with tickets to all 12 live premieres!)

This was all from when they were in the early planning stages, so I would bet good money that some of these things (especially the social stuff) will not actually be there for the initial launch, but I think that’s the most specific breakdown they’ve given of what it will have, and what requires the subscription.

I’m not sure about gifting it, but if you do want to buy a Gizmoplex Pass for March 4, you need to do it in the next few days. They’re treating the first few months as a sort of early access preview or beta. If you didn’t back the Kickstarter at a level that gets you a pass, you only have until February 18 to buy one, or else you need to wait until May to get in.

They’re selling them at https://makemoremst3k.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders

You can watch your movies without the subscription. Exclusive access to the live events might be worth something, but my sense is that they’re thinking yearly subscribers are following the Patreon model (I am paying to support the artists) more than they are the streaming service model.

Based on the Kickstarters, they probably aren’t wrong. Also based on the Kickstarters, they’d do well to set up a revenue stream that doesn’t send a sizable percentage of money to Kickstarter, though it remains to be seen if the Gizmoplex will do the trick.

Bringing up Pod People reminds me of what I didn’t particularly like about season 12, where it was kind of forced to be a plot device in the host segments.

My biggest issue with the new episodes in general has been how they focused on old callbacks and tried to use them to carry new material. It’s one thing for a live show to be part of the “Watch Out for Snakes Tour”, but season 12’s focus on an Idiot Control Now (or whatever) felt cringe for me, while a friend who hadn’t seen Pod People in something like 25 years had no idea what was going on and why it was supposed to be funny.

Anyways that’s just my opinion and I still liked the episodes overall — the riffing segments were still top notch — it just felt like the “story” in the host segments were trying too hard. Will be curious to see how season 13 pans out.

I can't help but wonder if that was something that Netflix tried to compel, what with the whole "six episodes for people to binge in a row" thing.

I heard an interview with Jonah a while back where he confirmed that the tweaked format and gauntlet idea were a result of Netflix wanting to make the show more bingeable. Interestingly, he also noted that it apparently worked! At least according to Netflix’s private metrics.

But I think that ultimately Joel and co. don’t really want it to be a binge-watch show. The fact that they’re planning to release episodes monthly this season supports that even more. Netflix is so tied to binge-watching that it really wasn’t a great fit in hindsight.

I don’t know if that particular storyline was also a result of Netflix’s suggestions, but I do agree that it’s my least favorite thing about that season.

Kind of the whole point of MST3K is that, with episodes being ~90m, you really only settle in for one at a time, and you're going to be getting one out of a grab bag. Bingeing makes no sense any more than it makes sense to binge all the movies in the "Edgy 90s Drama" scrolling row
