An actual sequel to SMRPG would be the dream. Despite all the Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi games this one holds up extremely well for being over 25 years old.

The interview is quite fascinating. Can’t imagine how the game would’ve been if Mario used a sword and magic like an actual Final Fantasy game.

My favorite minor saga in No Man's Sky was how the lead dev guy tried to pretend multiplayer was in the game even after release. Early on in development they had mentioned there would be minor multiplayer where you could run into other players in the same area as you. At some point they must have dropped that but instead of actually admitting "Oh yeah, we had to cut that" the lead dev instead kept saying it was in, but played up the "space is SO BIG you might NEVER see another player, I mean what are the odds you'll be in the same place at the same time?"

Then the game came out and two players instantly managed to get to the same spot on the same planet, and were trying to figure out why they couldn't see each other like the dev said. And he still didn't come clean!! He made vague tweets about how the multiplayer servers were so overwhelmed right now, implying that that was why it wasn't working. It wasn't until people packet sniffed the game and proved it couldn't possibly be capable of multiplayer that the arguments finally stopped.

It ended up being a pretty minor footnote in the history of the game but I remember laughing at it a lot.

This and the OG trailers with the giant dinosaurs that never existed in the game is pretty much why i don't trust how clean the NMS footage looked in that Nintendo Direct.

Some ubisoft bullshotting going on there.

Actually I would just like them to put SMRPG on the SNES service. I think that's the last Nintendo published game for the SNES they haven't put on there yet outside of Japanese exclusive titles

It's definitely a game that you have to make your own goals for if you don't want to do the main quest, that's for sure. I still have my goal of making a underwater base.

I like No Man’s Sky enough to dip in every once in a while, and my game is set to “creative” mode or whatever that basically takes away the small shell of a gameplay loop it has.

No idea how bad it will look and perform on Switch given it barely runs on a base Xbox One/PS4.

The best Mario RPG is Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and that is not due to the presence of Mario or even Luigi.

what they need to make is obviously Super Mario RPG 2: Wario RPG.

Seriously though how does actually play? What's the gameplay loop?

Is it a Ubisoft checklist of markers on a map, or you actually sort of bumbling around a proc-gen universe? What's the point?

You start off on some planet with very little life support left and no memory, and poison air. Your computer gives you instructions on how to repair your life support which involves collecting some resources. Once you get that stabilized you'll soon find a gun that can mine stuff to gain mineral resources. You'll soon find a ship and look for the things you need to repair it. There's a beacon that seems to have been left by a partner and you are looking for that partner. And a message in the ship you can't understand. As you get off the planet you can better track the signal and try to find it what's going on. You will soon learn how to travel to other planets, how to engage hyperdrive to go to other stars. You will soon learn how to build a shelter and a base you can quick travel to from a Stargate type thing. You will find a giant space station that has merchants and diplomats. You can slowly learn alien languages by talking to people in these. You can get recipes for upgrading your ship and your gear and for new base building structures.

After following the main "quest" for a while you will find the online hub zone where you can interact with other players for the first time and multiplayer possibilities open up from there.

I played it recently on PC, and the entire gameplay loop was just firing the mining gun at different shaped rocks on slightly different planets. Try and collect enough fuel resource to make it to the next system, so you can try and collect enough fuel resource there. It seemed astoundingly boring.

How long are we gonna use covid as an excuse? There's a billion other much more plausible reasons BotW2 and Prime 4 aren't out yet all to do with big games taking a lot of time to develop and Nintendo are generally better at letting them take as long as they need. Sure covid would have hindered development but it's not like in a world where people didn't gently caress bats we'd have them both out by now
