I saw spoon play a set at the Amoeba Records in SF in like 2004 but I have almost zero recollection of it. I wasn’t even high or drunk or anything. But they are a really solid, dependable band and I have tix to see them in April. Hopefully I’ll remember it this time because I have a suspicion they’re going to call it quits soon.

What made them not so good live? Just boring? Don't sound as good?

Yeah it wasn't even like low energy. Just more boring, everything just kind of blended together. They were festival sets so maybe that had something to do with it? But they definitely didn't strike home as a band I'd be racing out to see again.

The Walrus posted:spoon are weird cause I like all of their albums basically but I saw them live like 15 years ago and every song sounded basically identical to one another. maybe it was just the setlist but drat what a boring show. I think they must do a lot in production that they just don't carry over to their live shows and it ends up just being staccato guitar strumming at a quarter beat for an hour

There are some songs here and there I can tolerate, but their sound changed way too much and moved away from the more minimalist style I really enjoyed. I liked A Series of Sneaks too, but they released Gimme Fiction and I was kinda like uhhh what the gently caress is this and I haven’t heard anything they’ve done since that even remotely interested me. I was actually just listening to Hot Thoughts the other day and I enjoyed one song, hated the rest of the album, then hated that song too after another listen lol

To be clear, I do love Spoon. Small Stakes, The Way We Get By, Paper Tiger, Jonathan Fisk, All the Pretty Girls Go To the City, Junes Foreign Spell, Metal School, Quincy Punk Episode, Advance Cassette defined an era of my life. Still in my rotation 20 years later. Gimme Fiction felt like they really wanted to get on the radio and it worked and good for them and their success. I like a really specific part of their discography

loving girls can tell rules too. Everything Hits at Once is amazing as hell and so is anything you want. Three albums is a good run Edit: started listening to Girls Can Tell just cause of this. Such a drat good album Edit 2: skipped to the end for Chicago at Night, gently caress I forgot about this. For my tastes they've never had a bad album but Kill the Moonlight is the best and it ain't even close. The new one is fine. Nothing much to get excited about, but none of it sucks.

I can do you one better as far as honest bad takes go, Hot Thoughts is second only to Transference as far as Spoon goes. "Coconut milk, coconut water Aw ha, you still like to tell me they're the same Aw ha, and who am I to say?" I unapologetically love it.

Spoon was good but unremarkable the first time I saw them live and then the second time I saw them live they were incredible. They experimented a lot more on the tour for hot thots so if they had felt one note previously that would have been the one to see them on Anyway I haven’t listened to the new album yet but satellite is as great as I hoped it would be

All told I think chapter 3 was my least favorite, by a hair. Looking forward to another listen of this one. The final track definitely did not disappoint. I've been lax in pre-ordering that vinyl, I better go do that before I forget. Kind of wish I got the gold edition, but I guess I really don't have that kind of money anyway.

February has had an embarassment of riches in terms of good indie/folk-ish music. The new Beach House, Spoon, Black Country New Road, Mitski, and Animal Collective albums are all quite good. Still looking forward to that Spiritualized album this Friday, and then I can coast for a few months just on February's releases.
