From a quick joojle

Red-Dyed diesel – Most dyed diesel sold in the U.S. is red in color – dyed with the chemical additive Solvent Red 26 or 164. ... Red-dyed gas may only be used in off-road vehicles and applications, including farm tractors, heavy construction equipment, and generators.

Diesel is dyed for off-road stuff because road taxes are worked into fuel taxes.

Heavy equipment and farm machinery and such doesn’t use roads, so use dyed diesel which isn’t taxed the same.

Using dyed diesel in a road vehicle is tax evasion which is no bueno.

I was used to seeing diesel that looks pink like this (not mine)

And then there's ATF which is what I imagined red diesel would look like:

Nope, turns out I was seeing red diesel all along. That means every diesel vehicle that doesn't meet tier 4 diesel engine standards is illegally using red diesel at SFO airport. :ohdear: I know for sure that everyone got their diesel from the same place and it was all red diesel. All those road-legal catering company trucks and company pickups were taking the same diesel that was put in what I assume are tier 4 exempt industrial vehicles like the airplane pusback tugs.

Sometimes workers would mix in jet fuel if they couldn't get any diesel. I never understand that mentality, why does the job have to get done? Your company isn't putting gas in their vehicles. Not your problem, take a break.

Airports are not considered roads, you know. That's a place I would expect to see untaxed diesel, because it's not going on the public roads.

If those little food and supply trucks never leave the airport, it doesn't matter.

I remember many years ago seeing a tv show - that I think was British - where they were roadside testing trucks (lorries) to see if they were using red diesel illegally. I tried searching for it and came across this article from 2015 instead, which says the red dye can be defeated so they’re adding a chemical marker to red diesel and have mobile detection units.

"New diesel additive posted:

102 pence/litre for diesel, 38 pence/litre for red diesel… UK government estimates that the cost to the taxpayer is over £80 million per year in lost tax revenues…

Many different methods have been developed to evade detection. One of the most common is to remove the red coloration from the diesel. In the UK, a diazo dye — Solvent Red 19, 24 or 26 — is used to colour the diesel. Fraudsters can remove the colour using an acid or alkali which renders the dye colourless, or by stripping the dye from the diesel using activated carbon.

But the UK government is fighting back and has recently authorised a new roadside test aimed at combatting fuel fraud — and chromatography is the key.
Developed by the chemical company Dow, a chemical — ((3-(sec-butyl)-4-(decyloxy)phenyl)methanetriyl) tribenzene — is added to the diesel as a marker. Once it has been added to the fuel, it is difficult to remove — giving HMRC a better chance of identifying any fraud. The marker is easily detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry — but laboratory testing means delays in combatting the fraud.
But in Northern Ireland, the government has fitted fuel fraud detection units — using portable GC-MS — into 49 vehicles that can be used by HMRC enforcement officers to detect illicit fuel quickly and easily at the roadside.

I can’t find much mention of it more recently but Dow has a reprinted article that mentions it, under the name Accutrace. The article also mentions another detection method that can find trace amounts of dyes after the criminals have removed it “The technology features a custom-built surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectrometer in association with a patented silver colloid that enhances detection sensitivity.”
