You want your first camp ASAP. They prevent meat usage for any armies in their range and have access to all the best buildings. The Ivory Road province is a long noodle province and you will run out of meat travelling up and down it without a camp to park at.

Is there a marker for how far the range is on those camps? There doesnt seem to be any demarcation of the range on the map.

tbf, the prince battles are basically glorified siege battles

I'll say I do enjoy the chaos realms for all the open field battles, though.

I mean, yeah, this is pretty much the only way to actually win street fights with them. It's still a lot slower than other factions whose infantry does damage and who have the mobility to reliably hit from multiple angles.

I'm not saying Cathay can't win settlement battles, I'm just saying that it's a shame that they're way slower at doing so than every other faction(except Nurgle, lol) in a way that adds up to a whole lot of time across a campaign. I wouldn't have an issue with it if you got to fight more field battles(where Cathay's hold em and shoot em gameplay shines) but CA has once again managed to give us Total War: Siege Battles.

At least in Hard/Hard I've experienced Cathay having pretty good auto resolve going for them (and I think I saw it mentioned it's not as bad as some others on VH), and your replenishment is alright as well, so you actually should be able to a sustain auto resolve casualties fairly well if you go with that.

I'm having a lot of fun with Kislev myself. Armoured Kossars have pretty good guns but I've mostly been using them as footslogging melee infantry while I use Winged Lancers and Gryphon Legion to own any nerds that the boys can't handle. Also really enjoy Streltsi and Ice Guard.

I honestly didn't think I'd like Kislev because armour piercing ranged units are the video game equivalent of Ambien for me. But after my extremely stupid rear end was introduced to the 'melee mode' button that has existed for more than a decade (thanks again poster who told me about that!) I'm all for it. Katarin's a good character - though Kostaltyn seems cooler in cutscenes, where he's a calm religious guy, as opposed to the screaming maniac that he is in the actual game.

Plus I find it really fun trying to hold Kislev together. The Norscans keep pouring through the border and getting owned, while the Daemon Prince keeps crossing the ocean to kick my rear end. Plus Skrag in the south and Skaven in Hellpit. Lot's of varied enemies to fight.

I like the idea of the bastion as a vehicle to produce massive siege battles with 2+ armies per side on an interesting map, but the enemy side of the equation feels kinda placeholdery.

Firstly, the small precursor stacks become irrelevant after the early game and my Miao campaign fell into a loop where they would spawn every few turns and get autoresolved by one halfway decent army, keeping the threat meter permanently low and turning the whole thing into busywork like sweeping leaves off your porch. It would be better to just have a few massive attacks come in over the course of a campaign.

Secondly, when you have the rogue armies mechanic enabling weird and varied army comps since game two, why would you make it so that you only get attacked by extremely samey Norscan armies with like five different units? It's a perfect opportunity to give Cathay fights against all sorts of demons, hell all sort of factions even. Throw a lost and maddened lizardman stack in there. You could throw all kinds of bullshit at the wall if you gave the player some advance intel of what's coming and a chance to customize the defending armies. Instead it's mammoths and marauders and basic trolls forever. It feels like a huge amount of wasted potential. Oh well, no doubt it will get a second look at some point.

I had fun with the Nurgle army fight, the Katarin fight, the Plaguefather fight and was a bit tired by the second Nurgle army fight when I got the immunity, then the same army respawned for my fifth fight before the Gardener. If another natural Nurgle army appears between me and the mansion then, uh.. well, that'll be a lot of fights. And I'm using some cheesiness to survive so much fighting since Meow can Legend-style Earthblood up wounded Teracota in any fight no matter how inconsequential. Chaos dangerous but it's a little much.

Kanos posted:

Their infantry hold perfectly fine but they have functionally no offensive power so in situations where infantry having offensive power is a big benefit(wall fights, street fights) they fall short. Cathay takes a lot longer to do the settlement/siege battles that comprise 70% of your fights, which is unfortunate.

Yeah true their infantry aren't punching too hard though they have a nice availability of anti-large and get in some nice damage whenever it comes up which is pretty often with their common enemies.

The ranged are pretty sick, I was using the iron hail shotgunners early game. The crossbows are pretty easy quareller tier as well.

CA somehow did the impossible and increased the number of sieges per campaign because now you literally can't fight a level 1 poo poo settlement without walking through a city maze for 15 minutes. :smithicide:

I started off really loving the minor settlement battles but at this point I've done so many that I'm so loving sick of them that I never want to see them again.

More or less immediately, the earlier you get it down the sooner you never have to worry about meat again and also the sooner you advance your unit roster, and west of Amblepeak is a great place - both Karak Zorn and Fire Mouth are high priority early game targets and also it's a crossroads.

Legend suggested beating up a greenskins stack, then attacking the remnants in a second battle with a solo caster lord. Presumably you could bring some SEMs too though if you don't whittle their forces down too hard.

I had an interesting situation occur during my Miao Ying campaign. A settlement I gained through confederation came under siege by the Tzeentch faction that starts next to it. I had no reinforcements nearby so I was ready to chalk it up as something to reclaim/rebuild later. But incredibly, the neighboring Greenskins of the Leafcutter Tribe decided to throw their lives on the line for an epic showdown between mortals and daemons.

I haven't played a faction in any game that does not have the tools to compete.

I'm assuming you're referring to my post since "tools to compete" was the phrase I used, and no, to clarify my language, by 'everything' I mean 'all of SFO's changes', not 'the entire game'

quote:

I trust SFO to give WH3 factions the tools they need to compete - it did a great job of emphasizing strengths and making everything competitive without watering down what made factions unique in WH2.

It made its changed factions competitive with one another without resorting to giving every faction a watered-down roster that can do everything, which is the methodology of the (bad) other large overhaul mod for WH2, Regulous or whatever it's called. This was in reference to me saying that I was worried the Warhammer 3 factions wouldn't be able to compete with WH1/2 factions

A Miao Ying doomstack. Which is Miao Ying with the Von Carstein blade and the Talons of the Night spell in human form most of the time. And one unit permanently hidden. Here's DameOffensive's first stream of it. Two of the tricks with it are she gets excellent animations in human form so almost no one can get at her, and that she actually has two healing caps; one in human form and one in dragon form.

It just makes all the factions more fun IMO, and more distinct too.

Dr Kool-AIDS

I still really wish SFO had more modularity to it so the idiosyncratic preferences of its creator in terms of overall game balance weren't tied in as much with the added faction mechanics, and the lack of that means it'll never fully replace vanilla for me in even a majority of my gameplay, but at the price of free it's hard to complain about having it available as another way to play the game.

deep dish peat moss
Jul 27, 2006

SFO is largely modular, but things have to be changed through sub-mods instead of through an in-game menu (which would be nice). There are hundreds of pages of mods for SFO in the WH2 workshop (so many it's annoying finding what you're looking for), and you can find things like removing the massive Growth nerfs and stuff like that

Ku’gath has a pretty safe area he starts in, so you can get set up easily enough. His units feel like an anvil with no hammer, just grind down enemy armies in a test of endurance, especially starting out. Powerful magic lore definitely helps, and the plagueridden hero is super helpful on a rotfly. I’d say he really struggles against a full stack of Tzeentch ranged unless you’ve kitted out an army for it.

I’m going to heavily, heavily suggest doing the realm of Tzeentch first or second as nurgle. Because at least then the wandering armies aren’t full stacks. The AI has apparently picked up focus firing, so keep any single entities out of range until the ranged is tied up in melee or you’ll see just how fast Ku’gath’s 15k+ hp evaporates. As for the survival battle itself, I think the Tzeentch battle as nurgle has got to be the most painful matchup possible. Wouldn’t feel bad autoresolving that. First wave was painful, second and third I realised that instead of defending the point I could just block every single enemy spawn point with a wall of nurgle fodder so they couldn’t use ranged attacks.

Outside of Tzeentch, haven’t really had a problem fighting the other factions. Oh and if you’re defending a settlement, nurgle has a unique barricade which provides constant healing instead of the usual MD barricade, and it’s ridiculous how much value you can get out of it with some nurglings/plaguebearers.

The units are definitely terrible, but the campaign isn't actually that hard because you have a pretty safe/cozy start point and aren't being shanked from every single possible direction at once like, say, Kislev. Rush the Crumbling Ague plague - it gives you, among other things, vanguard deployment for your entire army, which means you can negate Nurgle's greatest problem of being shot to itty bitty pieces while waddling along at slower-than-dwarf speed.

As Catfish says, get the Tzeentch realm out of the way ASAP. Tzeentch is pretty much kryptonite for Nurgle's entire faction and you have absolutely no answer for anything Tzeentch has, and the realms scale in difficulty based on how late you do them, so you want to make sure Tzeentch's realm is set to mega baby mode or you're going to pray for death. The other daemon factions aren't so bad for you - Khorne and Slaanesh hit hard but they have to engage you in melee where your toughness and stacking debuffs actually matter and you can hit back.
