I was around during Knowles' heyday and he was just as obnoxious and terrible then as he is (presumably) now. The only thing he pioneered for me was a lifestyle check so I could be sure I wouldn't end up like him.

It truly was an immense case of being in the right-place (Austin, where there is enough filming to have industry connections but not so much that everyone is in the industry, and where there is a ton of money in geek-related stuff because of all the gaming companies and tech firms) at the right-time (early internet, where it was all wild west and there weren't really any standards in place; also during the rise of the Alamo Drafthouse, where he was able to get in good with the owners and spend a lot of time riding their coattails).
