Friend has a question: Did the Soviet union, china, or any other communist country produce utopian sci-fi? If so what was it like The only major English language ones I know are trek and culture, and everything Russian I've read or seen is bleak.

mastershakeman posted:Friend has a question: The Soviet union produced the archetype for dystopian literature: We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Also tons of other good dystopian sci-fi in general the best of which spent a lot of time locked in desk drawers. Utopian not so much, but that's just a rare genre in general. Sci-fi is not really the domain of unbridled optimism, it's for thinly veiled criticism of contemporary practices.

mastershakeman posted:Friend has a question: I dunno if there's anything in the Soviet literary canon, but they did produce some utopic sci fi cartoons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBOVmZgLsxk The Mystery of the Third Planet Fairly trippy work where space travel is treated as a humdrum fact of life. The plot is they're trying to capture a rare alien and rescue it from poacher profiteers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id-_4dq2Mgw Kontakt A young artist looking for inspiration in the elements has an encounter with a psychedelic space slug. They bond over the tune of Speak Softly Love (the Godfather theme). https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x72ikwc The Return A cosmonaut returning from deep space is unable to come out of hibernation, and is in danger of dying. The entire world directs its broadcasts to his spacecraft to wake him up. This version doesn't have any subtitles, but you can infer what's going on. That's all I can recall off the top of my head. The Return used to have a version uploaded to youtube but I guess it doesn't anymore. Most Soviet sci fi animation tended to be a lot bleaker.

harry potter has some good poo poo tho like Dumbdore not giving a poo poo about harry except as a disposable weapon, almost kind disliking harry cause he has to put up with some spoiled kid and make him feel special and help him do goddamn everything. you kinda find out he was just grinning and bearing it and then snape actually caring b/c he simped Harry's mom. Wizard judas who will be hated by all but by murdering his friend, he saved everyone. true believer martyr type thing and neville also being able to kill voldemort... the prophesy doesn't care which one does it they both can do it cause they both fit idk they're pretty good books despite being british. never saw the movies

Doomed City is great but very dystopian I like that Hard To Be a God was specifically meant to be a cheerful fun space fantasy set in a world where communists had solved everything and invented powerful communist kung fu when they started writing it

Narratively it's awful, but I don't think there's many films that are more visually striking or oozing with atmosphere. You can practically smell the squalor. Well worth watching at least once and then never watching again. https://youtu.be/11sMDQIgggA
