How good is that Prado? I have really taken a liking to mine. It just goes down the road. Perfect visibility and comfort. Yours looks like a really good score. Wheels are in nice shape and the decals on the side are so good. Pretty sure I have put more than 1000 kms on the Prado so far.

So a friend of mine just told me he was looking at JDM vans... from Japan Direct Motors. I told him I'd check with you guys..

The one absolute is AWD or 4x4, strong preference for gas instead of diesel since he does some overlanding up north, moderate preference for manual transmissions.

Sure! I have an IG account but I am terrible about posting on it, I probably post more to this thread ha.

My dad and I left really early Wednesday morning and flew to Long Beach. Once we arrived at the port they checked my paperwork and let us on the property. Unfortunately both cars had flat batteries so I had to ask the pier mechanic to jump them and they both roared to life. I think someone left interior lights on in the Prado and the Delica was in 4 wheel Hi so I always do a quick walk around and make sure hubs are unlocked, oil looks good, etc. The hard part is that you never can anticipate how much fuel will be in the tank. The Delica had half a tank of diesel and the Prado's gas light came on the minute it started so the whole time we were checking out I was waiting for it to run out of diesel. Thankfully we made it to a gas station and put a combined $149 of fuel to fill up both cars! At that point is when I put the license plates on the vehicles, take a look at the tire pressure, coolant, transmission fluid and oil again just to make sure everything is in order. We stick our RAM mounts to the windshield to hold phones and plot a course to get the hell out of California as quickly as possible. But first, lunch and a celebratory beer!



We made it to Las Vegas that evening and upon pulling into the parking garage two security guards walked up to us and we told them all about the cars. Honestly I wish I could have gotten a picture of them because they were climbing around in the back of the van and checking out every detail asking a million questions! At this point we had been awake for about 18 hours so we checked into a hotel room and crashed. The next morning we got up and ate at this breakfast place called, "Pegs Glorified Ham n Eggs" and the portion sizes were outrageous. I felt like this was a 12 inch *saute pan* I ate breakfast out of...



That day we drove past the hoover dam and made our way into Kingman, Arizona. The tires on the van were starting to worry me because they were old and were showing cracks in the tread. While I was listening to my audio book I had these day dreams that I was going to blow a tire, roll over the guard rail and have my father witness my horrible, fiery demise from five car-lengths away so I called ahead in Flagstaff for a tire shop. We rolled into the tire shop about 5:30, picked from their very limited selection of tires and left the van. I ended up paying $850 for 5 Goodyear Wranglers that were a size up from the OEM tires. Sadly they aren't the customary KO2's but the guy laughed when I asked if they had those in stock. So I am happy with the tires - they are large enough to look a little aggressive but small enough where the van rides wonderful at 75mph. The picture below has the old tires, scroll to the last picture of the van to see the Goodyear Wranglers.



Speaking of the van, let's talk Delica Star Wagon versus Space Gear. I've owned both at this point and all I can say is wow, I could never go back to the Star Wagon after experiencing the Space Gear. Of course the Star Wagon has the iconic looks and fun graphics, but drive that thing up a mountain pass or two and the luster wears off real quick. I drove mine from Denver to Moab, Utah once and I was a nervous mess getting over Vail pass and not getting run off the roads by pissed off modern cars riding my rear end the whole time. Enter the Space Gear. First off, it has a marginally larger engine (2.5 vs 2.8) but it's the transmission that makes this thing a treat to drive. I can hit the pedal and be at 65mph no sweat. It has all the same quirkiness of it's earlier brethren but in an updated package. ABS, air bags, robust hvac, engine accessible via a hood and not having to lift the passenger seat. Yes it looks like a Ford Aerostar van but I still think it's awesome.

After we dropped off the van for tires, we found this wonderful Tex-Mex restaurant in Flagstaff for dinner and stayed at the newest, nicest La Quinta hotel I had ever experienced. The next morning the temperature was in the teens so I was glad that I had put the anti-gelling additive in both fuel tanks. I would also pour a glug of Diesel Kleen fuel additive every fuel up to help lubricate the injection pump and hopefully blow out some of the gunk that has been sitting in the engine for the past few months. You could tell when driving down the highway and a poof of black smoke would cough out of the tailpipe. Very satisfying feeling. I did notice the Land Cruiser had a small diesel leak coming out of the spill control valve. Once it warmed up it mostly went away but after a little truck stop googling we stopped and repaired the problem. I sprayed brake cleaner on the offensive area and cleaned it as best I could. Then there is a small nut that holds a fuel sensor solenoid in place. I took that out and wrapped it with a few rounds of plumbers tape. Carefully tightened everything back in place and bam, no more leak.



Later that day we were headed towards Albuquerque, New Mexico to stay for the night and noticed a weird noise coming from the van at highway speeds. Uh oh, I had a sick feeling it was a wheel bearing or something like that going out. It was a loud jerking sound followed by squealing bearings that got worse and worse as we kept driving. We're out in no man's land on Route 66 and make a few stops to try and figure out the problem, however when I stopped moving the noise still continued. I'd turn off the van, turn it back on and everything was normal. Finally I realized it was either the A/C compressor or the idle tensioner pulley that was the culprit. So we pulled into the Route 66 Truck Stop & Casino (fancy) and did another parking lot fix. We loosened the tensioner pulley and were able to take the belt off that went from the engine to the A/C compressor. It was 40 degrees outside anyway, I wasn't using A/C and the compressor was probably borked anyway. So we fired the van back up and no more noise! Dad and I both breathed a huge sigh of relief and we pulled into Albuquerque no more issues. There are Indian casinos dotted throughout New Mexico and we stayed close to one that evening so after dinner we swung by and tried our luck. Ended up winning some money on the craps table and hit a nice payout on a slot machine! Dinner and hotel were paid for with house money that night.



In the morning we took our time, had a nice breakfast and knew we were in the home stretch for Denver. We did about 400 miles that day and made it back no problem. Nothing too exciting to report that day, just pedal to the metal then parked them in the driveway. All said we did roughly 1,400 miles and only had one or two scares during all those miles.

The Prado is a tank, I had little to no question that it would make the journey with no issues. This one has about 160,000 miles on the clock and aside from the tiny fuel drip it was in perfect shape. My father, a life-long Chevrolet man said multiple times during the trip what a high-quality and impressive car it was to drive. I figured importing a Prado would be the stepping stone to importing a "real" Land Cruiser (whatever that means) but after driving this one I don't know if I would pay the premium for a HZJ78. I have a customer of mine that bought a 2nd gen Hilux Surf from me and he's intent on buying the Prado for his wife. If that ends up happening I will most definitely turn around and buy another Prado to replace it.

Just got a big job offer and I'm thinking if I end up taking the position it's gonna be time to send yoshi and Matt some more of my hard earned money (even though I just put a deposit down on a gr Corolla which is gonna be my first new car ever!)

That Prado and lwd delica are both rad as hell!

Yeah so apparently they invited certain dealers to a prototype showing in las vegas in december, where they had a gr corolla and also a manual supra. I had heard from the gr corolla forum that some dealers had waitlists so I emailed all the dealers in my region (utah) and all but one of them didn't know what I was talking about.

The one that DID know what I was talking about had all of the info, was extremely prompt, and told me for $500 down - refundable and transferable - I could reserve the first one for whatever MSRP ends up being. I got a full order form filled out as detailed as could be and it seems all official... The salesman I am working with has been regularly updating me and told me that he wishes they'd stop teasing it and "give the people what they want already!" I am the first in line there, so I am hoping that they stick to their word! As soon as it's officially revealed he'll call me to go over options.

Some dealers are not yet taking deposits since it's not officially released, but I am guessing the ones that are going ahead and taking them are probably the same ones who were invited to the vegas showing.

I am very very stoked. :woop:

Sold our KZJ95 Prado today and starting 2022 off very strongly. Have to get the steering wheel off the GT-Four in order to send it off to get re-wrapped in leather as it's currently very very hit.



Have new tires on the white Hilux, now it will be heading to the body shop to have that gnarly dent on the rear left door repaired, the holes along the bed repaired, and have the whole thing repainted. Will also have all the window trim replaced as well. I've always wanted to do one of those sick graphics/decal things to a vehicle and this white Hilux is going to be the one I do it to.

For a dum-dum, what's the actual difference between the Prado and normal LC? I get that they're smaller but other than that the descriptions don't make it very clear.

There are two branches of 'Land Cruiser', off road and comfort. The J40s and J70s are the off road branch, the larger, more comfortable ones are the comfort branch. The 50, 60, 80, 100, 200 and now 300s. This includes the Lexus LX. The J40 series was replaced with the J70 in 1983, with North America not getting the J70. The 70 series is still in production, and is THE Land Cruiser that has guns mounted in the back running around the middle east. In most of the world, if you asked someone to draw a picture of a Land Cruiser, it would be a 70 series, not the comfort types we get here in the USA/Canada. Chances are in your mind 'Land Cruiser' stands for the larger, more comfortable ones. The Prado was born from the 70 series, becoming its own model in the comfort line.

The Prado started out as a urban-tuned, softer version of the 70 series. Same chassis, same body panels even from the windshield back. Here is a plain 70 series and a 70 series Prado. Note the doors, handles, fuel door location, even the running boards. They share chassis designations too, both in the J70 line.




In 1990 they took the plain 70 series and softened it up a bit, giving the J70 Prado. Like the 70 series, they come in two or four door variants. In 1996 the second generation Prado became it's own Land Cruiser designation, J90, with its own unique chassis. They became a mid-range version of the comfort branch. The third generation Prado released in 2002 was then used to make the Lexus GX sold here in North America. This continues to this day. Now when you see a Lexus GX, you are really looking at a Land Cruiser Prado, just done up a bit like the Lexus LX is a done up Land Cruiser.

SO, to directly answer your question, yeah, a Prado is basically a smaller Land Cruiser. The difference is in the first generation, as those Prados are 70 series making them especially tough. They are my personal favorites, especially since they come in two doors:

We get both the "comfort" and Prados here, but in my mind somehow the 100 is the one. But yeah that two-door Prado looks amazing. And I really have no use for a vehicle like this but I still want one now.

Pajero Pinin are fun toys but every car i've seen had rust spots somewhere. They are stupid cheap here in Italy, a last gen model (2005-2006) can be found for 2-3k€

It has been pretty well covered. The quick and dirty version is the Prado fits directly between the "Hilux Surf" (4Runner) and Land Cruiser. Understanding that the Surf is much more sport/budget and the Land Cruiser is full luxury and heavy duty. The Prado is definitely up-market over the Surf in terms of luxury and comfort. Especially true starting with the J90/95 series. It is in a similar size class as the Surf and smaller than the full size Land Cruiser.

With some 2000kms on the green Prado now I can definitely say it is a very nice car.

Yeah but that’s the Evolution, the one they built for Dakar with Lancer Evo engines. They’re going for 2.5mil yen and higher on the used car sites here.

Doesn't seem to be a very clear specific reason, but generally it's a mix of 'more reliable' and 'NATO spec'. I'm not an electrician so I'm not sure why this is true, but there it is. As for which cruisers are 24v and which are 12v, well, let's go down that hole.

Non-Prado 70 series are all 24v (even the bulbs but I guess the headlights aren't) The rest of the bulbs absolutely are 24v) in Japan up to a certain year into the 2000s, then they change a bit. If the 70 series looks like this with the front fenders and tapered hood:

It will have 2 batteries and be 24v. There is a Toyota OEM step down box behind the head unit, specifically just for the head unit, so that's 12v.

If it is a Prado (70 or 90) it might have two batteries, might not, but it will be 12v. Some of the Prados are winter versions, with two batteries and slightly different starters, others are summer versions with other, more different starters. Here in Florida I can't tell the difference between the two types. Most certainly a difference between the two though.

To complicate matters further, even non-Land Cruisers will follow this trend. Hilux pickups and Hilux Surfs will do this summer/winter type. Presumably following the same line with a different starter, though I've only ever seen documentation specifically for the 70 series Prados about it.

60 series Land Cruisers, if diesel, are 24v across the board.

80 series diesel Cruisers are weird in that they are all 24v starters but the rest of the electrics are 12v. You have the batteries on either side of the trucks with a warning laying it all out:

I don't know about diesel 100s or even the 2000s up 70s and what their systems are like since I'm locked behind 25 years.

What I read earlier is that each headlight is hooked to a single battery each, so it's really important to replace them in pairs so it doesn't unbalance the batteries.

1995 Toyota Chaser Tourer V. RWD, 5 speed manual, twin turbo 1JZ-GTE, completely stock and untouched, for real this time. We've had a 1992 Cresta already, quite similar to this one, though a Cresta is supposed to be the 'luxury' version of the x90s, where the 'Chaser' is the sporty version. Practically it means the badge is different, the name is different, the doors are different (Chaser will have frameless, Cresta doors were framed) and the front and rears are a bit different. Doesn't matter what flavor you get, any Tourer V will have the 1JZ-GTE under the hood, either automatic or manual transmissions. Naturally, the manuals are more uncommon than the automatics. This Chaser is truly all original as it still has it's OEM head unit installed.

Dock pictures in already of our 95 Chaser. Some paint correction needed to make it perfect, and of course a detail. These X90s are righteous, and it's cool to get a Chaser variant along with the completely OEM condition.

Somehow there’s still plenty of those caldinas surviving down here in New Zealand but they’ve definitely had hard lives. None are anywhere near as tidy as that though, that’s mint.

How could that ever make sense buying that Caldina for a million. I’ve had them 10-15k is best I could imagine selling here. I’d consider a Caldina daily but not really I could never go back from giant Toyota luxury sedan

Holy poo poo, I somehow didn’t know Toyota played the “make a stealth AWD turbowagon” game as well. That owns, that’s awesome as hell.
