Raccoons do seem to fit a lot of the criteria for taming, if not necessarily domestication. They're gregarious and social, have vaguely recognisable body language, eat a lot of the same stuff we eat and seem to be quite intelligent.

Yeah, though I think I get the gist; raccoon behaviours are at the very least too far off from cats and dogs (both carnivores) for similar techniques to work, and they're too large and dextrous to be kept like rodents. I suppose one point of comparison might be monkeys; despite technically being possible to tame and live with, you still need a dedicated enclosure for them to live comfortably, and can't be left unsupervised in human environments like cats and dogs.

Seems like a mistake to leave that rifle within reach of a raccoon. I saw some speculative fiction documentary recently where a raccoon like animal has learned how to not only use guns, but how to improve and manufacture them. Wait...I think I can find a picture

I thought there was a viral clip of a raccoon shooting a handgun that I must have seen, as I just kept anticipating the raccoon reaching down and picking up a gun loving and naturally operating it. I hear movie lines in normal conversation all the time, I can't believe I just kinda forgot all the marvel movies for a while.

Wonder if that was the beginning of rabies or just a young adult male raccoon without his gang. I’ve literally come face to face with a raccoon as it transversed my ladder in a shed up to the attic and there was no snarling. Although the two tiny raccoons that used to come eat the feral cats’ food would snarl over it between themselves when it was their turn to eat. They did not snarl at the cats or me.
