Pretty comprehensive video comparing the S22 Ultra camera with the Pixel 6 Pro.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIEv3pkHgi8

The summation is S22 Ultra wins on versatility (more zoom, native 108mp output in good light) and it has better portrait mode and shorter nighttime capture.

The Pixel 6 Pro wins on overall nighttime image quality and (surprisingly) nighttime video with main lens. Zoom nighttime video is a mess with the Pixel 6 Pro, probably due to it cropping the main sensor. It also tended to put on the more natural shots and was better at capturing motion clearly.

Samsung wasn't just marketing with their lens coatings and it really does seem to cut down on flares (something I had a huge problem with on the S21 Ultra).

Both were pretty much a draw during the day.

I was REALLLY surprised to see how well the hybrid 10x zoom on the Pixel 6 pro did compared against the 10x optical of the S22 Ultra.

You really can't go wrong with either though you are more likely to have to futz with the S22 Ultra a bit more to bring out what it can do vs point and shoot with the Pixel.

Fedex, unsurprisingly, let me down today and delayed delivery by a day.

I’m not really considering buying a new phone, but, honestly, considering downsizing from this phone to a smaller one.

Is there any phone out there with a smaller screen AND a bigger battery?

I really miss the Note 3, with its removable and bigger thicc battery you could pop in it.

The Pixel 5a is a bit smaller than the 4XL and has a large 4680 mAh cell which makes the SD765G last for a very very long time. You would give up on high refresh rate though.

You could also seek out a used Pixel 5 which is even smaller and has a decent sized (4000mAh) battery.

FedEx delivered my s22 ultimate today - thing's huge. Without a case it's about as big as the note 8 it's replacing with an otterbox commuter case. So far everything seems to work nicely, but I haven't really had a chance to do too much with it yet.

my partner has the small Pixel 4, I have a Sony Xperia 5 II and while mine is taller, they are almost exactly the same width. it's a very comfortable phone to use and doesn't sacrifice as much of the screen size as an actual small phone. the battery is 4000 mAh and gets me easily through. a day of moderate to heavy use (~6hrs SOT). the camera would be a downgrade though

Is there any predictable sale on Google stuff outside like Black Friday?

I'm getting really sick of Motorola's terrible delays in updating their phones, and thinking my best option is probably a Pixel 6, but have a hard time justifying the list price right now.

The 5a 5G would pretty much be a sidegrade to my current phone, although I am still kind of considering it.

It's getting to the point I feel like I should be warning people not to buy Motorola phones, or at least not buy the ones that cost more than $300. If my phone would just get updated to Android 11 I wouldn't be stressed about it, but somehow the announcement my phone is supposed to get Android 12 has made being stuck on Android 10 even more stressful.

Yeah, at this point. can really only recommend Moto phones in the sub $300 price range since there isn’t anything much better from an update perspective.

Get a little higher than that though, and there are a bunch of options. A52 5g and Pixel 5a will both solid, well supported options.

Yes, but that's a good reminder that while rebooting doesn't seem to fix it, futzing around with "Cast screen" in the Home app does seem to make it work for a while.

I like as close to vanilla Android as possible, so Samsung is a no-go for me. I feel like if I'm going to spend more money on a phone it should at least be an upgrade, which the Pixel 6 would be, but the cost/benefit ratio on the 5a 5G is something I'm still debating.

I'm still hoping Motorola follows through on their promises and updates my One 5G Ace, but holy hell am I tired of waiting. If they provided a roadmap or any actual information it would be more tolerable, but the best we have is a Motorola rep saying in the support forums that the Android 11 update is still supposed to happen, and then the Android 12 update some time after that. The same phone in Canada is on Android 11, and the Verizon UW version is on Android 11, but all the other versions in the US are still stuck on Android 10.

Other Motorola phones are apparently in the same boat, but with Ace it seems especially infuriating because it is a solidly midrange handset with specs comparable to the Pixel 5a 5G, and it is still being actively promoted and sold despite still being on Android 10. All while Motorola is promising it will get updated to Android 12.

If you can catch your fingernail in it, nothing short of removing a layer of glass is going to buff it out. Otherwise you can try to fill it in (like mentioned above) with loca glue and a tempered glass screen protector.

I'm in the process of locking down a new android cellphone for a senile, elderly relative. I'd welcome any suggestions on things to do before I mail it off to him.

He primarily stays in contacts with friends through email and text, so a simplified phone like a jitterbug is out, but his mind is going very quickly and he often makes mistakes that put his phone in airplane mode or turns off the ringer or any number of things that cause his primary means of his friends and family communicating with him to fail. Most recently, he set his phone down somewhere and lost it. It ran out of charge before anyone realized and could have used device locator software to find it. So now I'm setting up the replacement.

I'm trying to do as many things as possible on this new phone to make his life easier:
- Uninstalled / hidden all the apps he doesn't use, so his app menu is down to like five icons
- Locked the home screen so he can't accidentally drag icons off the screen and lose them.
- Airplane Mode, Do Not Disturb, and Sound-Off buttons have been removed from the notification tray.
- Phone has been registered with both google and samsung 'find my device' services, and permission to share that location data with family members has been given.
- Contemplating installing anydesk or something similar so I can remote in and fix poo poo when something inevitably breaks.

I'm thinking I might also disable the Play Store service so he can't install new apps at all?

Here's the thing: this poor guy is bored, depressed, and senile, and basically spends all day every day doing nothing but watching tv and looking up porn on his phone. He's an adult and we, his family, have no desire to stop this (IE, installing website-blocking tech on his phone), let him do what he wants. But I would like to prevent him from getting scammed (as he has several times in the past few years) into giving his credit card number to sketchy sites or installing scammy apps. His last phone, when I worked on it at Thanksgiving, had, no exaggeration, fifty different 'antivirus'/'battery optimizer'/'app cleaner' apps, all competing with each other for system resources. The phone was warm to the touch at all times.

So, yeah, any suggestions, things I'm forgetting, would be welcome.

Watch the YouTube install video before you attempt, the installation is a bit finicky but if you have a level surface to work on it should go fine if you follow the instructions. So, yeah, the S22 is probably going to throttle more, but they are all going to throttle a ton. SD8 Gen 1 is a spicy tamale and if you want to push your phone for hours on end playing games, you are better off with a gaming phone with active cooling.

I'm just going to drop this tidbit in here because it was something that has been plaguing me for atleast 6 months on Google Fi and might solve issues for other people

If you're having trouble enabling RCS in Android Messages aka it just gets stuck on verifying, double check to make sure you're not enrolled in the beta for Android Messages and/or Carrier Services. This wasn't on ANY of the "I can't get RCS to enable" search results till I saw someone mention it two days ago on /r/GoogleFi

Once you're unenrolled, uninstall/update till you're back on the main branch instead of the beta branch.

I'll see you in heck!
I've been living with an issue that I finally resolved, so figured I would share.
I'm on the SixelPro fully stock and up to date apps.
Starting with the Jan security update using voice-to-text would crash my keyboard. I found I could go and reopen the app and force it to get it to work again, but obv that's annoying as poo poo and its not V2T. I had gboard(beta) Swiftkey and Swiftkey(beta) installed and it would happen with all 3. I tried getting off both beta kbs, but that didn't work. So I hoped Feb security would fix it, nope.

I was able to find a solution on Samsung forums of all places. To fix it I had to go into :
Settings > + Manage On-Screen Keyboards and then Disable "Google Voice Typing [Legacy]"

I don't see an app for it so I can't uninstall or update it. I haven't looked super hard yet. Hopefully it doesn't get enabled on a future update. Annoying as hell but it seems to be good now.

Calling the install "finicky" is an understatement. The amount of parts you get and the steps needed are pretty ridiculous, to the point where the box doesn't even include instructions just "scan QR code, watch video". The video I watched was this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFaYpMf8y68&t=444s

This vid is better than the Whitestone Dome one, and I still botched the first attempt. You need to watch the video and play along up to the point where they open the glue container onto the surface of your screen -- stop playing along at that point, and just watch how they manuver the glue blob to the center of the screen, pull the key, and drop the glass onto the glue.

All that said, the end result is pretty drat good, and the glue would absolutely fill in smaller scratches. I would recommend the product, but with reservations -- you really need to prepare, watch, and practice before committing to it, the first time.

EDIT: I just watched the vid I posted and, while it's better than the Whitestone vid, it does make the crucial mistake of skipping the fact that you need to a) open the cap on the glue container, b) insert it into the jig, then c) open the cap on the back end of the container (which is now pointing up into the air). Without opening the back end of the container, the glue won't come out of the container, and will just trickle a few drops onto the phone. This is what hosed me on my first attempt.

Yeah it's definitely a more involved process but if you take your time and have a flat surface to work on it's not hard. Just make you watch either video all the way thru at least once so you have an idea of what you're doing. The real crucial part is getting all the glue onto the center of the glass, that's what I screwed up the first time where my work surface wasn't very level and the glue flowed too far to the bottom so when I dropped the glass it didn't spread out evenly.

He doesn't want a smartphone, and he wants an android least of all.
My suggestion would be a featurephone and an iPad.

A featurephone because the days/weeks of battery will make contact much more reliable. And an iPad because it does all the smartphone stuff on a larger screen, has better assistance features and it's nigh-on impossible to get malware onto it unless you're specifically looking for it or trying to do it, with some knowledge and tools.
I guess this answer is predicated on the phone you've already acquired being returnable or usable elsewhere to not be a loss, but what you're asking is "how do I get all the water out of the hole I'm digging in this well?" when the problem is where you're trying to dig.

There are very few measures you can take to insulate a user from harm who is perfectly willing to press "install for more titties"

Can't wait to get off this OnePlus train. Got the 7T two years ago and the battery's gone to poo poo with the Android 11 update it's still stuck on while my work-issued Galaxy A42 5G just got updated to Android 12 last night.

I'm not really willing to spend more that what I spent last time on the 7T and Pixels aren't officially available where I live, so I'm gonna have to go Samsung if I want official warranty with decent software support/updates. Probably gonna have to wait for whatever 5G A-series phones will come out this year (maybe the A73) to take advantage of the 3-year OS update commitment.

I'm actually really surprised about your 7T battery experience.

Had mine over 2 years and this is what accubattery says (and feels accurate in my experience:)

I use mine heavily all day even at work, off WiFi, I almost always fall asleep listening to a video playing on it with the screen off, and a top up in the morning while I shower and get ready and a top up at night when I decompress before bed and it's perfect for me. I don't leave it plugged in overnight.

One of the really disappointing things looking at potential upgrades is it seems like I'm going to have worse screen on time and worse charging speed with almost anything else...
