The actual history of ninjas is pretty lame.

Like a solid 99% of them were just absolutely wrecked in combat by the feudal version of mall cops.

At best 1 in 100 would pull off an assassination and then get caught by some guard.

Also, samurai were pretty much dirty cops, the golden age of piracy was mostly lame raids on fishing towns and everyone getting caught by the sea cops, and the entirety of the wild west really boils down to 8 shootouts lasting like 30 seconds total.

Never study history. It's so loving boring and depressing. Nothing cool ever happened.

Lots of gingham.

"Mister, I don't want no trouble, huh. I just came down town here to get some hard rock candy for my kids, some gingham for my wife. I don't even know what gingham is, but she goes through about 10 rolls a week of that stuff. I ain't looking for no trouble, mister."

This.. is not actually true? The golden age of piracy is super interesting and mostly involved raids on shipping.

Yeah, sort of like the idea of the ninja or even certain samurai stuff coming from theater, I think a lot of wild west cowboy stuff came from stunt shows and shooting exhibitions and stuff.

kiimo

A lot of the old west glamorized gunfighters were just a bunch of shithead criminals running back and forth from Kansas to Texas before they could get proper law set up and it lasted for like 25 years max.

I know its a real movie, but the cast list is like when you're half-drunk and making up 'perfect' cast lists for imaginary movies with friends.

(Mine is Hugh Grant as a Bond villain, but played exactly like his character in all those Brit rom-coms of the '90's.

"Ah fuckity-gently caress, this is...uh...a bit awkward, Mr Bond...I...uh...I'm afraid I'm going to have have to...uh...KILL you.")

It's more that they were raiding so much that the French decided to just give one of them, a dude called Rollo* , his own duchy on the condition he would use it to defend northern France from his former colleagues.

*Probably Göngu-Hrólfur Rögnvaldsson a chieftain's son from Norway. Called "Walking -Hrólfur" because he was said to he too large and heavy to be carried by the fairly small Nordic horses so he had to go on foot.

The documentary on it I saw implied strongly that the “French decided” here is being very generous to the amount of choice the French had in the matter.
