The Russians had enough time to track F-22s over Syria to know how/what to look for. Given that we know they've got S-400 batteries in place I don't think we'd want to roll those dice.

IIRC, the USAF specifically had them fly with stuff on external hard points so the Russians/Iran/whoever couldn't get profiles on them for when they fly completely stealth.

We are not flying F-22s over Ukraine. Also the most rapidly available F-22s just got deployed to UAE. Clancy poo poo. Speaking of conspiratorial bullshit, what did he know?! https://twitter.com/theweeknd/status/1496690244753641472?s=21

The F-117 got got because we flew predictable routes and they used some clever jerry-rigged emitter setup that allowed them to triangulate the whereabouts of the jet (but not radiate long enough to eat a HARM) to launch a volley of SA-3s at him. Supposedly a *second* F-117 got damaged *after* the 3/27/99 incident but was able to make it back to base.

Yes and yes. I just mean to say that (even if we were dumb enough to get directly involved) we shouldn't think of the F-22 or F-35 as immune to ground fire, and the loss of an airframe and any debris recovery would be Bad.

The F-117 pilot and the dude most chiefly responsible for shooting him down became friends, actually. I've not met a *lot* of Nighthawk pilots, only two, actually, but neither of them were anything but top shelf Grade A dudes. You've gotta have a lot of confidence to be a doorkicker flying a plane that can only fly subsonic and has a tendency to turn into a cartwheeling Dorito chip when it's hit.

My apologies I got Douchenozzle confused with the pilot and yeah I recall them meeting now, and feel quite silly for mixing the two up. Especially since the F117 pilot was not a thunder turd or anything.

Reminds me of a tale in Blind Man's Bluff of an underwater collision between a US and Soviet sub, both captains being utterly convinced they'd sunk the other and meeting after the Cold War.
