Socially awkward AvGeeks don't care. Some might go straight up Caro if Russia just cost them a "rare spot."

God help us if there are any one-of-a-kind locomotives in Ukraine. :ohdear:

I'm a bit surprised the operator didn't evacuate it somewhere else last week. Is the never-completed second one in Ukraine, or is it stored in Russia?

I thought it was in Ukraine, but I just checked Wikipedia and it has a source saying Antonov sold it and it was to be completed in China.

Ah ok. If it was in Ukraine I could see an overexcited journalist thinking it had been blown to (suspiciously neatly arranged) pieces but so much for that theory.

How does it disconnect the connector? Some kind of piston?

For boats and stuff, there's a that's the same concept, pushes out the plug with a motor. Supposedly popular on emergency vehicles. https://www.bluesea.com/products/category/38/122/Connectors/Sure_Eject

Two Il-76s full of troops would be ~250 dead most likely. Not a good choice to fly them within range of people with missiles.

From what I've heard, USAF confirmed that yesterday Ukrainian SAMs bagged two Il-76s filled with paratroops. Nobody knows the death toll, the Russians have those little paradrop tankettes they like to yeet after their paratroops.

So, three days in, the most obvious failure is the Red Air Force, who pretty much everybody assumed would have air superiority in 24/48 hours. The fact that the Ukrainian AF is still operational, let alone having all sorts of air defense artillery in operation is a delightful surprise. Having NATO/USAF units feeding Ukraine intel is obviously a big advantage, but the weird thing is that I sorta figured Russia would be doing the same thing over Russia, and apparently they are not? Didn't Beriev make an AWACS out of an IL-76?

I am obviously on the side of Ukraine here, but I still feel sad for the 250 Russian kids in the plane who got blown up because their insane megalomaniac of a dictator wishes he had a bigger penis. There are stories coming out that the Russian troops were lied to, not told where they were going, told that they weren't going to invade, or told that they would be greeted as liberators. As is usual in war, the people suffering the consequences had no say in the matter.

The entire thing is an enormous and tragic waste of life, and the only death I'm actually rooting for is Putin's.
