Yeah I keep seeing footage of a handful of Russians just chilling somewhere. No vast tank columns or whatever.

Even the missiles/air combat seems pretty sporadic. Think of the footage over Baghdad in 03 compared to any footage I've seen of Ukrainian cities. It feels like Russians are still probing.

Which is good maybe this whole mess will end without the usual vast civilian death toll.

yeah bbc's big headline today was something about countless lives lost in ukraine and then listed a figure like 120. sounds pretty loving insignificant considering an entire country is being invaded. "200 dead in baghdad market bombing" used to be a page 4 headline

Mostly true except the Russians are doing quite well in the north and south where less defense has been mounted. That in turn threatens the capital and to cut off the east, where by most accounts the Ukrainians have been putting up an effective resistance.

The Russians are absolutely holding back.
The amount of ordnance they could throw around beggars belief, but they let that airhead get dispersed rather than flatten anything that moved around it. Which is good, I suppose, the VDV men knew what they signed up for, the Ukrainian civilians anywhere near that airport did not.

Also the CIA are always hyper competent operators as opposed to the CIA.

paradrop operations being repulsed doesn't necessarily result in 100% casualties/prisoners, because they can just run off into the forests and hide out (and maybe become partisans)

it does usually mean that they're no longer a combat-effective force, but unless it's a small enough area that you're absolutely surrounded, you can just run away and hide

So maybe a Battalion+.
It’s a setback, for sure, but even then a comparatively small force compared to what they might’ve gone for. They haven’t been dropping BMDs or anything crazy.

They're only holding back in the sense that they're not trying to level the country. That's an obvious non goal. They don't want to wreck infrastructure, just destroy the military and topple the government. They're doing the best they can to accomplish the goal they have.

Other than a few cruise missiles, Russia’s bomber force has been restrained too. Some of those Tupolevs can carry an absurd amount of SSMs and ARMs. Maybe they’ll hammer Kievs air defence when the tank columns push closer, but they haven’t exactly been dumping ordnance on it tonight.

so far the fighting has seem very.. civil i guess is the word i would use? i would have expected to witness a war crime or two at this point

closest thing so far is that video of a jet fighter seemingly bombing some civilians but according to aviation nerds on reddit the planes engines were damaged and it was ammo dumping to be able to get back home

I'm honestly surprised at how relatively easy Russia has taken this so far. If they get mad or frustrated they might go full Syria/Chechnya where they scorch earth everything.
