Whoever ambushed them might not have had too much time to clean up before the unit behind them showed up.

They probably will. It's worth remembering this invasion started all of 24 hours ago.

I was actually wondering if this phase of the war is a monstrous decision to send conscripts down highways with no goal or plan other than to deplete Ukrainian munitions.

e: Does anyone have a source for that 65500 gamma count? News was saying "It's old dust kicked up by tanks and shelling" which would be technically true even if they did breach the sarcophagus.

This would imply that Putin, et al are playing some 4D chess kind of poo poo. If that were the case, though, I would have to think their plan would not involve taking the losses that they appear to be taking.

There’s some playbacks from flightradar24 going around. I don’t know why your military aircraft flying through an active war zone over the country you’re currently invading would have its transponder on, but I’m not a military strategist

A culture of rewarding the people who say what the strong man wants to hear while defenestrating anyone who doesn't isn't conducive to providing solid advice. Stack in a few iterations of the game and some bad/optimistic intelligence and you can see breathtakingly bad decisions being made. They just don't normally involve nuclear- armed states.

Asking again in case it got lost in the shuffle: Does anyone have a source on the 65500 mSv/hr count for Chernobyl provided earlier in this thread? I've tried googling "State Specialised Enterprise 'Ecocentre'" which gives me nothing helpful. IAEA doesn't support it. Anyone able to chime in?

current flight of fancy: Putin's inner circle enthusiastically fed into his paranoia bullshit about Ukraine/NATO knowing full well it would end in disaster/not in the five day timetable he expected. This then gives them the ironclad cover to get rid of him altogether or critically weaken him. He's a cold war relic and his antics have been a nuisance to business lately. The oligarchs don't care about Russia's perceived standing in world rankings, force projection or being invaded by NATO to anything like the degree he does. Nowadays it's just business, they'd all like a bigger yacht and weird old grandpa from the 80s has been getting in the way of that.
