This then gives them the ironclad cover to get rid of him altogether or critically weaken him. He's a cold war relic and his antics have been a nuisance to business lately. The oligarchs don't care about Russia's perceived standing in world rankings, force projection or being invaded by NATO to anything like the degree he does. Nowadays it's just business, they'd all like a bigger yacht and weird old grandpa from the 80s has been getting in the way of that.
