It just yells out the time and your device figures it out. Military GPS is encrypted, but it's not like they could blacklist you if you somehow figured out the encryption keys. Maybe they could change the key regularly? I don't actually know. But while the US could theoretically shut down commercial GPS satellites or gently caress with their accuracy when over a given landmass, they can't prevent a specific group from using them.

GPS used to be intentionally inaccurate for every non military user till the early 2000s iirc - selective availability

It seems like they were. BBC Russia got a leak and it seems like Putin was only really giving the real plan to his Chechen goon squad. The rest of the military got a few days, maybe a week. Plus had to just idle on the border longer than expected

Yes, but that's easy to implement - you have one channel giving time accurate to x and another encrypted channel giving time accurate to y. If you have the encryption keys, you get y. If not, you only get x.

Wikipedia has a good explanation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_analysis_for_the_Global_Positioning_System#Selective_availability

I was right - kind of. Back when selective availability was a thing, everyone received the same signal, except it was intentionally wrong by a pseudorandom amount. If you had the encryption keys, you could "undo" this error and get the actual measurement. But that system has been turned off so everyone gets the accurate signal. Only way to prevent someone from getting GPS in an area is to literally turn it off.

Ah, possible. I only worked with commercial applications and we weren't super concerned about about an actual GPS shutdown (because if it happened we'd have bigger problems), just that it was possible and that's why multiple systems exist.

No, you were right. There's better and worse signal from each system depending on where you are in the world and what time of day it is

I worked in agricultural autoguidance where being off by an inch or two could be a big deal. You'd sometimes switch the set of satellites a couple times a day. Or pay extra for the option to connect to everything at once and the system would switch out for you.

Because the SA effect was common for all users in a given area it could be countered broadcasting a correction determined by the error in the location of a fixed base-station (differential GPS).

Here in Australia it was done using the national youth music station JJJ.

I think they stopped the accurate GPS restrictions when Russia got glosnass operational. There was no point restricting them at that point and all it was doing was artificially making its use in civilian applications difficult.

If you were writing this as a war drama, now is the interlude where the dictator is enraged and made vulnerable by his hubrustic overextention, so he selects which loyalist general is to be scapegoated and made to fall on his own sword to reinforce that dear leader cannot fail, he can only be failed, as the remaining right hand men start to grow increasingly worried about their own skins.

So, since everything's been weaselbrained fiction since 2015, go for it. Make it reality. Which russian general is on the block to be lambasted and fired in the next 12 hours?
