Yes, I forgot about India. They get a shitpile of fertilizer from Russia and Belarus and food security is, and going to be, really affected by this stupidity. So it's somewhat pragmatic on their part to remain loosely non-aligned. I think they're going to have to find a new supermarket for arms soon, though.

Yeah. Potential for bank runs. Couple hours here and the general foreign exchange markets open (central bank markets run 24/7 but we won't get good data until the big commercial markets open), we'll see what the RUB does.

Putin will feel a lot of heat this week from his economy, the oligarchs are going to see a lot of wealth evaporate. Russians in general are going to be faced with vanishing savings and bank runs. There is real potential for the political situation to deteriorate.

I'll admit it's pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few conversations happen amongst the power brokers on whether to just put a bullet in Putin, call it "Putin's folly" and pull the troops back.

I've seen a few videos like this where regular citizens are stepping in front of tanks. I'm surprised as hell that the Russians haven't been shooting at them when they do that. I wonder if that speaks to the level of morale that the average Russian soldier has right now in Ukraine. Like I'm sure many of them don't really believe the bullshit they've been hearing from Russian media about Ukrainians all being Nazis and whatnot. And Ukrainians arent super foreign to Russians like they share very similar cultures and of course most Ukrainians speak Russian. It probably must feel like if American soldiers were sent to invade Canada.

I mean, blocking the road with warm bodies is proving to be a powerful tactic for peaceful resistance in the modern age. The aggressors have to be willing to mow down unarmed civilians live on YouTube, and very, very few are. It's also the point where you completely lose the propaganda war (although they're already not doing great what with hospitals and kindergartens bombed.)

It will be interesting to see how it's countered moving forward. The obvious easy counter is just to drive the column around the roadblock on parallel roads. But that works less well on a freeway.

I think you're saying "The convention as written prohibits this" -- you definitely seem to be right about this -- and the person you're quoting is either saying "it ought not" or alternatively "whether it ought to or not, it's not viable in light of the different environment we operate in". It's maybe a little more interesting to discuss the two latter possibilities, given no court is going to hear this violation any time soon.

My instinct is that showing videos of people calling home, the thing we're talking about right now, is prurient and propagandistic and probably not something we should encourage, but that there are other exceptions I would make that would fall afoul of the current language. I think applying the kind of basic media protections most countries already do (black barring peoples eyes, disguising voices, blurring where relevant) would be one step I'd want to take. Applications should probably build in these kinds of privacy-preserving tools in order to be able to enable this easier to do.

On a basic level, the documentation of history (if done neutrally and with respect and dignity) would seem to me to outweigh the personal privacy interest of an individual combatant. In this particular instance we also have evidence that the belligerent is engaging in active deceit to its own citizens and to the world well in excess of the regular fog of war and it seems a little silly to tie Ukraine's hands from establishing with a higher level of credibility that their narrative is more truthful than Russia's. The other thing I'd add is that I genuinely do believe that the extent to which the global community has united to help Ukraine stems from Ukraine's savvy use of soft power (via official channels + citizen journalism on social media). In a world where we militate against this kind of behavour, we would sap Ukraine's soft power and reinforce the existing power differential in hard power between the countries. It does not surprise me that the language today doesn't incorporate this balancing act because it was written in a time where many of these things were not concerns, these are basically issues that are maximum are as old as CNN and really come into their own post-2010 with photo and video social media and smartphones.

But, as others have said above, this wouldn't be in my top 10,000 priorities right now.
You are allowed to photograph and film PoWs you've captured for historical documentation, interrogation/intel, identification etc, however you are not allowed not make them public outside of judicial proceedings if the PoWs can be individually identified. There are special exceptions to even this, like for instance if publishing it would give evidence of violations of international law or if the PoW is an internationally wanted criminal etc. The third convention (that deals with PoWs) was originally ratified in 1949, but the Geneva conventions are like most laws and especially international conventions constantly updated through legal interpretation and case law. If someone thinks the Geneva conventions are wrong, or that countries shouldn't decide to break the treaty, one should perhaps first be sure to understand what it actually says and why. For instance when you say "It does not surprise me that the language today doesn't incorporate this balancing act" let me again cite from the ICRC:

quote:

It is thus necessary to strike a reasonable balance in the implementation of this provision between the benefit derived from making information regarding prisoners of war public, especially given the high value of such materials, and the possible humiliation and even physical harm they may cause to those who appear in them. Accordingly, any materials that enable individual prisoners to be identified must normally be regarded as subjecting them to public curiosity and, therefore, may not be transmitted, published or broadcast.

Regardless if one is opposed to the protection of PoWs from being used for propaganda, I don't think it would be great to give Russia an excuse to do the same to Ukrainian PoWs. The Geneva Conventions are one of the only successful restraints we have on the terror of war, it's not something to take lightly or handwave as antiquated.
