It's kinda amazing how fast we went from every head of government in the world heading to Russia to sit down at long table and hang off Putin's lips to it looking kinda not out of the question anymore that he won't be in his chair a month from now. It may still work out for him, but it may also turn out that he crashed his country and completely destroyed his 20 years worth of political/historical standing within no more than two weeks

That’s true, interesting to see Putin allies like Le Pen in France scrambling as they either have to green light an extremely unpopular war of aggression or make excuses

I'm pretty concerned that when his government and his state TV put out statements regarding nuclear weapons and 'why do we need a world without russia?', what they're being forced to state really means is 'why do we need a world without putin?' (in his mind)

I hope their launch controls are... cautious

So what were airline routes like during the Cold War? Did the Soviets allow airliners to fly over? I assume not because of KAL 007 but I don't know if that was normal behavior or particularly high tension. Whenever I've gone back and forth to Asia the route went over Russia. Going to Seoul you did a big loop into the Yellow Sea to avoid North Korea. How would you fly from, say, Chicago to Incheon without crossing Russia?

Not sure about transiting Soviet airspace but, believe it or not, there were even nonstop Pan Am and Aeroflot flights between JFK and Moscow. It looks like the first run was 1968-1978 for Pan Am (with Aeroflot tossed by Reagan in 1981), with resumption around 1986-87.

Completely useless trivia. The flight number was 30 and Delta's JFK-Moscow flight for many years kept that number after they bought the Europe network from Pan Am.

depending where exactly you were going, a stop in either anchorage or gander and then a long way around.

Also it's likely that all the civil aviation authorities are enjoying the hell out of banning Russian overflights, Russia are kind of dicks about overflights allowing only one airline from any given country overflight rights and the fees are borderline extortionate. Payback is sweet.

I don't want to overstate things, the fundamental reasons why Russia has a permanent UN Security Council seat with veto haven't disappeared, and so nobody will throw them out of that body. But there likely enough exists a majority for the aforementioned "sternly worded letter" to condemn Russia's invasion. And Russia (and China) don't have a veto to stop this. This is by far the most likely outcome imho.

But yes, in theory the General Assembly can do a lot more, and the major powers can't veto those decisions. They could impose some sort of sanctions that all UN members would be treaty bound to observe.
