Being a serial killer is a lot of hard work. The ones that don’t get caught eventually slow down and stop as they age into their 40s and become less horny because it interferes with their ability to pay their bills. Probably some people would be serial killers but they lack the work ethic, although some proportion of mass shooters are probably from that demographic.

I've been around people who would be bastards if they could get away with it, and I've been around people who would be horrified at the thought even if there were no repercussions. Usually the former are pretty open about it if they trust you enough. They seem pretty rare and generally have a lot of problems. (So no surprise Peterson is probably one.)

I think if people are reasonably well adjusted, they don't really want to do anything to harm other people most of the time. It's possible to manipulate people into it, whether via authority or hijacking the "oh poo poo my/my family's survival is on the line" brain bits or whatever, but under neutral circumstances the vast majority of people just want to chill with friends and at most will be OK with watching pretend violence.

Probably the worst crime most people would do if they could get away with it would be like shoplifting, and I still think most people wouldn't bother. We're pack animals with a strong innate social sense, so it's hard for most of us to go against whatever rules we're inculcated with, even if there's no apparent reason or repercussion.

Yeah I knew a guy who joined the Marines too, and he had some loving gross things to say when he came back about how many teenagers he killed.

Not to go all Doug Stanhope on the thread but yeah at least the military is there for assholes who want to kill other people, to go out and (ideally) kill other assholes who want to kill people.

I agree with your point otherwise, that most of us are good when it comes down to it. :unsmith:

Society only works because people are generally nice. You can commit minor crimes and get away with it most of the time, up to and including punching a random stranger in the face. There could never be enough police, even if they were actually interested in fighting crime, and most people don't live in the state of alertness needed to effectively respond to any danger. Despite the news, the majority of people in most cities will never experience any crime beyond someone knocking over their garbage bins.

every now and then i'm in dollar general or whatever and it will suddenly occur to me that i could stick literally anything in my pocket and not pay for it because there's only one or MAYBE two people working, they are insanely overworked and thus don't care, and they see me every day because i live nearby and they like me so even in the insanely unlikely event that i got caught i could just say "whoops my bad lol" and they'd be like "thats okay just pay for it"

and yet i still don't bother to do it, because i'm dumb

Yeah shoplifting is stupid easy - retail stores mostly set up the cameras to spy on the employees. Back in my retail days our security cameras up front only captured behind the register so people used to steal the poo poo out of the displays in the customer line for the registers despite being parallel with the registers.

Short story:

In junior year of high school I went to Walmart with two friends of mine. As we're there, one friend says he's gonna snag a two-month Wow subscription card. So $30 worth of merchandise.

He does so, while my other friend and I look at the board games. No issue arises until we get ready to walk out and two very mall-cop dudes stop us and tell us to empty our pockets. They of course only find the card. They then escort us to the back office (not before trying to confiscate my walking stick) to await an officer. We had to go to court and either do community service or pay like $200. We were "accomplices" to the one guy who snagged it.

Just a heads up, shoplifting ain't always easy. You can get busted even if you don't do it!

When I was young I worked at a grocery store sometimes the secret police loss prevention would try to recruit me to apprehend people with them who were stealing. I'd go stand around at the door or whatever but to their chagrin I never actually got involved. I'm not getting stabbed or punched over 50 bucks of meat or makeup or whatever lol

The main security dude who'd try to get me to help rough up homeless people like that was a real piece of poo poo. He was always telling me he was like 6 months from retirement. I haven't worked there in over 15 years, and he's still there and he looks terrible. Apparently he's been stabbed and run over with a car since I worked with him haha sucker

Not that this is a particularly focused thread at the best of times it's just kind of funny how people take any distraction from Jorpin' Joe whenever they can. :v:
