I know we shouldn't take the Ukrainian numbers at face value but let's assume the 5K number is halved to 2.5k soldiers killed, isn't losing 2.5% of your operational force before you have even conquered a major city a major loss in terms of man power?

yea for comparison, the U.S. lost 2.420 soldiers (and some 19,950 wounded) over the 20 years they spend in Afghanistan. If we go to the more bloody war (for Americans) the U.S. lost 58k in Vietnam over 19 years. 5k or just 2.5k in a week is big for a modern war.

Evening hot air from Moscow.

Unlikely, since the majority of the supplied weaponry, thus far, is shoulder-fired rockets. Infantry is not particularly mobile, and Russian generals are merciless enough to bomb cities indiscriminately eventually.

Really running on fumes here Moscow

Next they will say feeding Ukranians is an act of War against Russia

It's far too early to declare the conventional invasion a failure. The Russian strategy is to encircle key cities and cut off entire chunks of the country from the western half. That's still ongoing. This is going to continue to unfold over weeks.

Apparently Ukraine started the war with around 750 T64s (that's the public best guess, who knows how close to true that is) so even if Russia's claims are accurate it looks like there's still a whole load of armour out there.

I don't think these necessarily seem entirely unbelievable, Ukraine's forces have absolutely been taking a pounding even if they're giving as good (or better) as they get. The fog of war tends to naturally puff up kill counts some due to the difficulty of confirming that a vehicle/installation is really definitely destroyed, so I doubt this is a super conservative "yes we have definitely confirmed all these kills" number, but I don't think they're particularly exaggerated.

Not sure how bad this will escalate due to this happening now.

Good read, thanks for linking.

WE MUST RETURN TO THE DANCE! THE NIGHT IS OURS!

If Russian does "win" and occupy a good chunk Ukraine it's just going to be so easy for partisan groups to operate. All of that captured Russian equipment, uniforms etc on top of the fact that unlike say the middle east, the occupied people look exactly like the occupiers and many of them speak the same language, it's going to be a nightmare for the Russians when it comes to insurgency attacks on their troops. Of course this will likely have the horrible effect of those Russians being a lot more trigger happy around anyone that acts even a little shady.

Let me dog for it, I actually read it on one of the former American General (I think it was a general) military analysts Twitter thread someone linked in here either Saturday or Sunday.

Basically he was saying Russia has smart munitions, but given the cost and what they invest in their military dollar wise they do not have anywhere close to what say the United States has.

He then mentioned how France and Great Britain ran out of smart munitions during the Libya campaign, and speculated that Russia most likely burned through the majority of its smart munitions stocks on the first two days.

I will try and find it.

I had a friend who was hurt at the Boston Marathon bombing, fairly close and while she was hospitalized and had surgeries, she lived, can walk, and had no amputations because the bombers left the bags on the ground and the ground absorbed most of the blast. People next her weren't quite so lucky with injuries.

As always, caveat that a bunch of videos have been misattributed to this war, but jesus christ

There's so much to take in a twelve second video, you could write a whole novel out of it.

Looks like a MT-LBu with specialist equipment on roof, towed by an acquisitioned civilian tractor (notice the white Z markings on both). I'm going to go on a limb and say this is an artillery forward observer vehicle or some other technically valuable vehicle, anyway not just a troop carrier.

Not sure how much a couple of molotovs would have done on the AFV, especially if it was out of fuel. In hindsight the tractor would have been a better target as it would have been easier to disable and then the MT-LBu would have been immobile again. But a valiant attempt anyway, it really must suck for the Russians who don't know what they're doing and why the locals are so angry at them.
