I assume this secures important lines of communication and possibly retreat for UA forces in Kharkov.

But fog of war and I am not a general.

Interesting, if confirmed. 95th UA VDV is an elite unit, and their peacetime base got hosed up by a Kalibr cruise missile earlier yesterday. If I had to speculate myself, this might actually be for the ease of Donetsk frontline forces regrouping or movement - Kharkiv is ways off from there, and has more pressing, local problems, I’d say.

The smoke column is too far away to be seen from the shore, would take a satellite or recon plane to identify the source, just saying that within a similar timeframe the flagship of the Black Sea fleet and a smaller unidentified escort were also seen there.

It's possible they had a stab at another cargo vessel, but I'd have thought by now the only ships anywhere near Odessa would be the Russian squadron.

Sounds unlikely. At this point it could be an escort, could be defensive smoke screen, could be a cook who burned the crew's lunch.

If the Russians actually attempt a contested amphibious landing I do not think it will go well for them actually, but I wouldn't expect the actual warships to get close enough to be in any real danger from anti-tank weapons, or guns on tanks. The landing craft, sure... just not the warships.

I would not expect the warships to take any hits to be honest except from anti-ship missiles, which Ukraine apparently has a few of their own design. Not many, but a few... both things (the small number and being locally designed and manufactured) making it hard to believe they actually hit a Russian warship with one.

The Russian disinformation groups seem to finally be getting their poo poo together. I'm seeing a lot more of it on twitter when I do city name searches or follow quote tweet chains. Lots of accusations that the Ukrainians are using people as human shields, shelling their own cities, and refusing to let foreigners leave cities under fire.

It seems especially intense around Mariupol, which isn't surprising. The Russians really want to capture that city - it would connect their units in Crimea to the ones in Donbas and would cut Ukraine off from the Azov sea - so they're putting it under heavy artillery fire. It's also home to a large Greek population, which Russia is using in their information - accusing the 'Nazi Ukrainians' of refusing to let Greek citizens leave. How they are supposed to leave a city under fire is left as an exercise to the reader.

I mean yes, but if the ship has catastrophically bad damage control it could be burned to a worthless hulk with a lot less effort, think about the USS Bonhomme Richard in 2020, reduced to the wreckers by one alleged arsonist.

A hit from a Bayraktar would start a fire like that, but I don't think a daylight raid by one of them over water is even possible.

Is there any source for this other than the British Foreign Secretary's off the cuff statements? Given the costs of war--this is probably costing Russia tens of billions of dollars each day--and the sanctions I doubt the Russians can afford a ten year war.

This is the Russian Federation not the United States, so even before the sanctions the government would have been very hard pressed to pay for 10 years of war in Ukraine. The entire thing was predicated on the notion that the war would be quick.

Here's a good look at Russian navy's design philosophy. Their ships are packed to the brim with missiles and guns, with the downside that servicing them is cumbersome and if they were hit by a missile there would be hard not to hit something that makes secondary explosions.

depending on how you want to count Donbass, that's an eight year war and counting. While the UK Foreign Secretary is an absolute idiot, I don't think that the statement was "war of this nature at this tempo for 10 years." However, since Truss is a moron, I'm not totally discounting the possibility.
