Tracklist vibe swings wildly but all the tunes are 155 exactly. Pls don't judge my mixing playing these at - 10% or so makes it really strange sounding to mix. Also the tunes still might sound "off" but I think the pioneer master tempo will be better than an audacity tempo change. In face there's a guy who plays Psy Trance that's normally 140 at 122 to mix it in with more progressive stuff and it sounds really good (like objectively cause psy trance is poo poo).

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-fV6nqNr_dHIq83NRo0Aw8rglDQDu2Ib/view?usp=sharing

I started with some modern liquid that I usually play just pitched down but I didn't like the way it sounded so I edited those out and faded in when I got to more experimental tracks closer to the target BPM. If it doesn't have to be Dnb I could make a longer mix of wave/liquid bass stuff that cruises at 155 easy. Was fun thanks for the idea.

This is cool, thanks for sharing. Good selection. There's a lot of jungle being released these days in the 165 range, but slower than that is kind of rare and borderline not-even-jungle anymore. As you and someone else suggested, might as well start looking into juke and faster-paced breakbeat tunes in that range.

You're right that you can hear a bit of time-stretch artifacting that makes some of the rhythms sound sloppy but it's surprisingly not as noticeable as I expected, and only really slurs tracks that already have some odd syncopation going on. The real problem with Pioneer's 'master tempo' (aside from why the gently caress they called it that and not 'pitch lock'), as it's been explained to me by a fellow junglist who's also an accomplished mastering engineer, is that it creates some unpleasant phasing issues even when you're only adjusting by tenths of a percent. I can definitely hear it when pointed out, but to me it's one of those things that's largely negligible in a live setting where it's masked by other things like not being in a perfect room (kinda like those jokers who claim they can tell whether a DJ is spinning 320s or WAVs). To me, the modicum of fidelity loss is significantly less of a problem than clashing musical keys, so 'master tempo' stays on.

RIP. Only having warmed up to MCs more recently, I can't say I knew much of his work. But as a teenager who watched loads of Ali G before ever going to a D&B party, Twist 'Em Out was on heavy rotation. Man was a pioneer, and loads of people in the scene are pouring their hearts out over his loss today.

Not even talking about death since he was super young, but ...

Like you always have this mental image of the folks you idolize and grew up with as you remember them in their prime.

And then you realize when you were growing up with them in your teens they were probably in their 20s and 30s, and now that you're approaching your mid-40s these folks are ... older.

I mean this isn't news, or any sort of profound revelation, but it's one of those things I think about every time I go look up the bio of an artist I love and see that they're in their late 50s or 60s and the only thing that I can say is "... ah"

D&B was always young peoples music because it was so new. It's definitely weird seeing it age and people fall by the wayside.

The first time that really hit was when Prodigy died last year. It’s sad because DJs from my 20’s already started dropping from drugs and that feels lovely in a different way, but when you’re chikdheroes just die because they are like 50+ years old and that’s that… yeah it’s weird.

I really hope to go back to a warehouse party or a festival again at some point in my life, but it will be weird to go and see a very fine delineation between Millennial and Zoomer rave kids.

This sounds great to me. I can't record a mix this week, but I'll get my gear dusted off and drop a mix next Friday. It will be good to get back in a habit.

I'm in for a mix every now and then. Been in a major funk (the bad kind) though, and haven't even listened to new music in months. :(

Virgil Vox

Okay I'll kinda organize this thing, if you want on the list :justpost: or PM me.

"Rules"
- Post mix on First Friday of your month
- Make it at least 30 mins
- Easily streamable/downloadable [soundcloud, mixcloud, google drive, ect...]
- DnB or adjacent (halftime, juke, footwork, clownstep, liquid, neuro, jungle, intelligent, just keep it in the 170ish breakbeat kingdom)
- Any equipment, Ableton to records, doesn't have to be live just share some interesting stuff

If you're not a DJ or are away from your decks a custom youtube playlist would be cool option.

Schedule (In order of requests):

March: Nullification
April: chrix
May: Mister Speaker
June: Dirt Road Junglist
July: Virgil Vox

______________________________________________________

I can jump in as a substitute anytime, I'm on decks like ~12 hours a week.

What do yall think? We can spam the mixes in some other related threads and get this thread a little more action? Plus I wanna hear everyone's take on DnB!

Nice, listened a few times now, and it'll stay on my cars usb for a bit. Lot of tunes I would play but only knew a few of them and added a couple to some wantlists. Very clean sounding and great mixing too. I usually go a little harder at the end but it was cool to hear some chiller stuff there. Thank you!

Looking for some help with a track ID. I'm wondering if I'll have more success asking this in the EDM thread or the Trap thread in RSF, as it's a halftime number that really treads the line between genres. But to me, it's Drum & Bass, so here goes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfRgxJcugSs

It's not this tune but it sounds almost exactly like it. It's a halftime number with a very sparse, empty drop, basically just the kick and snare and a trappy sample like that knocking sound that really defines the tune. Again, it sounds so much like Get Low that when I first heard it, I was like, "whoa that sounds just like Get Low!" I also want to say it's from a similar artist, either someone also on Critical or Forbidden Frequencies or someone adjacent with a similar sound - Kasra, Alix Perez, Hyroglifics, Fracture, Sam Binga, etc. Hell, it may even be another Enei tune.

Tracks that are also similar that might help point in the right direction:
Enei - Crunchy
- Stripped-down drop with similar focus on similar elements. This might be the tune I'm thinking of but I also remember it having a much straighter rhythm than the swing in this one.
Alix Perez & Fracture - Archetype
- Huge tune, similar vibe. Love the use of the Mentasm/Hoover sound and the ostinato onto the knock samples, but again I don't think this is quite it.
