I’m serious, it’s not just my brother in law. I work in computer security and have seen all kinds of damage come from pirating games. Think 6 figure ransomware payments or multi-million dollar crypto thefts from people wanting to play Fart Simulator without paying. Hell, I’ve seen pirated games come with PuTTY configurations that no AV would ever hit on (including Defender) lead to massive losses. Ignore me if you want, but if you are pirating PC games you’re not being as safe as you think you are.

Again, not a moral thing, no one cares. But you’re going to care a lot if something goes wrong.

Make sure you steal as many games as you can as fast as you can. If the installer looks sketch I would recommend installing your stolen game twice.

I'm sorry but those people are also idiots. If you have some basic computer literacy and a little bit of common sense you can pirate everything with no issue. I guarantee those people downloaded or clicked on something that was incredibly obvious .

It was literally pirated games, unequivocally, in all those cases. Like, you can see the chain in Carbon Black of torrent -> game exe -> Internet connection -> trickbot or something else nasty.

Again, ignore me if you want. Maybe we’ll meet someday.

Edit: I have also seen similar things from pornography.

Remember when they finally rereleased Earthbound on the 3DS, but then tried to tell everyone that the original 3DS didn't have hardware capable of playing SNES games?

how would a video file run code to do anything other than open your video player? is that possible?

or are you talking about downloading some kind of torrent with a bunch of weird files in it that people for some reason a) download and b) run?

i'm convinced all these people pirate captain knows are visiting those dodgy websites that are full of DOWNLOAD HERE buttons that actually aren't a real download button. then they're running a 2mb .exe it gives them.

I mean people torrenting, downloading and running games, that’s what I’ve seen. The full game is there, but so are some malicious programs bundled in with it. Usually it’s just a bitcoin miner or small mail client used to send spam but occasionally it’s much worse. I read an article about a proof of concept attack where a researcher found a vulnerability in a video codec and made a file that, in conjunction with the vulnerability, could get arbitrary code to run on a machine, but I’ve never hear of that actually happening in the wild.

What I have seen is attackers naming their malware stuff like porn.avi.exe, and since you can give a file any icon you want, at a glance it looks like a video file. Combine that with, by default, Windows doesn’t display file extensions, and what the end user sees is a file with the right icon labeled porn.avi. Zeus famously spread across networks that way. Pro tip: always enable visible extensions.

If it makes you feel better, 99% of the time they do target rich people or companies.

I promise you, while I’ve seen plenty of that too (far more of it, of course) I have seen serious, serious malware bundled in with actual working copies of games hosted in torrents like any other.

Edit: other than my brother in law, these aren’t people I know, they are clients who have paid me to respond to these incidents.

Never pirated a thing in my life. Not out of moral character, the truth is I have always been really just too lazy to find out how to do it safely and successfully. And I've always managed to have the cash to get what I wanted, that helps.

I’ve heard of that but never encountered it personally. I use iOS, not because I particularly like it but because the closed nature of it makes it more secure. Not that there isn’t malware on iOS because I’ve absolutely seen that too. Just less of it.
