I smashed a bunch of braziers but didn't get anything besides coal. Is it just in the cultist area? Maybe a random drop?

Also some of the hanging curtains give red jute if you break them.

yeah thats what it's looking like for me too. i think in 10 mountains i've found 5 caves (2 in one mountain!) because i'm not great at finding them. then each cave has maybe 2 cultists. it's insane

also bats are easily the most annoying enemy in the game, good thing they do negligible damage

I think the best mountain we had was 6 caves. Then a lot of them had none or just one.

Did find an insane swamp in my solo trek. I didn't map the whole thing yet but

Okay, I give up- how do I disable my mods in Vortex if I wanted to play with vanilla people? I've tried tweaking a bunch of settings and disabling them all inside Vortex still sees them running when I start the game. He's only hard if you don't grab a mace and a potion or poison resist beforehand. And level the ground near his altar. He is very easy unless you are devoted to using a bow exclusively, as many people seemingly are.

Mining bog iron sucks, do not recommend.

But when your nearest empty crypts are a sail and a portage and another sail away, and someone on the server hoovered up 10 full stacks of iron, but someone else didn't get an iron pick before the mountains, it's the only useful option.

E: yeah, we did bonemass twice the other night, the first time I was using the iron sledge which does good damage but is mostly good for clearing adds.

The second I was using a mace - only l2 bronze - and it just shredded him. The first fight lasted more than an in game day and everyone died at least once, the second lasted maybe 5 minutes.

Yeah the whole iron progression thing needs a complete rework because it sucks rear end. At the very least they need to make padded armor use blackmetal instead of iron so that you don't have to go back to swamps to farm even more of it. Aside from that, it would also help if they slightly reduced the weight of iron ore, and made the deposits visible outdoors like with copper and tin.

mastershakeman

Iron wouldn't need a rework if silver veins would break under their own weight. But sadly they require one chunk mined out then the whole thing will pop, so you need the iron pickaxe

I think it took me 7 caves and about 20 cultist kills to get my first trophy. Not enough fenrir hair from that to get max armor either. What a mess

There's also just way fewer caves than there should be, or they're super hard to see. A mountain will have 4 stone outposts, 3 wyvern egg spots, a bunch of cabins and one cave

We really enjoyed the swamps. Much more fun than copper mining and the swamps are full of creatures and it has a unique flavor.

Any advice for mountains? So far I’ve found obsidian and upgraded the workbench, found onion seeds in a chest that are growing in my garden but not ripe yet, and mined a small amount of silver (what I could carry by hand). None of the silver recipes particularly stand out as “get this now” because I’ve got fully upgraded Iron gear. I am a bit worried about the logistics of getting a lot of silver down the mountain too. Seems much harder than the swamp in that regard.

To be fair the game kind of forces that on you. Eikthyr is easy to kill with a bow, The Elder and Moder pretty much require a bow, the plains are incredibly dangerous in melee, and stealth archery is pretty much always viable against common enemies.

Moder is a lot easier if you use a bow while flying and a wolfspear when she lands. There are times when bows are definitely better (Elder, debatable Eikthyr) but a lot of the time it's just a part of the arsenal and trying to force its viability just doesnt work. I found using a bow on the plains to thin enemies out and then using a melee weapon was a lot better than trying to kite forever. I only wish there was a blackmetal spear.

Some people just went to absurd lengths to avoid using a melee weapon and then complained that a boss that was weak to blunt damage was hard. It definitely doesn't force ranged weapons on you, people did that themselves.

E: for awhile the suggestion for Bonemass was to build a nest out of reach and bring 300+ arrows, which...why. I'm not saying bows aren't a useful tool.

A lot of the silver gear is a marginal upgrade especially if you have fully upgraded your iron stuff. I refused to upgrade my armor because gently caress mining that much iron, so a set of wolf armor was very handy. I would get a wolf chest or wolf cape first to avoid the cold penalty or having to chug frost resist potions. Next up is either Frostner or the wolf spear, imo, but I also really like the spear moveset. Good news is not a lot of the silver needs to come off-mountain, most of the silver gear is armor/weapons. I made a forge on-sight and never had to haul more silver off than I could physically carry.

A fuling camp, especially with some starred fulings, is definitely easier if you thin them out with a bow as they come at you. It's probably doable just fine if you just roll up and start hacking, but easier if you don't. But also, yes, I think it's better to switch to melee than just keep running and shooting.

If you've already found silver you're pretty good to go. You can always just put a fire by where you're mining to keep the cold penalty off you but a wolf cape should be something you get right away. You also need silver for the best bow in the game.

I like to excavate all the way around a silver vein then pop the whole thing at once. Doesn't work if it's embedded into a rock though unless you clear the rock too which is a ton more work.

For fighting wolves , run around with a fast weapon and shield. When you hear snarling, get somewhere flat and get your shield up. If you can get a hit in , the wolf usually gets stunned, but a couple of them will attack you very fast. It's really hard to fight them on slopes so if you get spotted at the wrong time I find it useful to backpedal all the way down while blocking.

The only thing I can think silver is used for that isn't gear is for a butchers block for recipes.

I was absolutely awful at melee combat in this game until I went fully into knifes.

The attack speed is so high it stuns many enemies on the second or third swing, generally before the enemy's second swing. Killing wolves became pretty easy once I switched.

This does require you to tank at least one hit, so it's less effective if your armor isn't pretty high.

Try spears. Really. They attack almost as fast and you can use the "throw" attack as a power attack too, which is a ton faster than the knife leap. If you're in range of the standard attack when you throw you'll immediately re-equip it.

I tried them for awhile but had trouble with the tiny hit box. This was pre H&H so they might have fixed it by now.

I might still give them another try for some variety. I'll keep my trusty knife for smashing little stuff like Eric said.

It's been a while since I played also, but I'm 90% sure what you're describing was a mod. I had it too cause I hated trying to line crops up over and over. In vanilla you just harvest the crops and they're gone, you have to manually replant all the seeds afterwards.

Yeah, it was fairly easy fight for us too. I found next boss to be much harder first time, but that was mainly because we ran out of arrows and there were drakes and stone golems popping everywhere (died when boss was at about 1% or less of health and had to fight him again from full health, but it was much easier second time)

Butcher's table for mountain-level food to boost your health before you upgrade your armor, probably. Otherwise I usually upgrade weapons/shield first + frost resistance armor in mountains is fairly important

being able to punch it in order to harvest everything grown in the area saves a lot of time, and the customizable radius means that you can make sure you're efficiently using space. It does tend to plop things in as it searches for space to plant them so everything doesnt grow at once but its usually quick enough that it doesnt effect it too much in the long run.

EDIT: one important caveat is that is does seem to plant things so long as you're in proximity to it so be mindful not to go too far until everything you want is at least in the ground lol
