New cases soar to fresh high of over 340,000 amid omicron wave

Omicron now accounts for 99.96% of COVID-19 cases in S. Korea

The detection rate for the BA.2 subvariant of Omicron — sometimes called “stealth Omicron” — increased to 22.9%.

Will surging “stealth Omicron” cases affect Korea’s current COVID-19 wave?

Yeah, it's going to get the baton handed off to it with olympic precision.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, 15,337 students in Seoul were newly confirmed to have COVID-19 between Feb. 28 and Thursday, while 1,417 school faculty members in Seoul were also confirmed.

The tally has been on a steep rise.

On the first of the new school year, 158,171 students in Korea could not attend classes due to isolation or confirmation of COVID-19.

According to the union, one middle school has six teachers running online classes though they were confirmed to have COVID-19, as the school had not been able to hire substitute teachers.

Eh, I'm guessing no. BA2 has been here for weeks and weeks. Its prevalence is rising but cases and hospitalizations continue to fall, and deaths are tailing off too (but at a much slower rate of decline, area under the curve is bigly). I don't think BA2 is a national concern in the immediate future. The U.S. is going to coast on the immune aftermath of BA1 until that starts fading out, uneducated guess would be somewhere mid-year for that. So a wave in the summer is definitely on the table, I'd say, and certainly by August I think conditions will be ripe for another major wave, but I'm not counting on a big spring wave unless a new variant with a whole different set of immune-evasion mutations pops up.

Why even bother? Biden won't listen to them and neither will the public.
The people who care about COVID and try to avoid it and haven't yet realized that listening to the CDC is insane are, I would imagine, a statistically insignificant portion of the population. A minority of a minority. The government has declared COVID is over and will not listen to eggheads saying otherwise, and the same is true for the majority of the American people.

Middle.

Distilled water doesn’t damage the layer permanently. When electrolytes are present, however, those give the electrostatic charge a path to dissipate, and efficacy is permanently degraded.

How much is it degraded? Great question. This is one of those things where it sure would be cool to have specific studies on it, but we have to settle for guessing from adjacent data that is available. Personally, I don’t worry about a wet respirator within a session, but I do discard any that have gotten moist. It’s not worth saving a buck fifty in my budget.

Here’s a study involving exercise under hot and moderately humid conditions. Of note, they used Auras (albeit the surgical model). Fit factor was degraded by an hour of exercise, but it may have been due to mechanical and seal effects, like the respirator slipping around on a sweaty face and/or deforming more easily when warm and wet.

The P100 respirator used was the 3M 8293.

Side note: See all those entries that aren’t “200+”? Yeah, that’s respirator protection being measurably imperfect against the test ærosol. Sorry. It happens. But really, no one ever scoring below twenty‐two in an Aura is a good result.

And look at the P100. If we can write off subject 1,2, 3 as poor fits for this respirator and subject 7’s post‐exercise result as an avoidable first‐time user error, all remaining scores are above one hundred. A ninety‐nine percent reduction of the test ærosol is pretty drat good. That’s like taking two years of exposure to rack up a week without, and this is under particularly challenging conditions.

lol wore the bane mask filter/cartridge out to the community grills to make burger patties for tonight's dinner and i swear this thing sets off people less than the envos, they seem to avoid looking at me instead of staring lol.

so far im surprised at how comfortable it is for what it is, though of course it is a new and exciting way to irritate my nose bridge but everything else does too. it also doesn't have that mask musk that even envos have, i think that's the best part. of course i only wore it for like 30 minutes but it wasn't building up at all, and it was even slightly chilly out.

Long COVID Mini-Series: Burden

Long COVID Mini-Series: The Heart

The first one is… actually a decent read. It’s incredible that person can write this and still be so blasé about opening ’er up.

But I do want to point out a bit of idiocy.

quote:

We have SARS-CoV-2 doors (called ACE2 receptors) on almost all of our organs

We have ACE2 itself, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, on our cells.

In the context of virology, ACE2 plays the role of the receptor of SARS‐CoV‐2, as well as SARS-CoV and NL63.

It’s a bit pedantic to correct a comedy forum poster or a journalist on this one, but how does a medical professional make it?

It’s like saying that our houses have “window receptors” because burglars can throw rocks through them.

Moving on, to the article on the heart.

She puts some sobering studies in simple terms, which is good.

Nevertheless, she ends with this:

quote:

Impact of vaccination

It’s important to note that this study included people who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 between March 1, 2020 and January 15, 2021. This means vaccines were not readily available for the general public at time of infection. Thankfully, we’ve seen a number of scientific studies show vaccination reduces long COVID19 by 40-50%. We haven’t seen the evidence for the positive role of vaccines on long COVID heart health specifically. But given that vaccines reduce the likelihood of infection and hospitalization, I’m optimistic that negative heart outcomes are significantly reduced, too.

Bottom line

Although relatively rare, SARS-CoV-2’s long-term impact on the heart can be detrimental even among previously healthy individuals and among those with mild COVID19 disease. Vaccination continues to be our best bet to reduce the chances of disease, like the impact on the heart.

It sounds to me like optimism continues to be our best bet to reduce the chances of disease OPEN ’ER UP!
