I've been thinking of posting Stand Still, Stay Silent. I haven't followed it in a few years, but that's mostly 'cause life got in the way, not because I lost interest, so it would be kinda fun going in blind on the second half. Though I am also aware that the author had a bizarre conversion to christianity a little while back and I have no idea how that may have affected the comic, so that's something to keep in mind. It also wrapped up earlier this year, though there are still epilogue pages being posted from time to time

I might start later today once I've sorted out a few other things

I don't think it affected the comic... Or maybe it did, but didn't the creator of that have some kind of a massive emotional breakdown from people pointing out that some of the stuff in their comic was problematic and then they became a psycho-Christian fundamentalist?

Both of these things did happen though I don't know if they were related. I stopped reading it after the latter happened so I dunno what happened to the comic since.

It feels kinda fitting given both of them are so used to the specific brand of bullshit the comic is built around. One does get the vibes that Bianca has been through the same kinda poo poo that the titular Hitmen have dealt with in the course of their employment.

Also keep in mind that compared to Anette and Maythorn, Bianca spent an extra two years of her life doing this kind of poo poo because she was trapped in the little dome world where time passes faster, as the Snake Woman. She’s considerably hardened after that for the rest of the comic.

So, I have continued to keep up with this person's twitter thread following Sinfest. Possibly because its car-crash interesting, possibly because I have a very weird masochistic urge.

Its honestly fascinating. This is a 20+ year daily comic put out by someone clearly trying to use it work through their own feelings/politics/identity.

The "Swerve into SWERF" era happens around 2011 and is telegraphed years earlier by both the general changes to the main female character Monique (lesbian arc, less T&A) and a few arcs about male characters being regretful porn addicts.

2010-2012 was, in my memory, a pretty low point for internet feminism. LF feminism threads were basically full of incredibly petty and, frankly, dumb takes like "Manspreading: Threat, or Menace?", "Its unethical for men to go to the gym", "You're not a feminist unless you're willing to permanently give up having sex with men", "If you get mad that someone brought a screaming baby into a movie theater, thats misogyny", and, my favorite, "Men shouldn't stretch in public". My understanding is that Tumblr was even worse.

Tatsuya getting exposed to Radfem at this point and picking up a particularly misandrist strain (no really, actual misandry, men in the comic are very consistently depicted as permanently irredeemable, and later on as straight up not human) kinda makes sense.

In contrast, the "Trainwreck of TERF-ery" era just loving pops up out of nowhere and takes over the whole comic. In 2011-2018 there are characters depicted as anywhere between genderfluid and just straight up trans, and while its often clumsy (and occasionally fetish-y) its never negative. Criticism of a genderfluid/transfem character only comes from a dude who is literally the high priest of toxic masculinity.

In 2019 the comic just becomes all TERF poo poo, all the time, all at once. The art and coherency had been slowly degrading for a while, but both just kinda fall off entirely around here. The comic becomes really hard to parse even if you're familiar with it, and utterly incomprehensible if you're not.

Sinfest is a compelling case for the whole "older genx and boomers all have lead poisoning" argument. You can literally watch an artist spiral into mental decay, cyclical thinking, and conspiritorial delusions, documented daily.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The radfem-to-terf pipeline makes a lot more sense given both are built around gender essentialism. There was a strain of very immature 'girls room, boys drool' feminism that gone unexamined ends up going to some pretty terrible places.

Like I said, pretty sure there's a point- probably the 2019 one?- where you can tell the author got on Twitter, and it broke what was left of his brain for good.

I'm guessing he logged on and immediately got criticized for the SWERF poo poo a bunch by internet folks because overnight the concept of "woke" in the comic goes from being objectively good resistance to patriarchy to representing evil gender-pill-pushers.

Zulily Zoetrope

Yeah, there's a couple more steps in that pipeline, all of which appear in Sinfest. You start out as an "ironic" sexist dudebro kind of guy, and somewhere you pick up the idea that women are cool now and it's time to be a feminist, but you don't care enough to learn what's wrong with your view of women and just parrot whatever talking points you pick up by osmosis. Commonly known as the "Male Feminist." The key step here is that doing a half-assed job of it impresses no one, except for the radfems by the time you start spouting gender essentialism, and when you take the plunge into outright SWERF and TERF land, you'll suddenly have a circle of people all telling each other that they're the real feminists and the feminists who criticized you in the past are the regressive ones.

There's also a final step, and I guess maybe the read-along hasn't gotten there, but in the last couple weeks he has taken the next step from TERF and anti-vax nonsense and started introducing vague allusions to bankers being the real villains, complete with the Star of David joining the gallery of evil symbols.

My guess is that Fusk is holding Rosendal out the window counting on Bianca not being willing to shoot him when it'd cause him to drop Rosendal -- either out of concern for killing a third-party, or that "looking like you killed two agents of Destiny" is basically a death sentence. Maybe?

Anyway yeah, I've read webcomics for long enough that I expect good ones to stop posting randomly, but I also expect long-dead comics to randomly start posting again. One day, the author will be in another phase-change of their career, and decide to work some more on that thing they've had on the back of their mind for ages. Or maybe they won't! It's why RSS is the only reasonable way to follow webcomics.

Opploplis is a great example, which just started up again after six years of the author saying "hey almost nobody liked this and I'm doing other stuff now, don't hold your breath for the next chapter." Eventually he reached a point where he said "whatever I'll try to finish it just to have it done." Its type of defiantly-inscrutable plot machinations are entirely my jam btw, but I don't know if it's a good fit for this thread. I might post Nine Planets Without Intelligent Life someday though: his and his brother's previous webcomic from 2003-2011. Another comic which died and revived several times iirc, it would be an exercise of intense nostalgia and possibly grief as I discover whether this thing I vaguely remember was actually good.
