One week from today, March 15th at 8:00AM PT, RiffTrax will be making a BIG announcement right here on this Kickstarter campaign. It's something that we've been working on for a long time, and is truly unlike anything we have ever done before.
While it's not another movie being added to this year's RiffTrax Live calendar, it is something that will involve you, dear Kickstarter backers — and we think you will be very excited to see it.
Stay tuned!!!

So last night The Mads (Trace and Frank) did their own riff of The Devil's Hand which is one the Rifftrax crew did ages ago. It's such a weird movie where the lead is just some rando who gets recruited by a devil cult which doesn't seem to ask anything of him so it isn't clear what anyone is getting out of it.

And it's obvious from the first meeting that most of it is fake anyway (the foot pedals controlling the chandelier of death). Good riff, though.

In more generic bad movie releases this week is the second Max Havoc movie. For some reason the movie decides to just make up a bunch of stuff about Seattle to justify its story.

The folks who already enjoy Jackbox and What The Dub. It looks like a great license use for a party game and I appreciate having the main three in there for prewritten lines.

I quite enjoyed the famed Tudor architecture of Olde Towne Seattle (founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1600).

They were absolutely squatting some other movie set for, like, a historical drama about the War of the Roses or something. Baffling that they would try to turn that into Seattle of all places, but fair play, Americans basically do the same thing to any non-US city, let the Canucks have a go at us.

I think the movie was supposed to be set in a more tropical local but whatever location they were going to shoot at to fake it fell through and so they just kind of half assed it by picking a city that would kind of fit what they had.

That dude is weird. He claims to be some sort of authority on bad movies. His twitter bio says he wrote a book about them.

He clearly misses the point of MST3k/Rifftrax. They love bad movies and a lot of the riffing is done with some sort of love and appreciation.

Hell, MST3K and by extension Rifftrax, is a HUGE reason why people today loving love bad movies. I think without them keeping that love for bad movies alive you wouldn't have all these boutique labels restoring and releasing those types of movies.

This is just the genre of guy that's mad if someone popularizes a particular B movie because he wants knowing about that particular B movie to be some sort of personality capital, except he's turned this into an entire profession.

It did not go well for him.

I just cracked up at 'cover me in doilies and read me Ann Landers' which is a line I'd never particularly noticed before. Good times.

Edit: Watching the posted clip, it's funny the guy talking with Mike and MJ says "Do all movies!" and Mike is like "We want to but can't afford them" but two decades (ew) later they're doing stuff like Jaws and Casablanca.

At the second Conventio-Con, Mike was dismissive of it just as a concept, specifically citing 'It's a Wonderful Life' as an example ("What are we going to say, 'oh, ha ha, he hit the sore ear!'"), and three decades later they did exactly that movie (albeit just the weird truncated public-domain edit)

If we're being honest I think Mike was talking about the stuff they'd do in that big movie trailer special because I'm pretty sure they saw a lot of funny stuff in, say, Titanic. (And the JtJ for Titanic was pretty great.)

I was originally expecting these streams to be like what the Mads are doing, regular riffing on some kind of movie, but they're more like hangouts with Mary Jo while she watches a movie and makes some jokes.
Then she has also had some one-off streams like that Partridge Family book club show where she got people to read Partridge Family books and talk about them which was funny and weird.
I'm not sure what the end goal is since they've all been free so far, it's only merchandise and downloads of previous streams that cost anything. Maybe she's working on building an audience before doing paid shows?

This (the 2nd Conventio-Con) was just before the Sci-Fi era (in fact it was even where they announced that SFC had picked up MST3K after Comedy Central cancelled), so at least a year before the first Summer Blockbuster Review.

To be fair though I think the question was actually phrased as "would you ever riff a good movie," and opinions of whether Titanic or especially Batman & Robin are good movies are very much up in the air.

One of the Riffers said they could riff a movie like Schindler's LIst or The Passion of the Christ, but would you really want them to.

Ah I forgot about that part of the answer, the 'sore ear' part was what stuck out the most. (As well as what happened after some dorkus malorkus asked if Bridget was single)

I would say the dividing line might be where the movie depicts a real tragedy that affected real people, but they did go after Titanic. But on the other other hand, the movie left itself wide open for dark humor with the part where some guy's head clangs against the propeller, so

They could be doing it for fun, or just to stay in shape. I imagine they are not performing live as often these days.

e: or you mean why in MJ case you pay for the merch, while with the Mads you pay for the episodes? idk, was pondering that myself
