If it was in the desert, it might have been the training grounds at Camp Wilson (which is a part of the Marine base 29 Palms in the Mojave, adjacent to Joshua Tree). They have (had?) an entire place we called cardboard city with like over a thousand actors and stuff set up to look like an entire middle-east town.

TVs are so cheap these days that it's better to pad your car with TVs than bumpers.

Don't worry, it's a Hisense, chances are the TV is already broken.

I dealt with this several times during my short stint working in Walmart electronics. I would never do this, but I have unboxed more than 1 tv in a parking lot to get it to fit in a sedan. There's a Home Depot a block away from my Walmart and you can rent a pickup from there for $20 in town. Granted, this is a Hisense, so that extra $20 might be a considerable expense added on to the tv.

You can't rent a truck from the hardware store unless you're buying poo poo from the hardware store. At least, that's what my local Lowes said

Some guy who had no idea what he was doing started building a house but only ever finished the basement, which was this rambling warren of interconnected rooms that he and his family then lived in for a couple decades. My uncle is a contractor and house builder so he fixed up the basement and has been working on his house for like 20 years now. It's well made but exactly as weird and rambling as the basement.

U-Haul and the like are also like $20 a day for a pickup truck, and they usually stash them all over town, not just at their big depot so it's not much of an inconvenience.

This led me down the rabbit hole of finding other military training facilities out in the desert. I looked at Fort Irwin in California and came across some pretty funny Google reviews of stuff. We last reported on the case in 2018, when Phillip Numrich, owner of Burien-headquartered Alki Construction LLC, became what the state described at the time as ““the first … Washington employer (who) has faced felony charges for a workplace fatality.” He was charged with manslaughter. Earlier this year, in a plea agreement, Numrich pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of attempted reckless endangerment, a gross misdemeanor. The charge carried a maximum sentence of three months in jail; prosecutors agreed to recommend one month. The court file for this afternoon’s hearing includes this letter from state Labor and Industries supporting jail time, which L&I called unprecedented, detailing what its investigation found:
