Russian misinfo propaganda has heavily appealed to that sort of psychology over the years (aimed at both the left and right naturally).
A number of these people are having their brains broken because of how much Russia has just absolutely showed their entire rear end in this conflict, and they've spent years heavily invested in imagining Russia as not exactly what it is.
The less crazy are probably finding themselves coming back down to earth, and the real lost causes are doubling down.

I wonder if something similar is happening in the western right wing between old school righties who are super ready to punch the Ruskie menace, and the new populist right Cawthorne/Carlson/Orban nazis. To the contrarian right... well Russia's rear end is kinda what they thought it was. They just might not be able to mesh with other right wingers wanting to ride cruise missiles into Putin.

Yeah I know tons of otherwise non-tankie lefts that are all over the place on the spectrum of support for Ukraine/Russia. Mostly it's just "actually both the US and Russia are bad" (ukraine is the US now??) but sometimes it's "Russia actually started way fewer wars than the US in the last decades so actually support for Russia is good because the world is doomed in a unipolar US dominated situation"

Or they'll say they support the PEOPLE of Ukraine, but not the horrible nazi government/state of Ukraine. They also buy into the idea that the only reason Ukrainians are fighting against the odds against Russia is that "the west" has a gun to their back forcing them to fight. They absolutely can't fathom people simply fighting to defend their homes because all countries are actually bad and all sides of any war are always equally bad.

A lot of lefts view all nations as this tweet basically

Everyone on the left ought to be keenly aware of the power of nationalism. It’s driven two world wars, and worked as a tool of the ruling class to keep internationalism and class consciousness in check, and as a justification for imperialism.

In other words, nationalism is powerful and like any tool can be harnessed for good or bad; however, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that a country that has been invaded by their neighbors who has designs to erase their nation from the Earth become highly motivated using a core of national identity to resist the people who are killing the friends, family, and neighbors.

If they are issuing the cert they can get the private key, this is how you do TLS decryption in networks or Man in the Middle attacks on TLS.

Even more, because these certs are only 'trusted' by the specific Russian browsers, users on Chrome, Firefox, IE, Edge won't know because they'll just have to assume all certs on .ru sites that expire are valid even if warned they are not unless they use the Russian specific browers.

Yes this is completely rational and believable. The United States wants to launch a biological attack on Russia, a country that is clearly a second rate ‘power’ at this point, using migratory birds.

And, of course, the research leading up to this attack was done not in the United States, but in Ukraine—a country that borders Russia, has a large Russian population, and that the United States has been saying Russia is going to invade for two months.

Of course the United States did this, then sent some NATO reps to Ukraine with decade old laptops with NATO stickers on them, while not bothering to cover their tracks prior to Russian tanks arriving.

Who exactly are they trying to convince?
