Here's some Star Wars playing cards.

https://russgray.net/star-wars-x-theory-11

The packaging is beautiful, the theming is a little weird. Odd to have one box "light side" and another "dark side", since you could kinda just integrate that theme into the cards themselves if that's what you want to do. There's another version that's weirdly more direct.

The cards themselves aren't that great, and there's not like any thematic link between the face cards of each suit. Jokers are droids, aces are ships (the aces look really cool to me at least). I wonder if any novelty playing cards use their own symbols instead of the classic suits, but it probably wouldn't work with Star Wars because they keep trying to treat the "Republic" and "Empire" symbols like they're distinct from eachother.

They also did some Mandalorian cards, which I like the box less, but I like the face cards more. The hearts are even like the main "team" of the show.

To be fair, the Empire and to a lesser extent the FO have way better costuming and cooler symbols & gear which makes it attractive to RP/LARP them.

The ad has a powerful "Karen calls the cops like customer service" energy to it though so not sure why Marketing thought that was a good idea.

Yeah I find the whole "can you believe how many irl fascists love Darth Vader" stuff kinda overblown. TIE fighters, red lightsabers, cool helmets, shooting lightning, you can bet your rear end I'm going dark side in any star war video game.

It's also pretty accurate, irl fascists do love form over function. Nazis took WW1 uniforms and made them less functional but cooler, italian bersaglieri wore peacock feathers into battle, that USMC commercial where a guy swordfights a balrog, that VDV commercial with martial arts moves and backflips...

I understand the appeal of dressing up as Darth Vader or stormtroopers or tie pilots and why they're iconic even if I have some misgivings in the back of my head, but dressing up as an imperial officer just looks lame and isn't iconic at all on top of the space fascist thing.

I guess cheaper to make a cloth hat and a black suit than a suit of armor or a helmet.

yes if they were flying TIE fighters or fighting with red lightsabers sure but they are in boring clothes roleplaying as ICE agents, it’s not comparable

Burger King, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell got the exclusive deal for episode I toys.

IIRC BK was all Tattooine-themed, and the other two had Naboo and Coruscant.

e: wait no this is a Taco Bell ad so they must have got Tattooine.

e2: I think at some point Yum brand went hard on buying licensed toys to compete with Happy Meals. They also got Lord of the Rings toys- I got whatever the Taco Bell happy meal was called and got loving Celeborn. The nerd with two lines who wears a dress, just the character every kid wants a figure of.

Taco Bell definitely had Tatooine because I stole an advertisement with Watto on it from Taco Bell. I think I still have it somewhere.

I think KFC of all places had Naboo. I have strong memories of going somewhere we didn't uusually go because my friend was really pissed off because they were out of the Star Wars toys, and they gave him a lovely penguin instead. Then again it could have been Burger King because we never ate at Burger King either.

The Episode I fast food deal in the US was Tatooine at Taco Bell, Naboo at KFC and Coruscant at Pizza Hut. At the time Yum Brands had only spun off from PepsiCo like a year or two earlier, which probably facilitated the deal when Lucasfilm was hammering out the licensing deals with partners.

I don't think Attack of the Clones had any fast food tie-in, but Burger King had Revenge of the Sith merch (and clearly hedged their bets by having Original Trilogy characters/designs represented in the toys and stuff.)

I hunted those down for the entire summer of 1999 and would empty them by making pinholes in the bottom of the can to let them slowly drain into a glass. Then like three years later before I went to college I was cleaning out my room and said "Why do I have a box full of trash tucked away like a hoarder" and chucked them in the recycling.

Maybe the funniest aspect of the whole thing was that they rolled out over the course of the summer in order, so in April of 1999 you were chugging Dew from a can with a badass Darth Maul on it, the promise of new Star Wars and a fun summer ahead of you. Then as August rolled around, memories of a disappointing movie in your head and that end-of-summer melancholy setting in, you sadly sipped from a can with a picture of Ric Olie, some middle aged bloke who looked as confused as you why he was now the temporary face of Mountain Dew.

Ngl he was one of my favourite action figures. The old timey WW1 pilot look is cool, and he be getaway pilot while Luke and Jango fought Darth Maul. He only got to fly thé episode 2 changeling speeder and Luke’s landspeeder tho. Couldn’t afford big ships :(

The Pizza Hut Star Wars promos in the 90s absolutely loving ripped. I fondly remember a babysitter taking me there and getting a personal pizza and being rewarded with a giant ANH poster with 3P0 and R2 on the front and the complete script from the garbage masher scene on the back.

First off, the Taco Bell Chihuahua would NEVER request The Dark Side. Anyhow, thought maybe that could've been part of TB's Special Edition tie-ins, but looks like the campaign didn't start until later '97.

All I could find was the ad where he implied he's a bigger hero than any Jedi:

And the one where he teamed up with Colonel Sanders and the very famous "Pizza Hut Girl"
