Yeah, Climate change is a thing that will make things more difficult Societally speaking, on the millenia scale, things are more or less as they have always been. Maybe in 50 years we'll have people displaced from places due to sea levels and so on, but we also saw that around the time of the ice age, and several times in between for various reasons, war, disease, famine. How many people fled Europe around the time of the black death? Like yeah, sure, the ocean will probably be dead by the time I (if I live until I) am 90 years old. As an asthmatic with lung injuries from ventilation as a newborn, I am likely to need a breathing apparatus (actually, I kind of already need one due to covid and the general city pollution bullshit) Things are going to get worse in like 25 years, but right now they are not drastically more worse than they were 100 years ago, 200 years ago, 500 years ago, or 1500 years ago, when my people were being slaughtered and ran out by the englisc ængli population.

They will transfer their consciousness to self replicating machines and transcend any need for planets. The idea of faster than light spaceships that actually have biological beings inside them is very naive. Ok but here's the thing. 1. They recently re-ran the Drake equation with some adjustments and modern numbers and found out the original result was crap and the new equation describes more or less what we see 2. Issac Arthur, who is a trained physicist, has a video where he goes over the numbers and essentially our solar system can sustain and keep life in O'Neil cylinders until we reach around a googleplex humans, probably more with better space savings and hollowing out planets and expanding into the oort cloud. And even then there would be a fuckload of space. The thing about this popsci bullshit is that when you actually run the numbers it is all just a lot of conjecture that turns out to be nonsensical in context of our actual, factual knowledge.

UPHO: Futurists suck rear end because it's all conjecture ad reasonable supposition but literally almost none of the futurists throughout human history have been at all close to being correct, even the more pessimistic. One of the reasons is because as a fact of life, any new technology has an amazing downside that hinders its ability to act in the way that we thought it could before we had it. So all of this AI, space flight, etc. bullshit by self-proclaimed pop sci futurists not only mostly doesn't hold when you run the numbers, but just doesn't stand up on closer inspection when looking at how people thought technology would work in the past. These are fun pages. Takes about three seconds to scroll past. There are quite a few very popular opinions being shared that happen to be at odds with other popular opinions focusing on different aspects of the same problem. People need to chill and go for a walk or something. Clearly brains are failing to function as the winter weather wanes. (Southern hemisphereists excepted.) At least that's my opinion.

Futurism is absolutely a joke profession and when scrutinised breaks down into either a) Well applying common sense to modern tech it would sorta look like... b) Absurdly generalistic number crunching based on things like estimated total kgs of water ice in the solar system In summary:

My favorite failed futurism is all the media that thought people in the future would need violent spectacles to be distracted and entertained. Like Running Man or Death Race or Roller Ball. Turns out we just want cheap rear end drama like dancing shows or cooking shows. Or just regular people locked up in a house. Less silly though, is that we may be heading into a post antibiotic era as bug resistances to existing antibiotics rise and fewer new antibiotics are found. Antibiotic custodianship is becoming important and the thought of people dying from 'minor' infections again is scary.

RIP to the people who die in car crashes today because an hour of sleep has been arbitrarily cancelled. 9-5 computer touchers will say "I like the sun being out when I get off" while ignoring it's down when I get off and up when I need to sleep, as is traditional. The Witcher TV show is bad. The writing is on the level of a generic YA novel. The visual effects are lovely. The voice Henry Cavill puts on sounds dumb as gently caress. The action scenes are boring and pointless. The episodes are way too long and the narrative is unnecessarily drawn out, seemingly to fill time. Scenes are often very poorly lit so you can't see anything (probably to disguise how bad it looks). It's far from the worst thing I've watched. I watched three episodes and I feel like I could watch all the rest or not and it would make absolutely no difference to me. I wouldn't object to seeing more of it, but there's no reason for me ever to seek it out. Nothing about it is offensively bad. It's just completely unremarkable in every way and does nothing to justify its own existence.
