So, years after my group moved over to Dropfleet, I've got a couple of buddies interested in playing Dropzone, so I've been reading the new rules / statcards.

Am I right in thinking that some units are just... Missing? Like, I'm a PHR player, and Hyperions, Enyos, Dianas, Triton-Xs and probably more I'm not remembering aren't in either the stat cards or the army builder on the website.

EDIT: Which is especially odd as Dianas are the newest unit in the army.

Hyperion/Enyo are covered as the Odin Heavy Walker I think now, the Diana is in the army builder under Standard units, and I see Triton Light Troopship/Dropship under Auxillary/Transports section.

The units that were all variants on the same chassis got rolled into one for the sake of reducing SKUs or whatever. So if you want a Hyperion, you pick an Odin and replace the railguns with a laser.

It's TTC, so you need to know the stat cards linked from the builder site are the wrong version and don't have any of the latest releases in them. For those, you need the links from their store site. You missed The Great Renaming last year where they renamed some things for no good reason. PHR and Resistance got hit the hardest by it.

Really.

Over at the storefront, https://ttcombat.com/pages/dropzone-commander-resources links to the UCM stat cards https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0965/1274/files/UCM_Stat_Cards_4b7b6b31-3c76-4646-865e-83e2f521c21c.pdf?v=1645630499 which DO have the Polecat.

Meanwhile in space, the storefront resource page has the rules and some sheets for newer ships but nothing like the cards for DZC, and the builder is sporting some dead easy to fix but significant typos that have been there for years now in some cases.

* Admiral values are incorrect for Heavy ships. See: https://www.reddit.com/r/DropfleetCommander/comments/q8rtzo/for_anyone_else_baffled_by_admiral_points_recently/
* Lysander doesn't have its 'Stealth Observation' rule in the builder at all.
* Shaltari Bombers are 15" Thrust and Fighters are +4 PD in the current digital rulebook, but the builder has them respectively at 12" Thrust and +5PD. I honestly can't tell which are supposed to be correct.
* Istanbul is supposed to be Thrust 4" instead of 6"

This is all par for the course for TTC. Just a baseline of incompetence and neglect.

The best one is the Resistance helicopters. The Typhoon got renamed to a Cyclone, and a Cyclone is now a Cyclone with Missiles.

All because some graphic designer got their panties in a wad over the layout of the builder looking too cluttered.

I have the lingering suspicion that there is still some internal weirdness going on left over from the Hawk takeover. It feels a bit like Dave is responsible for and does a list of jobs remotely, then 'somebody' is meant to pick it up and do these other steps at TT HQ. Only that 'somebody' is probably an ever changing group of people who all have other jobs.

Carnevale seems more consistent and I suspect that is because the boss man Lewis is keeping a closer eye on it. And so the staff reporting to him probably are as well.

And from the way the army builders keep going down they seem to have an IT infrastructure issue. That needs fixing, you can't tell everyone that all the stats are online and keep having outages.

They've stated it plain that Dave is working remotely, and all he does is CAD and blurbs for new models. All the game design is primarily Lewis Clarke, but he's also the lead on every single game. Other people suggest ideas, but he's the final arbiter.

Lewis did a few interviews last year, and you could hear his voice and demeanor change between DZC and Carnevale. He loves Carnevale and Rumbleslam he gets excited about them and wants to dive into details and process, they're his bio-kids. DZC/DFC are his step kids. In particular, he talked about the big database he meticulously maintains for Carnevale units. Meanwhile, DZC gets a couple typos fixed every lunar year.

They lost their web guy just before the big unit stat change and renaming last year, and since then they've gone through a series of essentially web-interns. They can make a pretty UI, but they struggle with basic stuff like databases, dev environments, server maintenance and the like.

Put your arms around me,
fiddly digits, itchy britches
I love you all
I was sitting in my office this morning when I heard a weird clicking sound coming from the corner. My office is adjacent to the semi-outdoor kitchen we have and I only just cleared out a rat infestation, and I have found rats in the office before, so I feared the worst. There's a stack of cardboard boxes I keep there, mostly the boxes my computer components came in and one or two that I use to transport armies for when I go to the game store. I was terrified I was going to find a rat, but I had to look regardless.

I did not find a rat.

Instead, I found a termite hive.

I then began to carefully go through the boxes to see if there was anything worth keeping - manuals, warranties, extra components, etc - when I came across a Glenlivet gift box. This was utterly baffling. Why would I have held onto this?

I opened that up to see if there was anything inside of it that I might need. See, in December of 2020 I moved houses and I accidentally threw away my PHR fleet. I learned a valuable lesson: open every box before tossing it, even when they are potentially full of termites.

So, I flipped open this Glenlivet box and found something unexpected:

It's been a weird morning, a mix of disgust and wonder. If only I had thought to go through this box a year and a half ago.

On the plus side, I now have 4 Resistance Grand Cruisers and am basically a frigate box away from a functional fleet.

I also learned that termite hives make noise, so there's that.

I have to admit it was unexpected. I wrote them off a long time ago and had fully replaced the fleet. Now, I have more PHR than I know what to do with. The one real win though is that I have a battlecruiser again. Since I bought everything piecemeal, I didn't get the Fleet box and so ended up with two battleships I got on the cheap through Facebook. With two battleships and a battlecruiser, I can field a pretty heavy force. Otherwise I have about 4 each of the original frigates and four or so varieties of cruiser and a couple of different heavy cruisers, plus a pile of Echoes.

At that point I'd be tempted to max out on Calypso and the escort monitor to make those murder machines as tough to kill as possible. Throw in the target spotting lighters and annoy your friends.

Speaking of PHR, I'm thinking of dipping my toes into Dropfleet by grabbing the PHR fleet starter. Anybody know any next steps after that? I'm not super keen on dropping ~£100 on a bunch of plastic all in one go, so any methods for slow building things would be appreciated.

A second starter.

PHR strengths are in their core cruisers and frigates.

Corvettes are mandatory for just about everyone except PHR; either bring light calibre high shot count cruisers, or Echo corvettes, or Jason destroyers, one of the three options for hunting strike carriers once they get into atmo.

The Pollux monitor has great synergy with your bomber carriers like the Bellerephon heavy cruiser or Priam battlecruiser.

So any of those three packs is a good place to expand, if you don't just get a second starter.

Echo Corvettes are a solid and simple choice I think. Destroyers might be good for more troop drop and if you are happy to magnetise then are multi-purpose.

A second starter is a very good choice but I assume you'd probably prefer not to double down immediately.

I'd probably leave battleships until you've got that second starter set as you likely won't use them at low points levels.

Alright. Would you just build the stuff in Starter 1 as the stuff on the box or is there a better/more beginner friendly configuration to be made? I'm probably not gonna mess with magnetising things too much since I don't have the patience.

2 Medea, basically mandatory ships

Ether 2 Calypso or 2 Europa. You'll eventually want at least 2 Calypso, but you don't have to start out with them.

1 Orpheus, you'll need a bulk lander of some kind, and it's easily one of the best in the game.

1 Bellerephon, to cover launch and burnthrough and because it's one of the most well designed ships in the entire game

Last cruiser either an Orion, Ajax or Theseus for the generalist role.

The box and insert have you building a Hector, which is a terrible ship you should not build, and an Ikarus which is fine but. But the Bellerephon is better at each of those ships roles than either.

The best most up to date PHR ship guide I know of is http://thetacklezone.net/guides/phr-ship-overview/. Its only slightly out of date, missing the newest battlecruisers (Agrippa & Pompeius), the lighter (Harpocrates), and the brand new cutters (Pegasus & Ourania)

Final followup on the Table War blue mat. Two weeks ago, I found an eBay auction for one of the mats, and the guy selling it's pics looked normal, and it was going for $30 all told, so I bought it.

It arrived last night.

In theory, the Deep Cut mat I ordered before finding the eBay TW one should arrive eventually. It shipped from Vilnius Lithuania, which is about half an hour from Belarus, so I'm not begrudging them the two weeks it took to get it shipped out. It's slowly crawled across Germany through Cologne, and has been catching its breath near Amsterdam all weekend. I'll be delighted to see it before April.

I'll do a side-by-side of all of them and write up a blog post DZC Mat Review once I have all of them.

Now, I need to finish writing my diatribe I'll be sending TW attached to that picture.

My guess is they got a whole batch made with the color off, and their QC was at best "they all look the same so must be good" rather than comparing to any originals.

The bonus is you can do narrative games taking place between night and day now!

edit: oh if you're getting a Deepcut one I'm interested to see how dark you think it is; think I posted a while ago that I feel mine is a bit darker than it should be, but in pictures it tends to look alright.

Shaltari station looks a bit too much like a plant stand. Maybe it'll look better painted up. The PHR one needs that classic inner ring Bentusi glow effect.

Given how aesthetically different they are I don't see how they would be compatible. Anything on the plastic sprue would look weird on that Shaltari design.

I'm hoping by having the beginnings of a fleet of each faction I might be able to tempt some folks at the local gaming store to play and start collecting their own fleets. I stuck to the example fleets because of this. Alas, that means a Hector heavy cruiser for the PHR.

Mix of TTCombat and 4ground. TT ones are cheap and quick to assemble, but lack the detail of the 4ground ones which also come pre-painted.
