I can see Finland joining for very understandable reasons, but last I heard Sweden's PM said that it's not going to happen. That said, that tweet is a week old now and with how fast things are moving, who knows.

I have come to discourse on the profound inequities of the American political system.

Isn't Sweden tied into NATO indirectly through alliances with Finland, Norway, and Denmark?

If Russia were to attack the Baltic states, I sincerely doubt that Sweden would able to once again sit on the sidelines of a major European conflict.

I mean let's be real, they skated by as a "neutral" country during WWII through soft-core collaboration with the Nazis.

Ooo! Look at me! NO DON'T LOOK AT ME!

I am Swedish.

WW2: the country softcore collaborated a whole lot more with the allies. Germany was hated and feared. All of what army we had was deployed against a Nazi invasion. I want to remind everyone here that Quisling is a word in Swedish too, not only Norwegian. There wasn't any support given to Hitler, and when 9 may happened - the trains and the business were then made with a gun to their heads. Do you all seriously think the scandinavian resistance was flown in from Britain? Or that their supplies and safe houses sank into the mud on the eastern side of the mountain?
The difference between the Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Swedish governments in ww2 were that the first three had their decisions made for them.

NATO: both ours and Finlands public opinion is divided, slim majority is obviously pro- now, for both of us. Membership has been discussed continuously for 70 years. You shouldn't be surprised that some people have entrenched positions, and that the NATO question has been tainted by completely bananas influences. It's a cultural discussion for most at this point, completely devoid of foreign politics or, god forbid, military considerations. Our anti-imperialists despise Germany for being militaristic ffs. Attitude towards NATO is a load bearing part of peoples cultural identity here. Not political, cultural.

It's actually extremely simple.
NATO, in Sweden, has nothing to do with Russia.
NATO = USA.

Pro- or anti- stems from that alone. 30% is anti-usa on principle, 15% more are anti- as long as it's the safe majority opinion.

The PM is extremely fearful of internal party factionalism. She's the leader of the Social Democrats - the "default" party in our politics. They have never been able to be pro-Nato since 1949 for a reason. Aka a Democratic Socialistic reason.

What she's said should not be understood as a veto against membership - in swedish it's a very loud "these things take time. First we need to convince the people to want to convince their politicians to join NATO. Otherwise they won't vote for meeee! You fool! You utter gently caress :argh:"
(Sidenote; the Social Democratic party has owned the Prime Minister post for 70ish of the last 100 years.) (Remember Brexit? Public opinion about Nato is alot like Brexit.)

tl/dr Sweden might still soon-ish decide to join NATO if Finland wants us to, and our C-SPAM might successfully obliterate the political establishment in response

Hey now, when the tide turned we switched to soft-core collaboration with the allies :colbert:
Unfortunately many Swedes, including those in government, actually believe that Sweden stayed out of the war due to its neutrality rather than the fact that we constantly made exceptions to it and to this day it has a huge influence on swedish foreign and defence policy.

However, yesterday the Swedish parliaments foreign affairs committee voted that the government should announce the possibility of a NATO-option and public opinion is rapidly changing in favour of NATO. I mentioned upthread that since yesterday there's an previously unannounced Arleigh Burke parked in Stockholm with a second one somewhere in the baltic sea heading to Helsinki, speculation says. AFAIK it's common for NATO units to be stationed in countries applying for membership during the application process both as a stop-gap measure and as a tripwire.

Together with this, things are certainly moving:

https://mobile.twitter.com/akihheikkinen/status/1503453096084660226

Regarding the Swedish PMs message about not rocking the boat and staying out of NATO is best to avoid instability, well she said basically the same about sending arms to Ukraine so who knows. Not that I have much confidence in the Swedish government and its competence but I imagine that if we actually were to apply for membership, all the pieces need to be in place before the announcement so stalling and misdirecting would be the prudent move until then.

Edit: adding to the post above, it's an election year in Sweden so yeah public opinion will most certainly be a factor in the decision. Though the opposition is firmly in favour of NATO and traditionally always has been, so to me it seems like a perfect opportunity for triangulation

Historically in Finland this has been something like 20 % for joining Nato, 30 % uncertain/neutral and 50 % against. In January this was 30-27-43 (pro-uncertain-against), and last week it was 53-19-28. The latest polls also found that 63 % were for joining in a scenario where the president/PM were pro-joining with 23 % against.

Adding to this, according to the YLE poll 77% were positive if Sweden were to apply at the same time.

Well. Id say the Russians getting half our country (Finland) in the early 1800s was pretty existential. But yes still long time ago.

And re Covid. Latest numbers have excess mortality pretty close for the Nordics. Denmark included. I don't agree with the statement above but let's not derail further and lets go back to talk about dead Russians.

No, Cold Response takes place in the northern parts of Norway with the naval parts in the Norwegian sea. They did however conduct naval exercises with the Germans prior to docking in Stockholm. Things is, for PR-reasons usually when foreign vessels visit Stockholm they dock in the centre of the city but now it's docked at a cruise terminal in the northern part of Stockholm that really only is visited by people going on cruises. Visits are also usually communicated in advance, now it just turned up. Also a Swedish defence blogger claims he contacted the Swedish navy and that they said German, Estonian, Lithuanian and Latvian naval vessels would be visiting within the next few days or so. While this isn't uncommon, it is rare for so many to visit at the same time (provided its true) and the timing sure is interesting.

Whilst I'm speculating, it would be trivial for some of those NATO troops taking part in Cold Response to go on to further exercises in Sweden and Finland... Who knows, but it does seem like a lot of the pieces needed for an actual NATO application slowly are being out together. But it could be nothing.
