Yeah I don't really want the backyard furnace equivalent of the vaccine, but the dumber "anarchism/communism/deindustrialisation means no more medicine ever" takes rely on thinking it will erase all progress on the tech tree, and that we didn't invent anything before the factory.

Medicine is a lot more than just your antidepressants. The sheer amount of process oversight that goes into something like an implant to ensure safe manufacture and use is humongous, and it basically necessitates the oversight of a huge coercive entity like a government body. And that's one tiny, tiny aspect of it. Would you be willing to put faith in your new heart valve made by someone with no FDA oversight whatsoever?

I don't think current nations nor the FDA do such a good job that no other form of governmental system could match their success. Also, a not-insignificant part of the need for that level of coercive control is the overproduction, competition and overpricing of the product for a mass market, instead of production based on necessity.

I just found some Twitter Discourse re. surrogates and whether it's "human trafficking" or not. https://twitter.com/CitySisPeriod/status/1503783849553244163 Moneybagg Yo had Young Dolph killed. A couple of Moneybagg's albums hit the Top 10 charts in the US (one in 2019 and one in 2020, as well as a couple of mixtapes in 2017 and 2018), so I dunno where "started blowing up as soon as Dolph died" (in late 2021) is coming from. Dude probably got more clout from dating Megan thee Stallion back in ~2019 than he did from anything else.

And that's one tiny, tiny aspect of it. Would you be willing to put faith in your new heart valve made by someone with no FDA oversight whatsoever? I think generally the better anarchist critique is that many of our current systems rely on centralization of power because we live in a society of centralized power and our technology is all based around that. So if you wanted to change that society so utterly, you would need to design different technological solutions. Probably the easiest example is stuff like GM crops that are currently made to be non reproducing so the company can keep selling you them, rather than being self propagating to just make them as widely available as possible. Harder, of course, to find similar solutions for things like medicine production but also there is very little incentive to try because we live in a world where centralization is a desirable end in and of itself, it could be possible to make the world more decentralized (though possibly not to an ideal degree) but the world shapes itself, so you have a chicken and egg problem where you need it to be differently politically structured in order for there to be the incentive to develop the technological solutions, but at the same time technology determines a lot about our political structure. You're probably getting well into science fiction though for a lot of stuff being decentralizable, so my general take would be "yeah you probably can't do that, yet" OwlFancier has a new favorite as of 22:02 on Mar 15, 2022 |
