I think after he fell out with feminism because it became "too woke" (inclusive and accepting of sexuality), he got really focused on hashing out the nuance of whatever the hell his position was, and first he turned against the George Floyd protests, and then he was for the insurrectionists despite having not been for Trump beforehand. But probably a lot of his political views come tangentially from who on twitter was disagreeing with him and hanging out on 4chan. Nothing goes deep except the shame for jacking off, and he always is somewhere in the orbit of christianity. I feel like there's a whole thing where so many characters in the comic speak with his voice, but it's often not really clear what he really considers his place in the whole order that he illustrates in the comic. There's often a lot of stuff about race with blacks and whites, but I'm not really sure if Tatsuya Ishida identifies as white or asian. Dawgstar posted:Ishida's art really did improve, even as it was never bad. It's a shame about everything else. I wanna say it peaked in like 2015? He gets more technically proficient for a while, but after a point, he really stagnates and was just drawing the same thing over and over again. I started to wonder if some of the "silently walking through an area and looking around" strips were just traced and copied from earlier ones, and the usually-wordless sunday strips got more and more obfuscated by his attempts at stylization so they were mostly unreadable (which might've been more of an asset as his views got more niche). When he started drawing "good" rednecks fighting the

I think the most stunning development - not the most grotesque, which is definitely his depiction of queer people - is how the fembot metaphor completely crashes and burns. He goes from 'women are being degraded and mistreated' to 'women are being convinced they actually like being a fembot but fembots can be liberated, so women who don't agree with my politics are still victims I stand with' to, well... ...I can only imagine at this point he's aware just how many feminists don't agree with his absolutely hideous ideology. So 'fembots' are precisely what the sexists early in the comic treated them as, totally mindless, morally null tools to be used. The vast majority of women, in Tatsuya's expressed ideology, are in fact precisely the disposable sex objects and tools he claims not to see them as. It's frankly amazing that he can't see that. Do you think he ever looks back over his own work and notices the changes?

This really stood out to me as well. The strip where the "good" fembots look back scornfully on the packaged up woke fembot and decide she is not worthy of liberation feels emblematic of his view on "woke" women shifting - he used to write them as poor lambs suffering from false consciousness, and now he writes them as class traitors who deserve no sympathy. His views at this point in the comic are so radically hateful that he's now more interested in slamming women for the wrong feminism than he is in advocating for women's interests. Combine that with the anti-vaccine, anti-protest NWO stuff and it's a historological illustration of the pipeline from "gender critical feminism" to full right-wing conspiracy theorist.

My main question of "what the hell is this supposed to mean" is whatever he's supposed to be doing with the presence of Hecate, who is initially written as a reclaimation of witch and sacred feminine and yadda yadda etc. and then proceeds to actually do nothing for the Sisterhood, murders her fembot employees, and then...?????

The Hecate plotline feels very nihilistic. Her domain starts out as like a metaphor for radfem women's land stuff, maybe, where women can disconnect from patriarchy and go live in a liberated commune with the Mother Goddess. The witchcraft fantasy tavern stuff feels very like the primitivist agrarian living fantasy that permeates some women's land narratives. Then, as Ishida becomes angrier, more hateful and more hopeless, it becomes clear that this is a dead end, the women she's "saved" are hopelessly compromised by woke patriarchal programming, and all the holy crone can do is glower from the sidelines at a doomed civilisation. Extrapolating from the other issues Ishida has, I think this plotline was always doomed because fundamentally his question is, "how do I, an extremely guilty man, fit into this?" and there's zero place for his fulfilment in the women's land narrative. It had to become irrelevant unless he abandoned his core obsession - his own guilt and shame around his relationship to women and to society more broadly.

Do we know if he still has, or ever had, a specific radfem/gender critical mentor? Because I feel like the valence of 'all so-called feminists are actually patriarchy-loving woke sluts with tattoos and piercings, only this comic still understands' is very different if he has a specific mentor figure or if he's completely broken with any actual woman he talks to.

I wouldn't be shocked at a Dave Sim scenario where he talked to precisely no one and instead just did his own 'research' and it broke his brain.

The twitter thread OP has posited, noting that this interpretation is often overused and can at times even be harmful, that a lot of early Sinfest stuff comes across as someone with some questions about their own gender identity and sexuality. There are regular instances where Monique dresses in androgynous fashion and it's presented as extremely sexy and cool, Slick has multiple "gay panic" gags, there are comics about Fuchsia the demon girl trying to hide her horns with the punchline literally being "I keep showing," there's an actual literal "Trans Zone" that changes characters' sexes etc, and while as noted it's not always great to assume that bigots must all just be closeted individuals, looking over the comic as a whole makes a pretty compelling argument that there might actually be something to the idea that Tats was someone questioning their own identity (while also wrestling with who knows what else, Christian guilt, porn addiction, there's a lot of poo poo in there) and that rather than finding a healthy path forward with that they instead fell into deep self-loathing, denial, and resentment.

I'm trying to remember a comic I saw in the late 2000s. It was a one-off joke about a warmech "liberating" everything in sight. *BLAMBLAMBLAM* "Feel liberated, citizens!" "Feel liberated, houses!" *somebody shoots back* "Oh, I am going to liberate the poo poo out of you!" I thought for long time this was a filler strip somewhere in the 8-bit theater archive, but I reread it recently and didn't see this particular comic.

I was wondering if she was up to anything aside from writing a childrens' book and raising a family. I guess put her on the list of successful post-webcomic creators! No idea what the show'll be like, or what she's like when she's writing something that isn't autobiographical or making fun of historical figures. Kind of a similar premise to Adventure Time.

Is there some kind of annotation or something for Girl Genius so I know who the hell is backstabbing whom and why I should care? I thought I had a handle on what was going on when the party got to weird rat island, but I have no clue who the robot or plague doctor scientist are (I think the multi-armed lady was the bad guy in the London arc?) and the writing makes it seem like the scientist not actually being manipulated is some huge twist I should be excited about.

I don't think it's really a huge twist; it's just a case of "Lucrezia treats her minions as though they were her girl friends while also being willing to betray and use them on a moment's notice, and because they aren't stupid enough not to notice this, her history of backstabbing has finally blown up in her face." Although she's probably going to rise up out of the waters as a Robot Goddess anyway. EDIT: oh but yeah the robot is Lucrezia, in a robot body, if you didn't know that. She wants to get into a flesh body so she can use the waters of the not-Dyne to ascend to god-queen status.

Thanks, I guess that makes sense; I suspected that the robot was Lucrezia (though I thought there was a flesh-and-blood "prime" copy running around somewhere, so I wasn't sure), but her interactions with the scientist made me think that the body she's in belonged to someone else that the scientist had a preexisting relationship with and that's why it was a reveal that she knew it was Lucrezia all along.
