Invisible Clergy posted:At the beginning of the comic, Arudak was drawn as an old wizard type with a hunchback. After Mookie arbitrarily decided he was a good guy and not a bad guy and he and inkwich butted heads because of a misunderstanding and not a fundamental difference in philosophy, he was designated a Mookie, took off his hood, and Mookie began drawing his face entirely differently to make him look more youthful and softboi. Ok, I vaguely remember the potion thing. That's a bit of a weird thing to bring up out of the blue? I don't know, I don't think "what happened to Arudak's back?" was a burning question that needed answering.

I'm blown away with Mooks childlike understanding of racism it's not a systemic problem, its just specific mean bullies being very mean!

I just looked back and apparently he drank a potion called "back pain relief" and then was able to stand up straight. So "back pain relief' apparently means "cures chronic back injuries" and that wasn't a gag but a 100% serious moment.

It's the rare double asspull retcon. Oh, you thought he was a grumpy old man? Well I fooled you, he was actually a much younger guy with back pain! Oh, you thought he was a younger guy with back pain? Well I fooled you again, he was actually a fascist collaborator, but he only became one because some people bullied him, and someone else convinced him they were all evil by bringing up crimes that happened centuries ago, also his wife cheated on him, so if you really think about it he's the real victim!

I've been thinking, this whole pack of dialog thing is still pretty gross for deaf people. Does Mookie think they have no means of communication except through sending letters written in the style of a Confederate general writing Annabelle back home? They can sign, read lips, use implants, they can speak. And when talking to people who can't sign, like me, they can have an interpreter sign what I'm saying to them. It's almost as if using a deaf character to support your no dialog rule is a gross misunderstanding of how deaf people interact with the world.

Gross misunderstanding basically summarizes the foundation of Mookie's ontology though

I have mixed feelings about Mookie looking desperate this week to bring in more cash from DD legacy. It feels very much like squeezing blood from a stone.

Like, I've got K6BD ebooks, among others.

If you're the paranoid type, a PDF also lets you have the collection saved in a nice format, in case the comic's website ever goes away for whatever reason.

Maxwell Lord posted:Like it's clear Mookie never really knew who Arduak was as a character, first he's a villain, then he's just a grump, then he's super soft because he wants to bring his dead wife back, then secret Nazi. He may be the most poorly defined character here and I'm including Corpse Wife who's still just eating crackers now.

In a story that was all around better and/or more charming, Kaianda just enjoying new experiences and sensations in the background while the plot carries on would be sweet. But in Legacy, it just fucks more with the pacing and produces more chances for Snout to be insufferable.

She didn't add anything, so why was she even in that scene? Seriously, it reads like Mookie literally just came up with the Arudak, Nazi collaborator, story the instant he added it. So he just jammed it into the "Find the Chandak" story with all the grace of a sledge hammer. Legacy honest to God reads like someone is trying to tell a linear story out of someone playing an RPG and the player keeps dropping the main story to go do random side quests. Also it's the most boring game ever.

Wtf is "reading the lake?" What the hell does he mean he needs to find the chandak? She was standing next to Ilsyn, who was standing next to Arudak, who was standing next to Snout just now, she's like 15 feet away from him, max. Go talk to her. Did Snout wander off to the pier a few feet away and write in his diary about how he... needs to talk to the chandak who is just behind him? God drat, do I hate this comic. As a palate cleanser, have a story that goes on too long without making any progress but is actually funny.

Jesus loving christ. HOW? How many times is he going to keep repeating this poo poo? Is it because Mookie can't remember what's going on in his own comic, or because he thinks his audience is too stupid to remember?

Cloacamazing! posted:Leavin aside everything else wrong with this page: This is not how footnotes work. I've searched the entire page for a second *, which is something I deeply regret doing, and I can't find one. It also creates a problem where one really doesn't need to exist. With all the other crap going on, and given that the chandak has a title that functions the same as a name, I don't think anyone, myself included, would've complained that we the audience (or Snout) don't know what her name is. I would've been fine if he'd just kept calling her "the chandak" since we are unlikely to need to keep her discrete from other chandaks. But Mookie realized he hadn't named this character, still hasn't thought of a name, and decided to draw attention to it with this "footnote." I wonder if there'll be another filler comic where Snout has a big list of terrible fantasy names like he did earlier with corpsewife and/or inkwich and he gets to name her for some inexplicable reason. Samovar posted:I can't help but be reminded of that joke newspaper Spider-Man strip where everyone keeps repeating themselves. At least newspaper Spider-Man knew about this unavoidable flaw of the medium and even made jokes about it sometimes, like when Morlun went through a dimensional rift to newspaper Spider-Man to try to kill Spider-Man but decided to leave before finding him because it took him forever to accomplish even minor tasks due to constant recapping.

Pulsarcat posted:Seriously, it reads like Mookie literally just came up with the Arudak, Nazi collaborator, story the instant he added it. in the very mildest defense of terraciano, i am pretty sure this scene was planned for a whole (like a year? time means nothing Legacy). we first got introduced to the phrase seku muat on arudak's picture, and then shortly afterwards the phrase was explained to be nazis in one of the many info dumps that terraciano loves in his no dialogue comic. i think everyone at the time called that either arudak or his wife would be nazis or nazi collaborators except, as always, there were two problems: one is that snout has the mental development of a toddler and the memory of an old person with dementia, so he never puts two-and-two together until the plot spells it out for him, and terraciano's apparent belief that friendship means avoiding friction and conflict at all costs, so even if he did figure it out early snout could never ask "yo why is your wife photo titled BIG HUGE NAZI" because that might be awkward and hurt feelings a cartoon duck fucked around with this message at 12:30 on Mar 16, 2022 |
