Okay there's only two genuinely good moments in the Dragonlance universe One is when Tas smashes the dragonorb The other is when Sturm dies.

I remember being frustrated that most Dragonlance books were not specifically about and starring dragons, then found the Douglas Niles book "Dragonlance: The Dragons" and my wish was granted. It was pretty good, if I remember correctly.

Pretty sure I mentioned this before but the end of Sword of Truth Richard uses his dragon ball wishes to separate the people who like magic and those who don't into two worlds and the one without magic is Earth and Richard becomes literally God. Also I haven't seen that interview before but that loving hilarious. Goodkind had such a high opinion of himself. He probably also talked about how all the worlds problems were caused by parents not beating their kids when they mouth off, because Richard does that and he's shown as a hero.

I'm not sure how much it still holds up but when I was younger I was a big Fred Saberhagen fan. I never read his Empire of the East series but I read The Book of Swords which was a sequel series and I remember enjoying it, though I remember some vaguely porny scenes based in some like porn temple group. I enjoyed the idea though, a pile of gods create 12 magic swords with different abilities and hand them out to people at random to see who will collect them all and rule the mortals. Some of the swords were rather neat, one made you super lucky but would vanish from you at random and help your enemies. One sword guided you to whatever you wanted but it took the hardest possible route. One made you immune to any weapons but if a dude came at you barehanded the sword did nothing and you essentially auto-lost in a fight against anyone unarmed because you couldn't drop the sword in a fight. I remember my favorite being a sword that would make you an unstoppable berserk fighter who could defend any area but it didn't give a gently caress about the wielders health, so until every enemy is dead you can't die but the sword does nothing to prevent you getting injured so you win the battle but you are not going to live. I'm fairly sure the Book of Swords tied into a bunch of poo poo from his previous series but I read it without the prequels and still got the vibe. The world was post apocalypse after a pile of nukes dropped and some super AI like wrote itself into the fabric of existence and hosed with how nukes worked to stop it. This led to the AI becoming a godlike being, the biggest nuke turned into some kind of devil equivalent and magic starts to exist. However magic didn't work around technology so even like a regular dude in a well forged suit of armor just straight prevented magic from working so it was just used to gently caress with people in like dining halls and poo poo and wizards were only vaguely useful. I truly wonder how that series holds up, I remember liking his Sci-Fi books as well; I believe the sci-fi series was called Berserker. TGG fucked around with this message at 20:57 on Mar 19, 2022 |

Yeah the Berserker stories were great, there's an old one called Berserker's Planet which mixes fantasy and sci-fi. A crashed Berserker AI has created a fighting tournament on a regressed colony world, all the best fighters kill each other off and then the winner gets a "prize" (death) from the Berserker god. Some great sword and sorcery barbarian stuff mixed with the killer robot, and then some big game hunters from off-world crash the party. There's a couple fixup Berserker novels from the 90s that are pretty bad though, totally padded up page counts.

Yeah, I remember at least one late Berserker book that seemed to have a kind of anti-abortion/right to life theme to it, which was weird. There was another that was basically Moby Dick but in space with a Berserker which was okay, but like you said, it was longer than it needed to be. The earlier stuff was good, and the shared anthology Berserker Base was great, to my mind eclipsing the original author.

I remember enjoying the heck out of The Black Gryphon by Mercedes Lackey (no one ever brings her up when discussing fantasy, which is weird because she was quite prolific and not a bad writer), mainly because of how different it was. A war is happening, sure, but besides the opening and ending we don't see any of it. 90% of the book is MASH with wizards and fantasy monsters chillin' in the medic camps, fixin' wounds and doing physical therapy. Not much plot but super entertaining. I also remember there being a character that expressed complex PTSD in a sympathetic manner, which I myself had as a kid and was the first time I'd ever seen it discussed. Super progressive for the time. There are two sequels but I never read them. Highly recommended

Another "weird but not bad" is Mary Gentle's "Rats and Gargoyles". Got its rough edges but some interesting stuff. Unfortunately, people can't hear "Mary Gentle" without immediately jumping to some of her most questionable work.

I was thinking about those Swords books after a day of work doing jack poo poo and I think I remember my favorite story. One guy has a sword that makes you supernaturally perceptive and anyone who sees you while you are holding it sees you as someone they know, someone who they would answer to positively and honestly without question. He is infiltrating something and there is this bad guy there who has the immune to any weapon sword, which also immune to the weirdo sword magic and he can just see through that poo poo. So the final fight in the story is just these 2 guys picking up and throwing away the swords for like 3 pages. The man holding the deception sword is tough to attack because he sounds like your wife or whatever and he has supernaturally good timing. The other sword is just instant death if the other guy holds anything. So it's this fight between how quickly can one of them process the supernatural information they get from holding the stealth sword and use it to pick out the timings of the other guys movement, than use that adjusted time to pick out the correct moment to drop it so that if the other dudes sword triggers he's hosed because you have no weapon and he is stuck helpless against anything. It's just solid prose about a pile of guys just juggling swords and I always thought it worked. It was the kinda joyous nonsense I enjoyed in books as a youth.
