So genuine question. Apparently the Ukrainians are using standard commercial drones with cameras to fly around and locate Russian command posts and encampments, and that information is then used for artillery strikes, and/or getting wild footage of these areas getting lit up. What kind of deterrents can be used to combat this? I can't imagine it's cost effective to target relatively cheap commercial drones with expensive anti-air weapons.

Jamming ISM band communications, or those registered bands that are used for larger commercial drones. The US had portable SDR jamming devices used to disrupt cellphone communications in Afghanistan and Iraq, for example.

I doubt a SAM could even target a small commercial drone, even if they had any gas to run them. I don't think they use flak cannons anymore either so it would be down to massed machine gun fire or maybe snipers? Depends on how close the commercial drones needs to get.

Some use jamming signals and other things to gently caress with their controls and drop them. Others are net cannons. Birds of prey have also been used. psydude posted:I read somewhere that there around 20 Russian MGs assigned to units at the start of the invasion, meaning that Russia has lost 20% of its division commanders in less than 3 weeks of fighting. There's probably a misunderstanding somewhere in there. Russians use the "eastern" system where the general ranks start with MG, instead of the "western" system where the first general rank is Brigadier. So Russian MG is equivalent to OF-6, and leads a brigade. Divisions are led by LGs. I'd expect there to be ~60 russian MGs on the field.

sneakyfrog posted:Do they just like not have any ncos at all? The Russian army still inherits part of the Soviet military organization, which was based around having a large army of conscripts and reserves. Because of that, they weren't planning on having senior NCOs hanging around in the army for 20 years, the regular army training pipeline doesn't support that. So the jobs you'd expect to see given to those senior NCOs are given to lower officer grades, who have correspondingly less authority.

The lieutenant, he said, had forced a private to swap uniforms but was discovered because of the age discrepancy—and because Ukrainian forces found Russian personnel files in the column’s command vehicle.
