i went in for a full playthrough this time, the later levels are bit more interesting than the start, adventure park really wears out its welcome with 7 stages. final boss was a lot easier than on the snes

Mr Nutz sure was a game! 926 nuts total, 424k score. Not the worst platform I’ve ever played, but not the best either. Definitely not a patch on Super Mario Land or even Hammerin’ Harry. It was just a basic platformer without any wrinkles. I didn’t realize the final boss was the final boss; he was stupidly easy. I audibly scoffed and laughed at the ending text crawl. Onto Mr Driller!

mr nutz was kind of a "labor of love" of just 2 developers that clearly put some thought into the game because i really think it's quite good. mr nutz 2 on the other hand was made by a different team and just ticks all of the amiga europlatformer boxes, it's completely miserable

If you are annoyed like me to find out that Mr. Driller does not save your high scores, use the Japanese version of the game instead, it does. Each block is 1 meter instead of 5 feet there though, so remember that when comparing depths. Also that means American Mr. Driller is just like 2 feet taller than in Japan I guess.

i admit it's been a long time since I've played a non-pokemon gameboy RPG, but yikes, River King 2 starts rough. not as in difficult, just incredibly opaque and pretty dull. i've also been meaning to play it since I've heard a lot of people say it was an underrated classic so I'm not writing it off yet but it's not off to a great start!

I started River King 2 last night and nearly got killed by a cat. Also I dunno what changed but my Analogue Pocket isn't blessed to play games off the GB Everdrive X7 anymore.

was there a firmware update? I haven't updated mine since day 1 and if it's nulling Everdrives that isn't exactly making me want to!

There was a Pocket update early in February. I just hadn't popped in the Everdrive until yesterday to try out Mr. Nuts. Hopefully that jailbreak finally happens soon, because these GB Studio patches are a pain in the rear end. I've been thinking it'll happen when the full Analogue OS update happens.

Legend of the River King 2… uh.. might end up filing this one under “Great idea, bad execution “. I’ve been playing for a couple hours and caught one (1) fish. Had plenty on the hook, just couldn’t bring them in. And it takes awhile for them to bite. I’m constantly moving around, trying to get into a better position. The snail’s pace at which you move and menu doesn’t help things. Gonna keep trying though! Maybe it’ll click. I like fishing mini-games, and the idea of an RPG around them sounds cool Edit: the game heard me whine. Suddenly I’m catching fish lmao. I got the new rod from the guy who wanted an Opaleye so that probably helps TheHoosier fucked around with this message at 17:42 on Mar 3, 2022 |

So far I’m pretty lukewarm on Mr Deez. Between the hit boxes and music, it’s been hard for me to really sink my teeth in to. I’m on the second world and playing with save states, so I may still end up finishing it before the end of the month. I am really curious to try one of the superior console versions now, though, as I can see how this would be far more fun in a better iteration. I love Mr Driller, I played this a bit back in my teens and I’ve been really enjoying my time with it again. It’s the perfect pick up and play a couple rounds game for me, and I’ll probably continue to play it after the month is over.

That's on Screen Scraper, I'm afraid. I just don't have the wherewithal to care about that sort of thing nowadays. I used to be ridiculous about keeping the art in the same region throuhgout. Right ballache it was.

If anybody needs help on River King, here ya go: https://fogu.com/rk2/basics/fishing.html This website is great, and helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. It's still a pretty slow game progress-wise, but now that the fishing is going smoother it's not too bad!

I updated the firmware on the X7 and it didn't fix the issue. It's not that big of a deal, I have some other Gameboys and I think Krikzz has more important things to deal with right now.

Played a little bit of all three games. Mr Driller is fun and will probably one of my go-to quick games. I think I've been mixing it up with Drill Dozer all these years and wasn't expecting a puzzle game. Legend of the River King 2 seems... okay? It's one of those games I used to see in Nintendo magazines as a kid (along with things like Survival Kids) and really wanted to play because it looked like Zelda/Pokemon. Haven't put too much time into it, but it feels clunky and weird. Mr Nutz is fine. I'll play until I either beat it or get a game over, whichever comes first. Edit: Proud to say I'm one of the very few people to have beaten Mr Nutz GBC. Not because it is hard but because who gives a poo poo about Mr Nutz. Mr. Driller is a lot of fun. My main experience with it prior to this is playing it on my old flip phone, which I'm sure was a much worse port. Here are my scores so far: 500m / 2500ft 1000m / 5000ft I haven't really dug () into survival mode yet

Mr. Driller owns. Cleared 2500ft with 140040, now to tackle 5000ft and then see how I go with survival mode.

annnnnddd done! whew. overall I’d say this is a mild recommendation. the game doesn’t have much to do, per se, except fish and pick flowers/catch bugs, and fishing was the only interesting part. Parts of the main quest required certain bugs or flowers, but it was just a fetch quest of the most basic sort. Fishing at least requires some active participation on the player’s part. I haven’t done the postgame area or boss, but supposedly you can catch all of the game’s fish in the postgame area, which is really nice if you’re going the Pokémon route and filling out the Pescadex. I think you can only face the postgame boss-fish when you’ve caught every other fish, but don’t quote me on that. I ended up turning around on this game a lot! There isn’t much in the way of interesting systems, but the fishing was fun enough! The different styles of rods offered a way to solve tricky fish or change up the rhythm. Some fish eat bait without taking the hook, some are hard to use lures on, some can only be brought in by trolling, etc.. I admit I had to play this on 2x speed. It’s just so slow. When your game is mostly fetch quests, traversal needs to be faster than a fuckin crawl. The random battles were superfluous for the most part, but they are “required” in that it’s the only way to build up your HP, and you need a certain threshold of HP for a part of the main quest. Overall, another really solid set of games! I want to play other entries of Mr Driller and River King now, lol. Unfortunately my Japanese reading hasn’t gotten good enough yet to really enjoy anything in Japanese, but it might be worth a shot.
