Picked this up with a couple friends and its surprisingly solid for Early Access. STRONG Terraria vibes with a huge and varied map, boss-focused gameplay, and mute NPCs you lure into your base with tiny rooms fit with just a door and a bed. Playing it before the inevitable wave of explanatory wiki's and guides has been a lot of fun and the world opens up a huge amount once you finish off the first three bosses.

I imagine we'll get bored with it in a week or two (depending on how much more content there is beyond the first three bosses) but its a super strong start and with regular updates could be a great game.

This is kind of fun and relatively good. But I refunded it. I really do like precission platformers and this one even has secrets strewn in there. But there is one mayor flaw. There are random spikes popping up from the ground. You get a half second warning so you can dodge them, but depending on your luck, they might just be unavoidable. For example, if you doublejump past an obstacle and are falling down towards a singular safe space. If the RNG decides to spawn such a spike there while you fall towards it, all you can do is perish.

It's always weird, when one little mechanic sort of ruins a game for me.

It is pretty good! Very similar to an isometric Terraria in a lot of ways. Some base building, some crafting, some ARPG ish combat and elements. Slowly kill bosses out there in the world to progress. So far I like it a lot and it’s also surprisingly complete I think for an EA game!

I was surprised at how difficult the combat was at first, but I was ramming my face into places i obviously wasn't equipped for

Also got jumpscared by spiders. I thought two moblins was bad with a stick, try six spiders with just a sword as they swarm you from all sides. Yeah I know. But still. Maybe it will change as I progress, but I often feel like I react in time to avoid an attack, but get hit anyway, because the dodging feels slow. I guess it's mostly in my head, because the I-Frames come instantly. Something about the controls feels slow, but I can't put my finger on it.
The exploration and map design are top notch though. And I really love how they handled the manual. Learning about obscure game mechanics by earning the relevant information is a fun design.

Nah there definitely is not a lot of room for error, you can't cancel your combos/attacks which makes it feel like it takes forever to roll away. I try to be judicious with my attacks and always be ready to evade instead of mashing attack. At the same time, some enemies can be stunlocked so pushing forward is best. It's an interesting combat system, I wouldn't call it the best but it's serviceable and challenging so I like it.

Also, Ghostwire: Tokyo is coming out in a few days. I'm freaking pumped for that.

It looks and feels aesthetically like the re-release of Links Awakening but in practice it is a lot more like a modern action game like Dark Souls. You can eventually upgrade your attack/defense/etc and find useful spells, but important items are buried in places. I generally play exploration games by rubbing my face against every wall and corner, and this game still has had some clever shortcuts that existed the whole time, but only one side of it was obvious. I could have been running around with a shield way earlier than I was if I just found one weird shortcut

So it's a soulslike, but cutesy and isometric

I like it ok but it shoehorned in a poor version of Souls combat when regular old Zelda combat would have been fine. Like I don’t think you’re supposed to find the shortcut that thecluckmeme mentioned until after you get the shield, it’s just that you die so easy until you get it so it feels bad. I say this as someone who likes difficult games, Tunic’s combat is just rear end. People in the Xbox thread mentioned you can turn on infinite health/stamina but that doesn’t sound fun either.
