I haven't been loving Spider-Man Beyond, but this week's issue is worth picking up for a fraction of a Nextwave reunion. I guess it's wrapping up next week - do we still not know what's happening afterwards?

Edit: oh, it's Zeb Wells. I remember hearing about that but I think I misinterpreted it as him running Beyond and leaving after.

The X Men thread might be able to be more specific but most of the fallout is unsurprisingly in Excalibur.

On the subject of Marvel accidentally overlapping with real world stuff, I decided to check out the recent World War She Hulk event in Avengers and uh awesome timing for a story that involves Russian false flag terrorism and establishing a nation of vampires in Ukraine

X Lives of Wolverine abruptly wrapped up a plot where Mikhail Rasputin had created a parallel mutant government inside Russia in what seems like might have been a reaction to the invasion. Wouldn't want to suggest that Colossus' brother had spurred the siege of Kyiv.

It's what they get for using one of America's Designated Enemies as the bad guys, though. Like, nobody is accusing X-Men of Anglophobia because they're using the UK government as the bad guys. It's fiction!

Also, the BBcode for the creepy lettering is a hell of a thing to see, be sure to quote that post or this one.

I don't have the issue in front of me, but from memory the gist of the political stuff was a text box saying like, "The Russian government put an end to Mikhail's mutant state and is back to normal," which is a simple hasty rewrite. It feels like an abrupt end to the parallel mutant Russian government plot after not doing much with it.

EDIT: I checked, Rasputin uses the phrase "the new Russia" in the first half and then there's this data page.

No, Endless Mike is right. Because this comic had a physical edition, it's been written and done for at least a month, because that's the kind of lead time you need for a print edition. The timeline doesn't quite work.

The quotes a bit misleading out of context. It's referring to the win/loss percentage that was put on the cards before they began putting the power rankings, which where done mainly to appease the baseball card company helping produce the cards. When they switched to power rankings, they put in more work, starting with the guidebooks Gruenwald had written, and talking to the comic editors for newer characters.

Lobok
Jul 13, 2006

Say Watt?

^^beaten, but I quoted the relevant part from the article

They knew what they were doing with that quote tweet to get people to click. The very first line of Marvel cards had a win % that was made up, but if you're like me and you were thinking about all the RPG-like stats of each character that were the hallmark of the later lines then those had actual care and thought and consultation put into them.

quote:

In 1991, Budiansky and his team decided to abandon the fake stats and move directly to power rankings. They had more concrete citations in mind for the second set, using the Marvel Universe Handbooks put together by executive editor Mark Gruenwald in the ‘80s.

The nerve center of Marvel’s unofficial canon database, Gruenwald was consulted by the cards team to ensure it had things right for the audience, which ranged from die-hard fans to art collectors. His granular attention to detail and encyclopedic knowledge of the relative power levels of various characters meant that the creators had a reliable resource in the young editor.

[...]

Even with Gruenwald’s encyclopedic knowledge of the Marvel universe, the team sometimes had to use guesswork to get the rankings to a viable point. Newer characters without prewritten rankings and backstories needed a bit of guesswork to place them in the canon, for instance. The team would go to other editors around Marvel for their assessment of the power levels, using the pre-existing resource that was the editorial knowledge of lore and canon to appropriately place the characters where they belonged.
