my cat is norris posted:we've had deer pillage our bird feeders early in the morning It's a first for me. This feeder, to its credit, has successfully confounded squirrels, pigeons and grackles for years now. I cut that branch he's sitting on but last night he found another branch that hangs low enough with his fat rear end at the end of it and I don't want to cut it too . He's way too nonchalant about my dogs though and would have been in one dog's mouth if she hadn't been busy smelling his butt so I think a trap and a trip to the country are in his future. This was right after the other pic. I scared him off, so he moved 6 inches on the branch and laid down like this within arm's reach of me like I couldn't see him. He's an idiot.

Bula Vinaka posted:If you leave food out for him, over time he might warm up to you a little. He is so big and loveable,a really handsome cat, but he is also obviously dying After he finished the first bowl I filled it up with the rest and he came right back and ate all that too. I am pretty sad, he is such a fine cat but there is nothing I can do to help him even if he'd let me. Sorry to bring bad news to a fun thread.

https://imgur.com/a/Kbl8DUY dur I forget how to embed video from imgur but this is video of a red whiskered bulbul merrily chirping on a wire. A year ago a pair of these made their home in our tree, nested and disappeared. They are not native. Their song is distinctly different from other birds around here. I was so glad to hear their song again this morning and saw that they came back. sometimes it sounds like they are saying three thirty three

Hihohe posted:not mine but look at this big rear end mite squeeze into a hole I know these things pose absolutely no threat but they creep the heck out of me in any case. I guess they just look too much like ticks. Not too many exciting critters in my life lately as it's mid-winter and I unfortunately didn't get any photos or video of the skunk traipsing down the sidewalk in front of my house the other day. One of my cats found this tiny millipede a while back. Based on the colour I think it's a juvenile, but I'm not sure. The Bohemian waxwings have been making their customary ruckus as they gorge on berries. This couple of flickers blessed my yard with their presence. Love those birds!

When I got a remote-controlled outdoor camera I was worried the noise would spook the birds, but luckily it's quiet enough it hasn't. HOWEVER, as I was creeping on this robin he stopped and stared right at the camera after I'd moved it, multiple times. They have good enough hearing to hear the worms in the dirt so maybe he was able to hear it?

Cross-posting from the cute thread.... We recently had a mystery burrow show up in the bushes in the backyard. At first it was a tiny hole, then it got bigger and bigger and the pile of dirt kicked out clogged a sprinkler head. Efforts to trap whatever it was were not successful. Nothing came out when we stuck a hose in there and flooded it. I finally caved and spent too much on some wildlife cams to figure out what it even was. My money was on an armadillo or gopher tortoise. Dienes said rabbit. We were both wrong.... https://i.imgur.com/pzG5jqp.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/am7qv6G.mp4 There are actually two, I've christened them Lemmiwinks and Templeton. On the second night I had put the camera outside the bush pointing toward the trap to see if they were being clever with it or just avoiding it or what. This was apparently camera 2, which I forgot to set into video clip mode. It only caught a glimpse of Lemmiwinks watching Thumper from the bush (bottom left), but it did capture this excellent sequence in the morning. On night 3 I pointed the camera right at the burrow entrance. https://i.imgur.com/fJTWI3d.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/wjztPgz.mp4 The second camera I put on one of the palm trees holding up my hammock wasn't as useful. I thought it might catch if that rabbit was coming from a neighbor's yard, or where everyone goes when they leave the bushes. But it did catch some excellent birbs. https://i.imgur.com/bQmT5gB.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/kobUHBQ.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/1dlm2JK.mp4 And in the morning the bush camera caught these two. https://i.imgur.com/dSFiaza.mp4 Last night I positioned the camera just a tad high but still caught some excellent clips. https://i.imgur.com/eQ0hzH2.mp4 https://i.imgur.com/0QtZy1Z.mp4

I have to get some of those for Mum's place - she gets a huge variety of birds in her yard, and she would love being able to see all of the visitors she gets. Yesterday I managed to get some (nearly) in-focus photos of some Superb Fairy Wrens at North Curl Curl beach: ↑ Pretty sure this individual is a female. ↑ Less certain about this one. The blue-ish tail suggests that it might be a non-breeding male (breeding plumage looks like this). It's hard to tell from the images, but they are tiny - about the size of a walnut. They're constantly on the move, and being so small they exist on a totally different timescale giants like us. They also stick very closely to the undergrowth to avoid predators like (like Currawongs and Pied Butcher Birds) so it's almost impossible to get the autofocus to grab onto them, so I am really happy with these shots.

Congratulations on the shots! I can't imagine trying to photograph something that small and hyperactive. It must be SO difficult.

A few instances of critterquesting in China. A hedgehog outside a restaurant in Beijing. A Peking gecko in my old apartment in Beijing. They're one of the northernmost species of geckos in the world. This guy lived with me for almost a whole winter before heading back outside in the spring. A massive snail near my new apartment in Guangzhou. Based on a little googling I think it's an invasive African giant snail but I'm really not sure. Any thoughts?
