yeah I did this with ship design in DW1, where you can toggle automation on a per-role basis
finding that I have a LOT of fun designing cool bases for my playstyle, not so much with most of the ships

the advisor suggestion level of automation is nice, too, to give an idea of what I ought to be thinking about, even if I rarely take the suggested course of action exactly

the biggest issue has always been that Stellaris gives you very little to do besides watch extremely slow progress bars creep up, not that the way those progress bars creep is implemented poorly which was also true.

DW can be slow-moving, but the living economy stuff means that there's lots of little things to fiddle around with and fiddling around with them successfully can have big ripple effects, and dicking with mining station claims can shift the balance of the galaxy in ways that occupying someone's fuckin capitol could not in Stellaris.

Why would an ambulance be leaving the hospital?

I love playing Stellaris but it's definitely for the sort of roleplay, where you carefully tailor an empire and then explore around and make decisions based on who your little dudes are. Once the empires are all established I can't be bothered any more, but that's okay, I just go make another race of little friends. I can see where it would be lacking for someone who wants to get their teeth into like, actual *strategy*.

This. I can’t stress how much folks need to stop automating poo poo in DW and actually learn to play the game.

And remember: aside from the big policy screen you can use to set defaults you can always make exemptions. I want my ship design automated, except for this one base I made as cheap as possible so I can get new colonies healthcare ASAP and this one ship I'm setting up as an area weapon equipped suicide bomber. I want my military fleets to do their own thing, except this one fleet I use as my trouble shooters.

How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Yeah, I've got a shitton of little firefighting fleets to deal with minor issues, a powerful task group that's set to just wipe out enemy fleet presence aggressively and manual troop transport and blockade fleets to seize planets. After a certain point, I got tired of doing research and automated it, but now that the tree's opened up a bit more I'm interested in it again and now have taken back manual control. When the budget's absolutely fine, I can give it back to the AI to minmax, but when I want to build up a cash reserve or turboinvest in research or colony growth, I take it back again. It's less about finding the positions you want your policy settings at 100% of the time, but learning to slide the levers of control as you play.

I don't agree with this at all. Stellaris is actually the game that led to me never buying another Paradox game. It sucked at launch, and I was tired of being milked with for pay DLC to maybe eventually get to a game I would want to play.

I was going to say something clever based off the name but I couldn't think of it.

Also the abandoned fleets are great but I would prefer the notifications about "we found this awesome ship what do" to be more on the level of once per fleet rather than once every time my construction ships finish the last one and move on to the next.

Also this thread discussed Endless Space 2 for at least one full page so you are telling blatant lies.

DW2 is very fun for me, it can't be said enough that the automation is MEANT to be adjusted, pared down, tweaked to whatever personal level you like. It's an automation toolset, and people are confusing the default training wheels for "the way it's intended to be played" which is definitely not the case.

Hell, one of the most fun DW1 games I ever had was me manually controlling tax rates, the private-sector station and freighter designs, and a fleet of constructors to build all the stations. Playing it like Transportation Tycoon, trying to keep the economy strong, spaceports building, and natural resources flowing while ignoring the rest of the poo poo. Not my problem. I just run the trains.

DW 1 is one of the greats but 2's a little rough right now, imo. It has some rough patches in implementation that aren't present in the DWU release that hopefully get smoothed out in the coming months.

A recent post in the (sadly very quiet) Old World thread got me into watching multiplayer Old World matches this last week, and man does that game look fun. I kind of put it out of mind waiting for it to come to Steam but now I might just get it on Epic. Unfortunately it seems like relatively few people played it. Just comparing the UI to playing Civ VI and Humankind recently is nuts.

Unless you're saying I've played so much Stellaris that I can no longer be considered a useful metric to apply to the general computer game playing public, in which case fair.

Yep, 100%. I liked having a single "independent" fleet I was in charge of, and it wound up feeling surprisingly roleplay-y, like I was leading a hush-hush mercenary fleet aiding the state war effort wherever I could.

Megamarm
DW2 chat: had a cool moment just now. I've been playing the game with default automation on and peeling away layers as I get comfortable, and started messing with the ship designer more. Specifically, my colony ships and why their fuel range is so poo poo. Here's the initial design, with a (for this stage of the game) lovely range (again, total fuel, not single jump) of 440M. This ship is using the Calista Dal (efficiency optimized) hyperdrive. For comparison, my civilian ships are generally around 1200M.

Just for laughs, I tried fitting an Equinox hyperdrive, which is high speed low efficiency, and got this:

Ignoring for a moment that the ship can't actually run the hyperdrives at full power without a reactor upgrade, fuel range actually went up slightly. When switching from the efficient to the speed engine. It got me to actually pay attention and see the issue: the static energy requirements are so high, that it saves fuel overall to just get there faster so you can turn off the lights after it's done. Turns out passenger compartments have really high static energy requirements and they're probably not worth adding on to colony ships just to pack in a few more souls.

After swapping the passenger compartments for fuel cells and making some other adjustments, my colony ship range is now similar to my other ships. However, even then Equinox still slightly beats out the Calista-Dal on fuel range.

Moral of the story, if it's fuel range you care about, check your hyperdrive options carefully and maybe get some surprising results.

DW2 owns.

I especially like the way the ships move. The roll and turn. I think the art direction must be very good, because something about it just looks way better to me than fights in Stellaris despite the latter generally having very high quality art.

I had my fleet take on a Hive Carrier (big ship) and it gave me a chill to see them advancing on it in echelon with the incoming fire just kind of drifting closer and closer to the lead ship. Also some cool shots like watching the fleet from the side, outlined against the star.
