Some good takes when speaking in retrospective.

-Were not seeing a lot of TOS because if hit by artillery or drone, every friendly in the rear gets annihilated. No one wants it in their column (its a massive bomb with no armor).

-Invasion secrecy did not give RU information units time to prep. UKR completely dominated the information war. Putin friendly politicians in the western sphere have zero room to pressure Ukraine for fear of public backlash.

Given the Russian government's recent track record there is a non-zero chance it will be discovered that the arsonist is actually a Russian-born employee of the embassy.

I'd have thought the main Russian priority with tanks wouldn't be manufacturing new ones but instead getting their existing inventory where it can be useful and repairing those already in place. It's not like WWII where they need to produce tens of thousands of modern tanks and a production disruption could be crippling, I'd assume even if they were making new ones it would probably be at least a month from the start of manufacturing to getting it shipped to Ukraine, probably more.

Assuming this is real, isn't it certain there are CIA or similar folk on the ground identifying any captured Russian equipment to flag highly valuable equipment? I'd think they wouldn't make a peep about super valuable finds until at least until they were safely transported onto NATO soil.

A lot of this stuff is being found by normal civilians. But you're right that there is almost certainly a team already figuring out how to get it back to Poland.

This is the other fun part about how much Putin has lost in this stupid war: Technological advantages as well are entirely being thrown away or given away to his enemies.

For sure, I'd assume there are tons of ultra-valuable previously secret items flowing in NATO's hands that aren't as large or photogenic, probably lots of high ranking officer and technical staff captured too. On a related note there was an NYtimes article about how tens of thousands of IT young workers were leaving Russia which are exactly the group of workers most nations absolutely would want to keep around to remain competitive.

Nice interview with a Russian journalist who's been covering the state security services since the 90s. One of the answers I thought was interesting is how is news of the war is promulgating in Russia

quote:

Q: I saw a quote from you where you suggested that opposition to Putin among average Russians was likely to gather steam on social-media and Internet platforms, and that Internet companies pulling out of Russia for reasons of wanting to punish Putin or the Russian state could have negative effects. Is that still how you feel?

A: Right now, it’s not about resistance. It’s more about an ability to talk and to get uncensored information about Ukraine. It’s about an ability to talk with your friends about what is going on. And, unfortunately, social media is basically the only place we actually can do that in the country. Given how strong Russian censorship is, where you cannot call the war a war and all that, social media is the only means to get access to this information.

In the past, yes, it was a tool to mobilize people to go to the streets. But, right now, maybe it’s not the right moment for that, because Russian restrictions on public gatherings are so horribly strict. You can face prison time for putting a Ukrainian flag up in your window. But it’s still relevant. Social-media access is still of the utmost importance for Russians.

Q: Do you have any sense of what public opinion is about the conflict within Russia?

A: The big propaganda win for Putin is that he and his media are still capable of convincing people that the fighting takes place only in Lugansk and Donetsk. So they think nothing is going on in Kharkiv or Kyiv, and it’s a big, big win for Putin. Lots of ordinary Russians actually believe that the Russian army is there only to defend these two popular republics, and that’s all.

I have lots of friends and relatives in Moscow, and I’ve been asking them constantly about this. And it looks like ordinary Russians still believe this picture. They also think that all the civilian casualties are caused by nationalist gangs, so this propaganda line is also quite successful. So that’s how it is.

There are some cracks, but it’s not about more sympathy toward Ukrainians. It’s more killed soldiers, because it looks like the casualties are really big in the Russian military. I know from my relatives in the Volga region, quite far from Moscow, that now in small towns they have people who have had their kids killed in Ukraine. So society started talking about it because there are so many deaths. But, unfortunately, I don’t see any sympathy for Ukraine, which is a very hard thing to say.
