People paying American dollars to let other people know they didn't agree with someone's position on something is the lifeblood of these forums.
I thought the shoe enjoyers all suffered ego death after they found out jordans will just disintegrate because shoes are designed to be worn/entropy.

Look Closer
Tipping was adopted by Americans from their trips to Europe at the end of the modern era, when rich people still had to performatively supplement the service jobs that the rising middle and upper working class expected, but could not afford to actually pay. Waiting for a wealthy landowner to come and tip you for your act of menial service, you could perform the same task in a more purfunctuary manner for the less well heeled. Tipping is an act of class warfare.

In my country no patron is ever expected to tip. In fact it is discouraged, before the pandemic if you flew here, as you landed the message played in the cabin pointed out that this is not a tipping culture. I do tip in fine dining restaurants when the service is to be encouraged, maybe 5%. I also like to make a large tip to the barworkers at my favourite bar at Christmas, maybe $100-200 total but this is unusual here. You might tell a server to keep the change from a dollar or so, but I would say that the majority of my compatriots never ever tip, and when I visited the US I received both better and worse service that back home. I do not think that tipping provides better service to the end customer today.

1918 or so, when tipping was controversial and, in some parts of the US, illegal:

quote:

Leon Trotsky refused to tip, or so the story goes. In 1917, when he lived for ten weeks in the Bronx, he would lunch in Jewish émigré cafés. There, he not only declined to tip, but would also instruct the other customers to follow his example. Neither of these actions endeared him to the waiters, who would spill soup on him in revenge. Trotsky remained unmoved. Eventually, the waiters refused to serve him—which, it turns out, was Trotsky's goal. Tipping, he believed, subsidized unfair labor practices. If the waiters were being paid enough, tipping would be unnecessary. Until then, they should refuse to do their jobs.

quote:

Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky refused to tip and had soup spilled on him by vengeful waiters in the Bronx (where he lived briefly). He believed that tipping allowed capitalists, a.k.a. restaurant owners, to get off the hook. If the waiters were being paid a decent wage, he said, tipping would die on the vine.
