Yeah, to be fair, I've managed, by age 42, to save up enough money to buy a house if I want to. All it took was: - completely abandoning the career I really wanted - cold bloodedly calculating and then fully pursuing a career I don't give a poo poo about in computer touching, starting at age 27 - abandoning my entire family and friend group so I that I could move once every year or two for awhile in order to more rapidly advance my career - consciously not making long term commitments anywhere to stay mobile - despite making advanced computer-toucher money, deciding to continue to budget expenses like a starving art student - investing 50 to 70 percent of my pay, instead of spending it all on cars, furniture and uh...artisanal avocado toast? (or you know, girlfriends/wives/children and memorable vacations for them all, like all my poor foolish advanced computer-toucher coworkers) - the stock market doubling TWICE in the last 10 years (I invest exclusively in total market index funds and claim NO investment savvy for picking stocks whatsoever) - definitely never having children - not having disabilities and never getting sick - maybe try picking yourself up by your bootstraps and being born white and unambiguously male like me - try maybe choosing somewhere cheap like Oklahoma to spend your age 18-25 years figuring out that being a musician in America is a bad and irrational idea that surely no rational actor would consciously choose. and that's without even getting into other advantages like having a non-broken home life with my parents while I was getting started and my first couple of cars being bought for me. So yeah, if you can do all this stuff that is obviously perfectly normal and not-lizard-person human behavior and also absolutely all accessible to every person, then you too could have sufficient money by age 42 to buy a house in Oklahoma and not much else. But lmao at the idea of actually wanting the ridiculous anchor of owning property in this stupid and worsening world that climate change is absolutely going to turn into a human hostile hellscape in most places, and ESPECIALLY wanting to stay anchored to America. lol. lmao. That's why I'm going to make enough money to rent and live humbly off the interest, so that hopefully I can just keep moving around to whereever happens to be a reasonable place (WITH healthcare, thx) so I can just loving play video games in peace. My plan of saving money to grow old as a weird hermit living in a cheap rental in Copenhagen while the world decays and slowly explodes is very enviable and totally the best I or anyone can do for themself THANKS DEMOCRATS YOU ROCK.

i can understand disillusion for people who voted for obama the first time thinking he was genuinely progressive, before he immediately filled up his administration with all kinds of ghouls and scum, but i'm not sure what illusions there would be to shatter for anyone who's voted democrat since then. was someone really, truly taken aback when joe and the dems went "sorry can't do any of that stuff"?

Look you're right but you have to remember that all the places where it's still possible (and it's actually possible in a LOT of places) are the same places that the democrats have long written off. The dems believe that America is the east coast and a few urban centers and that's it. All of those people buying homes in places that aren't these locations have an actual stake in the system and how it's run and have only political party to look toward. This is exactly the reason the democrats are dying and it's not a difficult problem to see for anyone who leaves the city. The suburbs and the hinterlands are reactionary because they have no choice but to be if they're to participate in politics at all. The democrats are nothing but a brand for those they appeal to in the cities because they solely represent the wealthy elite of those cities. The republicans however actually are a political party in the definitional sense in that they have a project and incorporate and motivate actual constituents to build and participate in that project. The people they enlist are those very people have a stake in the system (and it's hard to argue that owning a house is not having a stake) and allowing them entry to the political sphere at least by virtue of being in that class. So what you're observing is not only anecdotally correct but actually an observation on how only appealing to urbanist progressives as an aesthetic shunts more people away from the dems in a search for a viable political outlet to protect what they see as an investment into their future stability.

If you grow up with Republican parents, you hear all about how the Democrats want to do all these things that will destroy traditional America (but actually sound good to you). If you grow up with Democratic parents, you hear that the Democrats would be fixing all the problems if Republicans weren't sabotaging them every step of the way. Those can be pretty strong illusions before you're grown up enough to look at it on your own and realize, the Dems don't actually want to do anything.

We bought a nice house in a mid-sized town close to family in Georgia (not near Atlanta, natch). Wife invested in the right company at the right time and we were able to afford a down payment pretty easily after selling high. I take a look at Zillow prices at *literally* anywhere west of the Rockies when I want a good laugh. loving tiny-rear end houses in Idaho Falls and exurban Phoenix are now north of 350k? No wonder people are so blackpilled. I can’t even tell people to get off their coastie high horses and come on down to Dixie with me because it started getting stupid in the last year here, too.

Am I missing something or would it not be more effective to simply subsidize the cost of gasoline directly? Granted I wouldn't say that's a good idea, but if you specifically wanted to reduce the final cost of fuel why not just force retail outlets to price the good at x and then pay the difference they're losing buying wholesale? Obviously I understand that the reason is SOCIALISM but if you're going to do it there are easier ways. Any functional government would've set up such a system years ago simply to curb financial shocks from fuel price volatility and insulate politicians from such but then ExxonMobil wouldn't be the third most valuable company on the planet and we can't have that.
