Another day, another new place microplastics are found, even if it was an easy extrapolation to make since they're in our tissues
https://twitter.com/guardianeco/status/1506958184086446091

quote:

Huge amounts of plastic waste are dumped in the environment and microplastics now contaminate the entire planet, from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. People were already known to consume the tiny particles via food and water as well as breathing them in, and they have been found in the faeces of babies and adults.

The scientists analysed blood samples from 22 anonymous donors, all healthy adults and found plastic particles in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made.

Put on some clothes, made of plastic fibers.

The water (filled with microplastics at the source) in my tap travels through kilometers of plastic piping and tubing. I brush my teeth with plastic fibers on a plastic handle.

Make some coffee / tea in a plastic kettle, mix in some honey from a plastic container.

Pour my breakfast oats out of a plastic bag.

Throw my lunch in a plastic container, into my backpack made of plastic, head out the door. Keycard is plastic, I've lost a couple.

Hop into my truck, cab decked out in plastic, turn on the cabin heater full blast.

Head off to work.

Grind a few dozen lbs of short-chain polymer resin into the air and watch it blow away on the breeze, smiling at a job well done.

Get "home", cook some dinner out of plastic packaging.

Chill out on my couch made of plastic.

Repeat the first few steps in reverse, settling down into my semi-plastic bed for a peaceful 8 hours of slumber.

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! Another beautiful day on this glorious planet we call home, I'm sure. Glad I focus on living a clean healthy life!

i scraped a jam jar lid's worth of sediment from a dried-up pond. just that tiny amount of mud (the eggs therein) has filled my tub with copepods and ostracods :unsmith: i'm illegally planting trees up the hill trying to de-turbidify another pond (spring-fed) that's currently so opaque nothing can live in it, if i ever get it survivable in my lifetime i can rebuild its ecosystem from azolla and microcrustaceans up

Cool. I didn't know there were any copepods that went after mosquito larvae. I'm going to have to start paying more attention to the local freshwater systems. Copepods are some of the trippiest things to look at under a microscope if you get the lighting (and your dose of edibles) right.

Which reminds me, I need to get a microscope. Should have stolen one from my last job.

Copepods are vital for euphausids (krill), and euphasids are vital for everything else in the polar oceans. This being the bad news thread I have some bad news about krill production... Hopefully my addiction to kimchi (salted Korean shrimp = krill) isn't contributing to the problem. ( Everything I do contributes to the problem.)

Sometimes, time beats you.
In todays Climate Catastrophy news,

The Heatwaves for the last 5 years have caused Wheat crops to be seriously depleated, this last year it effected china for the first time.

Now our heroic people in charge are saying its Russias fault for our crop failures, we must understand, the wheat shortages and food shortages are the wars fault, not globo-warming.
https://twitter.com/ABCPolitics/status/1507052235192254472?s=20&t=HXF9A00p9VXlsOVeZoP06A

Also General Mills mysteriously cant mill wheat anymore, must not be related to the wheat shortages.

https://komonews.com/news/nation-wo...ly-issues-costs

quote:

According to Reuters, the popular food company has already warned supply issues for its refrigerated products like Totino's Pizza Rolls and Pillsbury dough would mean consumers could possibly see empty shelves.

Anyone who has a memory better than a fish remembers our resident goon who works at the wheat-pinchers association whos coworker blamed the shortage on LAZY WORKERS AFRAID OF COVID instead of crop failures.
