Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

Actually I think the most effective anti-union strategies at my site are:

1) It's in loving Texas.

2) We're somehow the Twilight Zone of Amazon FCs so our site isn't a complete clown show. Just an intermittent one.

Of course as soon as some unionization campaign does start at my place I'm absolutely in. I've yet to see even a manager come up with a good response to "If corporate doesn't want me to have a union, then I double want one because gently caress corporate"

You're right though the "Make my day, peasant" attitude is perhaps one of the most powerful ways to discourage it...right up until it's not.

Fallout from that news story is starting already:

https://twitter.com/VzwUnion/status/1504839987971338240

Appreciate the offers for help, but at the present time money isn’t what we need. What we need is help reaching out to more Verizon retail workers, and anyone unemployed should be applying to the MANY open positions at retail stores (the pay is actually not bad already, highly recommend getting that $$)

And the Lord said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.

DAD LOST MY IPOD posted:

I think at Amazon and other places it’s largely the latter. you can draw a pretty direct line between “woke corporate” union busting at REI and elsewhere, and the old racial wedge used to union-bust in the early 20th century—the more you raise the salience of race in your employees’ minds, the harder solidarity becomes. the background racism of American culture does a lot of the work for you (which is, indeed, why it exists, and why it was cultivated). these days you can’t nakedly race bait your white employees the way you could in 1922, but you can do a lot to make white and POC employees distrust each other.

still, though, the most effective union busting tactic is and always will be naked threats to destroy people’s livelihood if they organize. Amazon can be subtle when they want to be but that’s still the main thrust of their tactics. arguing “but you don’t need a union because we’re ~so progressive~” may have an effect on the margins, but it’s definitely a second best tactic compared to “try it and get fired, pleb”

My workplace is around 40% South Vietnamese, and when my union was starting the union busters explicitly tried to link it to Communism. It was hilariously bad, especially since all of them are second or third generation, educated in America, and perfectly capable of seeing the difference between American leftists and the government of Ho Chi Minh.

All for unionizing and stuff, hate to say it though but if you're working a mcjob/fastfood/service industry you should be more focused on trying to figure out how to improve your life for the better and what choices brought you here not "how can i exploit this situation to my advantage"
like, I completely understand that you dont wanna be there and that youre getting taken advantage of by a corporation but unionizing mcdonalds cooks and Starbucks barristas isn't a big win for socialism if anything it's the opposite because youre agreeing that this embarrassing line of work is something you take pride in

anyway trade union representation is not a privilege, it's not something you earn by getting into "good" work and it is most urgently needed for workers most exploited. someone will be flipping burgers so long as there are burgers. the relentless focus on self improvement and redefining low wage work as lesser is a painfully transparent trick to make sure the most talented and ambitious people irrationally hate their peers for keeping them down and on themselves for taking low status work to survive, and cripples solidarity.

i support anyone's right to form a union, but if someone put a gun to my head and made me choose i'd pick making everyone making minimum wage or less to be unionized over any other group of people. there's more of them and they need it more and they actually make society run rather than running society.

what’s funny to me is that my manager tells me how she totally understand how STARBUCKS workers could benefit from a union, but OUR job doesn’t need one

then when people organize those bad jobs it’s “well it makes sense for [higher paid skilled jobs]”

all workers! all!

CoolCab

"why does the NHS get a union, why should we allow our medical staff to strike?" and also "unions make sense at factories but we're all here to help people!" were two i heard from the same person on different occasions.

i really like the "I completely support unions but just not here" tactic bc it usually just winds up pissing off fencesitters in the workplace to get more pro-union

it’s ok if people have genuine questions about unions/why they’re good but saying a union of all McDonald’s workers wouldn’t be a win for socialism is a huge lmao

theflyingexecutive

I'm gonna go back in and say that entry level jobs like mcdonalds and starbucks used to be good for staying afloat while looking for other options because you could go in on day one and say something like "I can only work Monday through Thursday evenings because I have classes during the day" and have that be respected. now that they're all on just in time scheduling, anything other than "I am available to work 24/7" gets your application canned immediately. even if you managed to carve out an agreement like that, they have all the power in the world to renege on it and soft fire you by reducing your shifts to nothing. good luck paying tuition at that point.

you used to be able to work a food service job and eat enough for the day in addition to taking home leftovers. now everything is micromanaged so much, you can only eat a small meal off the approved employee meal list and anything else is theft that will get you fired instantly, even if the food is otherwise destined for the dumpster

you used to be able to work 40 (or more) hours a week at a low wage job and have more control over your schedule and commute, but now weekly hours have been reduced to 19 or 29 to circumvent ACA and state laws about benefits, leaving the horrors of app work as the only way to fill the gaps.

you used to be able to split a pile of cash at the end of the night as a server, giving you the ability to hide some of your income from taxes. now that tipping is almost entirely card-based, it's all on your paycheck and that's if your employer isn't straight up stealing it (as 84% of restauranteurs are engaging in wage theft)

a huge amount of poo poo has changed in the poverty wage game since even older millennials were working their first jobs and it's heinously underreported how dire the situation is in these regards. a national McDonald's union that would get rid of even just in time scheduling and unjustified shift reductions would provide an immense improvement in thousands of workers' lives and class mobility
