I'm a kindergarten teacher and I teach kids (among other things) about sexuality. We got a book that explicitly shows how to make a baby that's really popular with kids for example. Another part of it is "ask before you hug or kiss someone" and "if you don't want to others to look at you while your diapers are changed or you are on the toilet that's okay".

I would find it really hard to read calling some one "talented, gifted, brilliant, masterly and great", but not the greatest ever, as being critical of someone's accomplishment. Or at least that's how I react when people around me call me that. Maybe it's a cultural difference - do you value people for being good vs. the best? If someone places second on a marathon, are they losers because they placed just after the winner, or should we consider that they still beat the hundreds of other runners behind them? Or the one who finishes the race last, are they a loser or did they just finish a marathon instead of staying at home eating cheetos while posting on forums? (It's a trick question: obviously the answer is that the cheeto-eating goon is the real winner.)

So wait, the pattern of attack here implies that "woman" is to "biologist" as all these other things are to their respective answer - that is, totally unrelated. The smear is implicitly that she picked the wrong related expert. E.g. racketeering has nothing to do with playing tennis, so it's foolish to bring up.
Lester is then openly saying that defining a woman has nothing to do with biology. Literally, that what makes someone a woman is not biological.

I wonder what sort of answer the conservative commentators would have given. Like, clearly, their stated objection is that they think she didn't answer the question, and not that she wasn't sufficiently transphobic.

Like, I'm sure what's going on in their head is "everyone knows what a woman is, it's obvious." but then I don't think they themselves could answer the question. Because their internal definition of woman is probably something like "when I look at someone and my brain automatically classifies them as a woman, unless I later learn that she is trans."

And, as you point out, Lester is dismissing "woman is when vagina" because that's a biological rather than sociological definition. So, clearly he would be fine with what is left, which is either "i am not a sociologist" or "a woman is anyone who earnestly identifies as such."

what keeps happening to my clothes
By political cartoon standards, references to things happening after 2000 are groundbreakingly current

100YrsofAttitude
Apr 29, 2013

I know that the idea is "Just Post", but I do want to do this with a bit of contextualization.

Those of you who do post political cartoons, where exactly are you getting them? I'm looking for French ones, and I'm finding things all right but they seem to be void of any rhyme or reason. I do not know if there's a national syndicate with an archive, or if I'm supposed to look at a specific series of papers like people do for the Australian and Brittoons.

If so, I think I can at least grab things from Le Monde and from Charlie Hebdo. The organization of either site isn't all that clear, and I'm not sure as of yet just how punctually they update but I'll figure it out as I go along, with ideally an update for Le Monde every couple of days if not weekly, and a weekly Charlie Hebdo one.

Again, I am very much an amateur and very poorly informed of general French political culture, not being a native from here, and while I am generally aware of what's going around in the world, I am not great on regional nuances so apologies if I get things wrong. I'll do what I can to translate the French, but it's possible I'll miss some nuances or not understand the context as well as I can. But hey! It's something right?

Some background:

Le Monde- Founded in 1944 at the behest of Charles De Gaulle, Le Monde is arguably France's most trusted newspaper that tends to lean centre-left, though they claim to be neutral. From what I can tell, papers in France are otherwise openly partisan, in that, their editorial views are rather well known and the paper's are open about it. Take in comparison Le Figaro, which is right-wing or the Libération, which is left-wing. Le Monde is also the most accessible French paper internationally, often times being the only one you can find abroad, depending where you are. Their long time cartoonist was Plantu or Jean Plantureux, who retired at 70 a year ago. He helped create the collective called, Cartoonists for Peace, and from what I can tell its them who've taken over drawing for the paper.

A quick sampler from last week to have a look at what to expect (dating will be the French style ie Day/Month):

21/3

by Swiss cartoonist Herrmann: "And become a neutral chicken coop?"

22/3

Urbs, a French cartoonist, comments on a plane crash in China. It reads: "China Eastern Airlines Crash", the man is saying, "This pilot sure is strange, huh?"

22/3

by the Algerian Dilem: 'War in Ukraine: Sanctioned Russian Oligarchs "I should've bought a submarine!"'

23/3

by the Dutch Tjeerd Royaards

23/3

Urbs again.
'The Taliban opened schools for girls, then closed them'
"There you go! Besides, you don't have any sense of humor!"

Charlie Hebdo You may have heard of this one due to the terrorist attack their editorial board suffered in 2015. This paper is pretty much constantly printing political cartoons and are wholly non-conformist, contrarian, and explicitly offensive. Those will all be timg by principle since they can often by NSFW as we'll see. It's hard to get a handle on what's current or not, so I'll just post what I can make heads or tails of. As of now they have a series on the presidential campaign which I'll try to get through slowly but surely, a couple of other things on Ukraine, and what seems to be a weekly report of events by juin. That's what I'll try to post weekly at least. The comics are often wordy though so we'll see.

juin's week 21-27 of March

Media and Press week at school

UN: First meeting at Vienna (Austria) of participating states for nuclear non-proliferation treaty

International Meteorology Day

Macron at the European Council in Brussels

Amazon: Employees vote for a union in a warehouse in NYC

EDF (French Electric Co): Cattentom 3 nuclear reactor turned off to verify evidence of corrosion

Garnier Palace: Concert for Peace in support of Ukraine

100YrsofAttitude

This is from the 23rd of March in Le Monde but it's not really a political cartoon, as it's labeled a tract or flier, but it's of personal interest to me.

I'm a teacher over here, and Macron is proposing a new deal with teachers that'll benefit so-called "Good" teachers versus so-called "Bad" teachers. Good teachers are those that are constantly available, always helping students, always dynamic etc. I have (very few) colleagues that do gently caress-all, which is annoying, but I have no desire that I get paid more or they less. It's a bull-poo poo tactic. Worse, he wants parents to help in judging these categories, which I fear opens the door to nightmares like what's happened in Florida. It's an Americanization of education and that's not good. Teacher's aren't paid well here, but we have our benefits, and we hope pay will go up (HA!) but if it does it should be for everyone, not a privileged few.

Start with a cartoon that interests you, reverse GIS. Should lead you to publications, archives, blogs. These should contain further pertinent cartoons, which you can google search in turn, ad infinitum \ until you've exhausted ever source \ until you feel like you have enough for your purposes.

As you've figured out I get mine direct from the Australian papers and force myself to at least glance at the headlines each one is pushing. Although David Rowe and Christopher Downes are nice enough to post theirs to their twitter which makes it easy. And the state based News Corp papers tend to crop their cartoons to all hell so I have to Google image search for complete ones (which works for Mark Knight and Brett Lethbridge but not Warren Brown).

Remember that this isn't actually about sex ed. It's about telling kids that gay and trans people exist. And, they need to invent facts to support their "gays are pedophiles who are grooming your kids" position. So, they look at education about reproduction and revive the moral panic about that in service of fueling the new moral panic. They just want to say "they're showing kids pornography in kindergarten!" so that people will support their new law banning trans kids from public school or whatever.
