Elektronauts is pretty good in addition to what's been mentioned above. There is understandably a focus on Elektron gear, but I find folks there are often talking about other hardware and software as well.

10 years old but given the reuptake in late 90s/early 2000s style FPSs this feels pretty relevant.

Yep, beat it last night. I’m running through these games with a friend who happens to be deep into FM and a Digitakt so we just go “Oooh!” a lot when we stumble into good tracks.

This is what we played previously on a whim and it blew us away, both in co-op gameplay and music:

My friend even has the MegaFM, which somehow has two YM2612 chips, the same ones used in the Genesis/Megadrive. It sounds… good.

VCV 1 had modules for all the classic sound chips.. NES, gameboy, YM2612. Unfortunately almost all of them got memory holed with the switch to 2.0 because people never updated them.

But it was as fun as one might imagine, having CV for all those old chips.

Would you recommend VCV 2 for someone who wants to play with rack stuff for the first time without spending thousands to decide if they like it that much yet?

Are there decent tutorials?

Not official tutorials, but youtubers have filled the gap. Jeremy Blake did the best tutorial series' I've seen about a month ago:

And yes, if you are aware of the risk that it will give you serious GAS for real eurorack, it's an excellent way to try it out. If you want to go down that road my only advice is to not install a million modules at once, learning a dozen modules really well is way more fruitful than using 100 of them for a couple minutes.

Midi controllers are very helpful. I use a nanokontrol2 with vcv. Anything with knobs and / or faders will open up manual control of more than one parameter at a time (a big drawback of the mouse interface.)

Rolo

Hmm, what have we here?
It’s not the most efficient setup but I already own the stuff involved so this is what’s currently working:

Monologue for Midi control, MacBook for the program and in case I so choose, OP-1 for sampling and tape recording:

Midi out from the OP-1 also works well but that limits my ability to sample and record until I get some kind of DAW plugin on the Mac working.

It’s a start to at least see if I’m interested in learning more rack stuff. So far I’ve made some beeps by throwing stuff at the wall but it’s time to dig into YouTube to learn how the basic modules actually work.

Hypothetical, but now that I have a proper MacBook and Koala on an iPad, the OP-1 may become something else in the next year, who knows.

They have a podcast that I actually love, but simply don't have enough podcast listening time for these days now that I'm no longer commuting to work or walking 10 minutes to the nearest bathroom or cafeteria: https://sonicstate.com/sonictalk

It’s just a digital 4 track tiny DAW with a convenient tape-like interface. I wouldn’t use it on my desktop but for a portable all-in-one it makes for a neat workflow.

Ok consider me curious level 2 about rack stuff. VCV is a ton of fun and I'm finding myself a little more outside my own box every few minutes. Lots of "oh dude I can use this to control this wow" moments followed usually by "that sounds bad" but I'm loving the exploration. Every time I clear the board I branch out a little differently each time. At this point I just want a bank of MIDI knobs for VCA's so I can throw a whole row in and branch them all to different modules and chains of modules.

I'm going to be doing this all day, coolest thing is I'm getting to a point where I can answer some of my own questions by throwing it on there and seeing how it reacts.

So like, ugh. Let's say I definitely don't want to purchase anything right now because it's been literally one day since I started playing with fake modules but I want to start learning about real life hardware, where people talk about them, where they sell them and where to look/listen to people's racks. Where do I start? Is there a general cool place to window shop modules and custom racks?

Depending on your city there might be modular meetup groups or other synth nerds that get together.

E: you could also browse modulargrid.net and see what cases people are designing and making for themselves. Also YouTube for sure.

Everyone loves Arturia, can't really go wrong. I can't remember which ones have CV outs, but you should probably go for one that does so you don't have to get a midi to CV module out of the gate.

If you're smart about what you buy, you'll always make back 80% of what you shelled out.

There are a small handful of manufacturers with bad names and poo poo that is known to have terrible build quality.

I think the key thing is probably just reading the manual and doing a bit if research before you buy something and having a somewhat clear idea of what you'd hope to use it for.

It's not too different from having a guitar pedal collection.

When you buy a case, buy something a little larger than what you feel you need if you can afford it - but not WAY larger.

I love Omri's channel, he's so low key enthused about it all and explains stuff in a really clear, methodical way without being dry.

I especially like some of his "pre built" challengey things, where he'll put together a bunch of, say, Befaco and Insruo modules and encourage people to see whay they can do within those parameters

The only thing that bugs me about Omri is his module demonstrations, his demos are usually monster patches with 20 other modules so the one thing he's trying to focus on gets lost in the mix.

Does anyone have a Roland TB-3 that can compare it to a Behringer TD-3? I picked up the behringer a while ago, but.. man... I'm just not meshing with the workflow at all. Is the Roland any easier to program and jam on? I know that's a SUPER subjective question.

I guess I could answer my own question by just watching some TB-3 tutorials on youtube. I'm not sure how much I want to "jam" on one anyway, but even programming simple patterns on this thing kind of sucks. I can hook it up to the computer and use Behringer's sequencer software but.. like at that point why don't I just get a TB clone VST. I typically hate touchscreens but I think the Roland TB-3 might actually have a good fit for entering slides and things with your finger.

I'm genuinely curious about the roland, like the IDEA of a TB clone, and I'm not attached to the behringer at ALL at this point. I'm probably going to throw it up on reverb or sa-mart and take the L. If I've learned anything, it's that if I don't like a piece of gear I'm just flat out not going to use it, so no sense in trying to convert myself. I have a lot of other gear to put my time into.
